John Gibson earns ANOTHER shutout, as Detroit beats Chicago | Quinn Hughes traded to Wild

Today on Locked on Red Wings, another John Gibson shutout as Detroit finishes the road trip for one and one. You’re Locked on Red Wings, your daily podcast on the Detroit Red Wings, part of the Locked On Network, your team every day. Welcome back to the Locked On Red Wings podcast. We are your hosts, Brian Fischer and Scotty Bentley, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. And Scotty, the Red Wings finished off the sixgame road swing with a four to nothing victory in Chicago. Another John Gibson shutout. And we will talk about that game as well as a little bit about the road trip as a whole as they finish the trip 4-1 and one. an incredibly successful road trip to keep them at top the Atlantic Division or at least tied in points at top the Atlantic Division as the Lightning have the tiebreakers. Great road trip. So, we’re going to discuss that whole thing as well as probably some of the Quinton Hughes stuff in segment three as he goes to Minnesota in a mega deal. Uh, but before we can get to any of that, I do got to let the people know today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. If you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit FanDuel.com and place your NFL live bets live bets all season long. Your live bits, Scotty, I feel as if with this Detroit Red Wings game again, four nothing victory over the Chicago Blackhawks, a Conor Bedardless Chicago Blackhawks, but nonetheless a young, fun, fast Chicago Blackhawks team. I know it’s all about Conor Bard, but they got other players on that team that are a lot of fun to watch. They got a lot of youth. Uh the Red Wings could have easily gone out there, laid an egg. It was the final day of the road trip. You’re coming back across two different time zones, back to Central time before coming home to Eastern time. You spent a long time away. I thought felt it was a very it could have been a trap game in that like they’re just tired. And I know Chicago was also coming off of the second half of a backtoback, but it’s the NHL and there’s no such thing as an easy win in the NHL. But they came out and they played a pretty good hockey game against the Chicago Blackhawks getting the victory. And I feel like there’s two dueling storylines in this hockey game if you’re a Red Wings fan. And I think it is the return to Chicago again for Dbrinka and Kane and then of course John Gibson getting his second shut out in the last three starts and winning five all five of his last five starts. So which of the two do you want to start with really? Uh we can start with Gibson. I I completely agree with you for starters that the two biggest storylines are the Kane and and Cat success and then obviously goalending. Um I mean obviously he was great. This is what his second shut out in three games. Um it is imperative that he does better than he did the first month of the season. and he has been so much better as of his last whatever you pointed out there four or five outings at a at a minimum. Um, this was a, again, I mean, you know, no Bard certainly matters and certainly is a factor, but this is still a Chicago team that is, you know, has fast young legs and and can get down the ice really quickly. And he had a couple of really big saves on some uh some breakaways and some rushes for Chicago. I do want to give credit to the Wings defense, which I thought uh didn’t allow Chicago for most of the game. I guess there’s a couple exceptions, but didn’t allow Chicago to, you know, like set up shop and cycle for long periods of time. Um, and were at least able to to push opportunities to the outside when they weren’t rushes and breaks and whatnot. But I I think that Gibson was great in this game. And yeah, I mean, if you go if you go by period instead of by game, he’s what, eight shutout periods of his last nine. It’s just that one was, you know, four. He gave up four in one period. Three. Yeah. Empty netter. Yeah. Um, gave up three goals in a period in that game. So, uh, I think you’re gave up three against Calgary. You’re confusing Cam Talbot. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Talbot had the empty net. You’re right. Um, but yeah, I mean, eight eight of your last nine periods being shut out is is pretty darn good. We will gladly take that. So, hopefully it’s a sign of, you know, continued improvement. Yeah. And I think you bring up a good point too where the Red Wings defense really stepped up in this game too because I I think that Chicago and the numbers back it up had the puck more in this hockey game than Detroit did using it was basically stretches for both teams on who had the puck in the offensive zone. The Red Wings a lot of rushes. It was the the track meet, you know, at times that we’ve become accustomed to. Chicago’s got a lot of speed and at times it was difficult for Detroit to keep up. There was a lot of cycling by Chicago in the offensive zone, constantly getting hemmed in and getting stuck. The Red Wings defenders did a good job of keeping the those opportunities that, as you just noted, to the outside. They also blocked a ton of shots in this hockey game. The Red Wings out blocked Chicago 21 to7, which one is a great thing that that they’re playing defense in a way