Kyle Pitts & Atlanta Falcons Play Calling EXPLODES Vs. Bucs | Will He RETURN In 2026 For MORE Magic?

Zack Robinson called one of the best games of the year versus the Bucks. But can we expect more games like this if he’s brought back in 2026? [Music] You are Locked on Falcons, your daily Atlanta Falcons podcast, part of the Locked On Network. Your team every day. Welcome back to Locked On Falcons, part of the Locked On Network. now the number one sports podcast network in America which means it’s number one on the planet which means it’s number one in the galaxy of course I’m your humble host Aaron Freeman been covering the Atlanta Falcons for almost two decades formerly at falfans.com rip still going strong on the locked on Falcons podcast your daily Atlanta Falcons podcast and today’s episode is an all22 review of the Falcons week 15 win over the Bucks will be praising Zack Robinson’s play calling and whether it’s possible that he could do even better if we gave him a third year in 2026. We’ll talk about the why behind Kyle Pittz’s monster performance against the Bucks and why he probably shouldn’t be back in Atlanta in 2026. And we’ll talk about the Blitz being blow should go down swinging for the rest of the season. Today’s lockdown Falcons is brought to you by FanDuel. If you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit fanduel.com and place your NFL live bets all season long. So before we get into the All22 review, I do want to say that games like this were very entertaining to watch live and they’re very entertaining to review on film. And even though there are parts of these games that are frustrating at this point because the season is the way that it is, all I ask for the Atlanta Falcons for these final three games, you know, for the two Sundays and the Monday that are left this season, it’s just in entertain me. That’s all I need. I just I just want to be entertained. And so if it’s going to be these wild roller coaster rides of a football game, then so be it as long as you are entertaining. So talking about Zach Robinson’s play calling, u one of the best call games I think he’s had this season. I think there’s been five games. This is one of five games I feel like Zach has done a great job this year in terms of his play calling. The Vikings game, the Washington game, Buffalo, New Orleans in this one. You know, the extended all 22 uh for the lockdown Falcons insiders. We’re going to get more into uh a bunch of plays on the actual film and break it down uh to show all some of the good play calls he did. But at least for today’s audio and or video episode that you’re watching here on YouTube or on your preferred audio platform, to me, one play kind of really sort of summarizes the good play calling where the Bucks had basically been in Tampa 2 for most of the game whenever the Falcons were in a third and long situation and the Falcons were able to exploit that tendency on that fourth and 14 dialing up a Tampa 2 beater with that whole shot to David Sills which was sort of the critical play that set up the game-winning field goal for the Falcons. And so, Zack Robinson has been very scrutinized by a large portion of the fan base this season. We were scrutinizing Zack Robinson last year and I feel like Soulja Boy where, you know, they stole my whole flow, word for word, bar forbar. But, you know, we haven’t been as down on Zack Robinson as everybody else is because I do think there are signs of year two growth this game and several others are part of it. I think the big biggest area of growth for Zack Robinson has especially been uh prevalent over the last like seven games now, which is the improved play action passing attack. Now, I know the Dan Orlovskis of the world will link that to exclusively to the under center uh play action that we have seen uh you know very prevalent over the last three or four games since that week 12 win over the Bucks I mean I’m sorry over the Saints right but for those of us that actually watch every Falcons game as opposed to like three or four per year like the Dan Olowskis of the world we know that prior to that Saints game the Falcons play action passing attack had been very effective active for the three weeks prior to that when the Falcons were still primarily in pistol. And so it’s not really about the under center versus pistol uh thing. That’s part of it, but it’s not the the core of why the Falcons play action passing attack has been so effective over the last seven games. It’s because their route concepts are better. They’ve been doing, you know, prior to his injury, they were doing a great job featuring Drake London on those plays. And since Drake London’s injury, they’ve done a great job featuring Kyle Pittz. And if you watch lockdown Falcons throughout the offseason, we talked about that being a big part of why this play action passing attack could get better by unlocking Kyle Pittz in that and you saw some of that on display this past Thursday as well in the previous weeks. Now to illustrate that since week nine, since that Patriots game, the Falcons are basically a top 10 play action passing a team regardless of the metric that you look at, right? You look at passer rating, they’re ninth. You look at yards per attempt, they’re second. Completion rate, they’re seventh. first downs per attempt or eighth EPA per play, they’re second. And obviously, those rankings are going to fluctuate based off of, uh, Sunday’s games, uh, and whatnot, but generally speaking, they’re a top 10, uh, offense off of play action since that Patriots game. And the hope is that in a world where, you know, you potentially bring back Zack Robinson in year three, right, you know, can he pick up where he left off based off of these last seven plus games? Uh, and again, I want to remind folks that, you know, I said this on Thursday night after the game. We are operating here on Lockdown Falcons under the assumption that the Falcons are going to clean house with their coaching staff and front office at the end of this season. But we have been thinking about it, right, as the possibility if they if we’re wrong in that assessment, uh, and they do decide to run it back. And you know, to me, this improvement with the play action gives you hope for a possibility that year three for Zack Robinson could be better than year two. Um, you know, and I think if that’s going to happen, the Falcons going to have to bring in some type of like consultant, right? Someone who’s basically the Gary Kubak to Zack Robinson’s Kevin Stfansky. If you recall in 2019 when Gary Kubak joined the Vikings uh and led to that that you know helped take Kevin Stfansky to another level by basically teaching him his offense and Stfansky ran a variation of that and that was very successful for the Vikings. Shout out to Kyle Rudolph uh and and and Kurt Cousins uh beating the Saints in the playoffs that year. Um, and you know who that person could be for the Falcons in 2026 in this world where we’re running it back with Zack Robinson. I don’t know. Basically, we’ll think about it a lot more if you know we’ll cross that bridge if we get to it. I again, I don’t think we will get to that bridge. But, you know, the obvious name that kind of jumps out to me is kind of John Guden if the Falcons are going to do that, but we’ll see on that front. But, um, you know, there’s a possibility that that strategy could work. The problem I think, and we’ll explore more of this as today’s episode goes on, I still think you’re probably only looking at like a, you know, an eight or nine win season at best, uh, under those circumstances, right? And that’s based off of pretty simple math that I’m doing where if we’re saying, okay, Zack Robinson has called basically like 12 well-called games in his tenure here in Atlanta, right? five this year, Minnesota, Washington, Buffalo, New Orleans, and this Tampa Bay game. And then seven last year, which were both Bucks games