that they’re not afraid to put their body on the line to block those shots. But again, we always talk about like if you’re blocking a lot of shots, it also means you don’t have to puck a ton. And Chicago was purely like volume shooting. You look at the the cory, the shot attempts in this hockey game. At five on five, the Blackhawks had 53 shot attempts to the Detroit Red Wings 35. So that’s a 60% share across the game for the Blackhawks. But the Red Wings had 56% of the high danger chances. So, the Red Wings did a really good job of keeping many most of the opportunities to outside high danger areas and they were just purely volume shooting. They cycled the puck a lot. Don’t get me wrong, like that’s a dangerous Blackhawks team, but more often than not, the shot the shots that Gibson had to save weren’t like super dangerous saves, but he did make a fair share of dangerous saves as well. Gibson played really well. Again, his goal saved above expected, I think, in this game was 2.24, something in that wheelhouse. I it was on a social graphic that I put out the night of the game. He’s playing great again and we talked about it what last week that if the Red Wings every time the Red Wings solve a problem a new hole in the pipe bursts and it’s usually they solve the depth scoring but then defensive lapses and goending was a problem. It seems like they’re finally figuring out how to plug all three, at least in this stretch of hockey, cuz the Red Wings, if they want to be serious about making the playoffs, they have to have decent goalending, especially when you look at the contemporaries in the Atlantic division. Montreal’s goalending has been terrible this year. Ottawa’s goalending has been terrible this year. So, if you can have better goalending than those two teams, you’ll have a good shot. Like, that’s going to make or break their season because I think they have enough scoring. your top two pairs at least you’re not you have one of the best pairs in the league in Edmonson Cider your second pair is serviceable and ASP is steadily improving as the season goes on your third pair is virtually unplayable but thankfully they don’t play nearly as many minutes as the top two they’re they are getting there and so if this what we’re seeing in Gibson in December is closer to reality than what we saw in October and November the Red Wings will be okay and I think they’ll have a very good shot at making the playoffs barring a massive collapse. But this Eastern Conference just will not give up. I mean, they’re two points from being out of the div top from the division and out of a wild card spot altogether because the wild card is 37 points and the Wings have 39. I think it’s the thing is it’s it’s almost like not even worth standing watching because it’s like it’s just it’s always going to be that. I mean, it’s and it’s fun to say like, oh, the Red Wings are, you know, tied for top in the division. Like it’s fun to say that, especially as late as December, but wild card two right now is 37 points. Detroit’s in first in the Atlantic with 39, right? Like a two-point swing, they’re out of the playoffs in December, right? I hate this. I hate this conference. Yeah, it’s absurd. And like I said, I mean, it’s not going anywhere. So, I know Mlen says it all the time, but like you you just got to focus on on, you know, your own games. Like there’s there it’s very cliche but it’s it’s could not be more true in a situation like this where it’s just like you know every loss means a lot and every win means a lot. Like that’s just the the you know price I I guess that is paid for playing in this not only conference but division as well. Yeah. But John Gibson just round of applause for him. Virtual round of applause. I’m actually going to clap here but in 94 save percentage in his last five starts. It’s been great to see him turn it around. Hopefully that continues because the Red Wings desperately need him. Scotty, let’s head to a quick break and when we return, we’ll talk about Alex Debrink and Patrick Kane as they both have multi-point nights in their at least for Kane, it’s what his third return to Chicago. Segment two lockdown Red Wings podcast. All right, Scotty. We said there were two dueling storylines in this hockey game. The first one being John Gibson with a second shut out in the last three. you you pointed out that that’s eight of the last nine periods were shut out periods for him outside of the three goals he allowed against the Flames and um the other one was the fact that the Brinket and Kane were returning to Chicago again, the city where their careers took off. Kane came in at 497 in his career goals as he approaches 500. And they both just had and the second line’s been rolling as a whole these last on the entire road trip honestly. And it did not stop in this one as they dominated play. That second line was very good again. Alex Debrink three points, two goals, one assist. Patrick Kane a goal and assist too. And let’s throw Andrew Cop in there. He got an assist too. So, second line, those those three, man, they’ve just been so good. Yeah, Cat I I mean, I don’t even really know what else there is to say about Debrink at this point. Like, he I I mean, just has so consistently been this team’s best goal scorer for I I mean, over a calendar year, uh, at this point, you know, going on a a season and a half. Um, it is very cool to have Kane on this hockey team for moments like that, you know, like that. That’s one of those things where it it um the whole hockey world is watching and and people that grew up watching Patrick Kane and have seen his whole career play out. you know, obviously hockey fans just in general are going to watch that and and feel a type of way, but it’s um there’s something added to it when he’s, you know, playing for your own team. And the return to Chicago and uh he had that, you know, him and Debrink had the interview a few weeks ago where they were like, “What’s a better city, Chicago or Detroit?” And they both were like, “Detroit, we’re done with Chicago.” Like, I don’t know. Huge problem if they said Chicago, though. Right. Right. So, it’s just it’s one of those things where um you know, I’m I’m sure once like Kane is out of the league and the dust settles, you know, on his career that he will acknowledge and you know, appreciate the uh Chicago fan base a little bit more. But like for the time being, he’s a wing and it’s just cool to see him, you know, reach milestones and and have moments like that while he’s in a wing wheel. I mean, he clearly still loves the city because one, he said in a recent interview that he lives there in the summer. Uh, every time he plays in Chicago, if he scores, the entire crowd cheers for him scoring against their team as he celebrates like with the fans about it. Fun fact, it was Chris Chelios bobblehead night, by the way. Uh, because of course it was. Of course, they do it on purpose. I mean, he they got to the way he spoils the Chris Chelios nights is so funny. Another guy who played for both the Wings and the Right. Well, that’s one of my point that that has to be on purpose. Yeah, he uh he’s also really gotten hot lately. Like even when he wasn’t scoring, he was still using his offensive IQ. He was generating a lot of assists, but he’s his scoring rate has certainly picked up the last few games as well. Uh he is now 23 points in 24 games, just slightly below a point per game. He’s so he’s pay playing I know he won’t play all 82 cuz he missed a little bit of time but he’s playing at a 81 82 point pace which is better than he was last season. So like last year remember he was going through a scoring slump and he just honestly didn’t and he had similar slump this year but the difference between his slump last year and his slump this this season was that while he wasn’t scoring he was still accumulating assists. a lot of them power play assists, but like I’m one of those people it’s like I don’t care where your production comes from. If your job on the team is to produce, produce. And he has been. So now that he’s broken out of the scoring slump, like he scored what, three goals on that road trip. He’s close to breaking 500. He’s looking a lot better with Andrew Cop as their center because Andrew Cop is a pretty he’s a very cerebral cerebral player like Kane. Not to that level, but he’s a smart player, too. He plays a heavy game. He’s winning those puck battles, getting Cat and Kane the puck. Uh Kane obviously fed de Brinket a actually was cop who fed de Brinket that kind of shot pass that got past pass Arford Soderblum but yeah it was great for both those guys and I agree with the brinket like what else can you say besides the fact that he’s having the best season of his career I think right now he leads the Red Wings in points he’s got 37 points in 33 games played he passed Larkin for goals yesterday as goals leader with the empty nutter I I don’t know what else you can say about him he’s got nine points and he had nine points on that six game road swing. I mean, yeah, Alex Debrink is playing the most consistent hockey and the best hockey of his career right now. At least in the three years I’ve seen. Yeah, I I I don’t think that that’s a a hot take really either. I I mean, certainly the best all-around, you know, player that he’s been in his entire NHL career. I I um like I started the the segment with. I mean, I don’t even know how much more there is to really say about him. I mean, he he has truly emerged as uh not only one of the best players on this team, but um one of the the better, you know, producers in uh in the division at this point. And that’s awesome to have obviously in uh in the top six and getting as many minutes as he has been. I mean, there’s just been a lot of, you know, es and flows, especially in the first like season of his Redwing tenure. And uh now he’s Yeah, he he’s been what we wanted him to be. And I and I would argue more and while he like while we’re talking about them as a line like it is important to note that obviously they as a line do get at five on five more favorable deployments offensive zone deployments but even with that in mind they had an 87% of the expected goals on the ice. They were had an expected goals four of point44 and an expected goals against of 06. So obviously there’s a lot of getting on the ice when the team’s up going up the ice and getting off, you know, in the offensive zone or between whistles, not taking defensive zone face off. So that’s all you got to take that into account. But they still only face at five on five three shots against the entire game. Three total shots against because and that’s happens when you possess the puck and that team that line’s been really good at getting the puck, getting the zone, and cycling. How many on this road trip in games in which they’ve been outplayed have they had like long shifts where they just carry the play in the offensive zone? And I want to give a ton of credit to ASP for that as well. I mean, when when they have that line out there along with pair number two, I I mean, it it that is what it looks like. and and part of that is ASP’s uh I guess I’ll use the word aggressiveness or willingness to, you know, crash a little bit and come off the blue line and and he’s an offensive defenseman and we see that a lot obviously with guys that have that style of play, but I think he’s getting more and more comfortable on NHL ice and within his role and understanding kind of what he needs to do. I mean, how many times just in the last two weeks have we seen, you know, Kane and ASP or to Brink in ASP uh either goals or goalc scoring opportunities uh going both ways? I mean, Kane had the, you know, the pass out to ASP a few games ago for a goal. So, I I think that he is, you know, not a forward obviously, but I I I think that he’s a part of that as well. Yeah. And speaking of ASP, you know, he had a beautiful assist in this hockey game against the Blackhawks, too. And while I think they’re probably taking away some of his really really difficult deployments cuz they they were asking a lot out of him to start the season. Like they had him playing top four minutes. With Edmonson, you kind of have to, right? Like you need Edmonson out on the ice. So there he was playing PK and I I was at first I was like, “Wow, they must really think he’s like something.” and then he struggled and I feel like lately they’ve been catering his deployments a little bit more to his skill set which is smart especially with a rookie who isn’t completely filled out yet and it’s really starting to benefit him and you can see him easing relaxing a little bit he’s getting a lot of confidence and you look at that play in the what second third period of the game against the Blackhawks where he walked the line back and forth under with pressure on him he skated he skated he turned he skated he skated he turned he skated he skated he shot the puck Lucas Raymond got the the tip and and then EMTT Finny for the rebound. Like that goal doesn’t happen without Axel Sandine Pelico showing off his confidence and walking that line and things like that are going to help further build his confidence. Like we’ve talked a lot about and we mentioned it in the last game, the last recap too where previously he would every time he get the puck at the blue line, he’d kind of almost like panic fire like just shoot the puck. Like that was his mentality. Now you’re seeing him relax a little bit and show patience that not everything is immediately urgent and it’s starting to work and he still shoots the puck in the shin pads quite a bit, don’t get me wrong, but watching him relax and like you’re starting to see what people have talked about a lot more and of course I was so happy that EMTT Finny got rewarded with the goal cuz he he hustles so hard. He’s so fast. I’m I’m glad that he was the one who got to bury that rebound because he goes to the net. It’s amazing what happens when you uh when you get pucks deep, right? Get bucks deep. Uh, Scotty, do you have anything to add on this game? Uh, PK went three for three, power play went 0 for three, but right, same thing. Yeah, I mean there’s I’m trying to think. I mean, other players played well, but nothing worth really mentioning in this game. No, I mean I really those main story lines because hard to find too much to complain about with the four to nothing win. You know, it’s a it’s a good all-around game. I think the the biggest conversation is, you know, the road trip as a whole, which we have an off day tomorrow. Maybe we can kind of talk about that then. And then obviously the big news from the weekend is uh is is the Hughes trade. So, right, which we will talk about in segment three. So stay tuned to lockdown Red Wings. NFL Sundays move fast. All right, Scotty. heartbreaking moment, tragic on Friday evening as Quinn Hughes out of nowhere is traded to the Minnesota Wild. It was a massive, massive hole. It was Marco Rossy, 24 year old, someone we talked a lot about over the summer. He was disgruntled, wanted to leave Minnesota uh because he was slightly undized, but he has a pretty solid resume as an established forward at his young age already. signed a new three-year deal with Minnesota after the drama between him and the organization, basically walking him to free agency. He had 60 points last season at 23 years old. They also got highly highly highly touted defensive prospect Ze Buouham, uh 20 years old, struggling a little bit with Minnesota right now. You could add another highly in another highly like that he it was such a such a steep or deep draft year in 2024 where he fell to 12th like people were just could not believe at that position wanted him so bad man. Uh and then Liam Ogrren who is also a first round pick from the last few years but not as highly not as high of a ceiling on him I feel is the is the consensus that no one’s really hyping him up too much. And a 2026 first round pick. So essentially, they got three first round picks and a and a young player who’s very good. Like two first round prospects and a first round pick and a young player who’s already really shown off some stuff that he can do. Um God, he was a first round pick, too. So it’s three former first round picks and a first round pick and a first round pick. Yeah. No, you know. Yeah. Go ahead. It’s one of those things where when you first see the notification and you’re like, “Oh, shoot.” you know, like Hughes is going to Minnesota and there’s a ton of reports that the Red Wings were right there, right? And and were really engaged in conversations about it and um you know, we’re were one of the other, you know, two or three final teams at the table and like that part of it stings. Um in the same breath, I think you can look at that return and be like that that is that that is a lot that that is one upping that, right? That is an incredible you know, return and and total package that they are sending Vancouver’s way and and I mean to your point, you got to think not only are you matching that, you have to exceed it to an extent that is, you know, clear and obvious to pull off a trade. So, I’m not saying that that’s like, you know, we should just be happy because like the there are player there are very very seldom are are there opportunities where a player of that caliber is just available. and the Wings. One of the big criticisms of like this era of Red Wings hockey is they maybe don’t have like an overpowering like true superstar and I think that Hughes is at least close if not just solidified definitely into that conversation. So I like you know the price is the price like at some point you got to like put up or shut up and you got to pay what a player is worth. But um you know it’s it’s again it’s it’s uh it’s a fine line to walk of like okay I’m disappointed they didn’t get him. It would have been you know awesome. I feel like it’s a little bit of a I don’t know if I want to say missed opportunity, but like it’s a little bit of a of a um a situation that you don’t have to find yourself in that you could have capitalized on, but in the same breath, it it I’m not going to be mad at the Red Wings organization for not being able to, you know, eclipse that type of uh value because that is a a heck of a return Vancouver got, right? And it I echo a lot of your sentiments. I was when it happened I was so frustrated because one I was like where did Minnesota even come from because they weren’t rumored and Jim Rutherford said afterwards like they wanted to go east to respect the players wishes but Minnesota came in with a Godfather offer and apparently there were reports too that there was one player the Red Wings wouldn’t move off of and a lot of the speculation is that that that was Simon Edmonson. They were unwilling to trade Edmonson. Honestly, a lot of this comes back down to is the contract situation for Quinn Hughes. So, I I tweeted it out when it initially happened. Like, Minnesota gave up a hole. It was a lot. It was a great return. And they’re getting Quinn Hughes back. It’s not like they’re getting like it was a win-win trade in my books. Like, you’re getting Quinn Hughes back for at least a year and a half. And the reason why I think this risk is worth it for Minnesota is because of where they’re at as a team. This is a team that missed the playoffs in 2024, which is how they got Zev Buouham at 12th. Um, and I think they’ve lost in the playoffs eight straight times in the first round. This is a team that is desperately looking for a deep playoff push. So, they needed a needle mover. And so, for them sending, you don’t want to spend the time with where their team’s at right now with their playoff window open and wanting to contend for a Stanley Cup right now. you don’t necessarily want to spend the time to develop Zeb Buouyam. You already have Marco Rossi who you know is already asked at least wants to get out. Liam Ogrren doesn’t seem like he’s got a terribly high ceiling. So, it’s a win-win in that like I can get Quinn Hughes at least for a year and a half. We might win a Stanley Cup and that’ll make it all worth it. But he also might walk away. But for where we are at as an organization, it is far more worth it to take on that risk than it would for Detroit. Because if Detroit gives up, and here’s the conversation, like what’s the oneup? Marco Casper, I think, is going to be a much more well-rounded player than Marco Rossi. But I don’t think he has I don’t know if he necessarily has the production ceiling that Rossy’s already shown. It it comes down to what does Vancouver want? They wanted a center. Would they have taken Casper over Rossy if you had also offered Edmonson? Another first round pick would have been like MBN and a first. Like that’s a steep hole. if there was and I would have said yes in a heartbeat to that trade if that was possible. If it meant that Quinn Hughes would sign an extension in Detroit, but with where Detroit is at, if Quinn Hughes does not sign an extension here and he walks, you gave up a lot and set your franchise back for a year and a half to what? Make the playoffs. Cuz while Quinn Hughes is fan freakingastic, he doesn’t fix all the teams problems immediately. all in. You’d have to be super aggressive in your window. Yeah. Right. And then that would shrink your thought about your your your proverbial window so much. Now, I say all this, if Minnesota does end up extending Quinn Hughes, my entire opinion on this will flip. I’ll be like, I don’t know why we didn’t give up Simon Edson in that case. because if he was willing to extend where he got dealt and he didn’t just want to walk to New Jersey, then it makes it so much harder to justify not trading for it. As it stands right now, my whole argument is based on the idea that Quinn Hughes might still just walk away, but if he ends up extending, like I see that as worth it for Minnesota based on what they gave up because you’re getting a superstar in Quinn Hughes. you either ha if you’re Minnesota you have to win in the next year and a half like a lot or you have to extend him and I’m sure that prefer preferably they would like to do both. Um I don’t see why he wouldn’t like it too because Minnesota’s even though they’ve been mediocre for the last whatever they’re still a great hockey state. Oh for sure. Well, and and I I really do agree with you. You know, this is a I think a win-win for both teams. I think Vancouver certainly gets, you know, their money’s worth and gets out of uh gets out of it what they wanted to acquire for a player of that caliber. And I think Minnesota I I I won’t say that the trade is an outright failure if they don’t extend him, but that you know they better put together a really good next year and a half um if they don’t because uh that would be a huge gut punch to give up all they gave up and then not be able to. Right. And so the other thing that people I’ve heard say online is like, “Okay, well if you trade for Quinn Hughes, you give up all those assets and he decides he’s not going to stay, you could flip him at next year’s deadline like the Carolina Hurricanes did for Miko Ranton and recoup that value.” Well, I think there’s a little Right. Exact. I think there’s a little bit of a fallacy there because it’s not like okay you just tra you get Edmonson back like the players you might get back for Quinn Hughes year and a half a year or for half a year precisely like part of what got Miko Ratton in a hole at the deadline too was he got traded to a team that he had agreed to sign with right so in the eyes of the teams making the trade he’s extended so it’s not a rental if you manage to trade trade Quinn Hughes and you could flip him theoretically to a team that would sign him to an extension. Theoretically, you could get a Miko Ranton hull, but if you just trade him to a team that is going to use him, abuse him, and ship him out because they don’t have the cap space for a cup run, you’re not getting nearly as much cuz a year and a half, like you said, versus 30 games is way different value. So, I don’t I I’m not saying that that perspective is necessarily wrong. I’m just saying you got to think of all the factors that went into Ranton situation versus a Quinn Hughes sign in flip next year. So, or trade and flip next year situation. So, I am very frustrated at the fact that the Red Wings missed out again at a superstar like that. That feeling stayed with me all night. Like, it’s a situation, Scotty, where I understand the optics of why you didn’t do it for a player you can’t guarantee is going to stay because that’s a real big risk for a team that’s really can’t afford a setback, but at the same time, it’s like, man, Quinn Hughes would have made sure you were a playoff team like right away. Like, I really think that. Yeah. And that’s why that’s why Minnesota pulled Trig, right? Godfather offer. I’m so frustrated that we missed it’s I understand the reasoning, but it doesn’t mean I’m not frustrated because these guys don’t come around that often, right? And that’s the biggest point is there there are not players of this caliber that are just out there available to acquire in the open market very often. I I and knowing you were the finalist. You were the other guy. Right. Very often at all like you know this isn’t like a once a year thing. This is like a once every five maybe even 10 year thing. like this is uh yeah it’s a that’s a really big name that just got moved and uh yeah you were you were the bridesmaid not the bride so dude oh it’s frustrating I get it but it’s frustrating but there might be another sweep stakes next year so he might be cheaper next year so who knows there you go uh Scotty you have any final thoughts brother we ball we do ball oh I’m sorry I do want to say one more thing about the Quinn Hughes situation. I’ve heard a lot of talk about why the Red Wings didn’t like offer ASP up in the trade. The Vancouver Conucks had no need for ASP because they had Philip Peronic and Tom Wanderer both play right side. Both are the same archetype as ASP. They and Tom Wanderer is off to a pretty strong start with Vancouver, too. So, I just wanted to throw that in there because a lot of people were like in their mock trades have offered ASP and I did initially too and then I looked at their depth and I was like, “Oh, they don’t need ASP. They have their own young prospect doing the same thing and Philip Peronic. So, um, anyways, Scotty, let’s send it off to I guess Tuesday’s episode. Stay tuned for that. Same time, same place. It’s your team every day.

The Detroit Red Wings could have easily laid an egg in Chicago, the final game of a long road trip. But in a return to Chi-town, Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane showed out. John Gibson in net won his 5th straight start, earning his 2nd shutout of the season as well. Elsewhere, Quinn Hughes is traded for a HAUL in deal with Minnesota. #LGRW

  1. Let’s fucking go red wings. ASP is the truth. Would’ve been nice to get Quinn but oh well. Haven’t seen the wings play a full 60 min like they did last night in AWHILE! Against a bad team too… they played exactly how they should have! Andrew copp I am rooting for you i have sent so much hate ur way but right now ur okay. All lines of fwd look great! Shoutout danielson and soderblom. Young guys have REALLY lead the way for this team the past few games and it shows hpw much it helps!!! damn near forgot about Larkin watching danielson and aoderblom play… and lers not forget kaner and cat clicking, with substatial forechecking help from copp! Todd was right to move kasper down to the third line. A lot of good to take from the last few games.

  2. Personally I'm glad Detroit didn't mortgage the future to go get a superstar. Hockey is a team sport, and the Red Wings are gelling, getting fantastic chemistry, with the younger players coming along nicely. We've got vets like JVR and Copp who are really coming to life and bringing the new guys along. Would it be wise to throw all that up in the air to bring in a guy who…. hmm, maybe a prima donna after all, may get injured, may not re-sign? Doesn't Detroit have more points than this superstar's team…? It's a bit of madness to throw away what you have and assume that the other thing is better. Keep on going with what we've got! LGRW!!!

  3. You thought they got a haul for Hughes? I thought they basically stole him from Vancouver. Trading Hughes now would be like trading Nick Lidstrom in the early 2000s. I thought they should've at least got another first round pick, another prospect, and some lower round picks. He's the best left shot defenseman in the world. I'd give up Edvinsson, Kasper, MBN, and a 1st for Hughes. Then do whatever Quinn Hughes wants to get him to sign.

  4. I can't help but wonder: If Kasper wasn't having this epic sophomore slump, would the Wings have ended up with Hughes? Both Marco's aren't having great years.. so maybe it really came down to Edvinsson. I hear they specifically wanted a LHD. Still.. had Kasper been killing it offensively along with bringing his physical two-way game, could that have tipped the scales?

Glass half full: Maybe we are the team that trades to get him from Minnesota next year or he walks to UFA any ways and we snag him. It's still possible. That's all that counts lol.

  5. Patrick Kane has better points per 60 this year than DeBrincat if empty net is omitted.

Among the top 8 points/60 American forwards (Cat is 3rd, Kane 8th), Cat has a huge lead on the other 7 in empty net points, with 5 in 33 games. Kane has 0. These faked numbers – and they ARE fake – greatly skew relative perception of the two players among a fanbase that doesn't look that carefully into things.

The team is winning 17-3 w Kane on the ice over the last 8 games, 16-4 w Cat on the ice. Kane is +11 over the last 8 games, Cat +10. If you drop the 1 empty net point, the 2 have the same number of points over the last 8, only Kane's scoring has been way more clutch. In the last 8 games he's quietly been in on a ton of clutch play that made the difference between points and no points. And in fact his play to Rasmussen 6v5 late to steal a point at Boston, started the whole hot streak.
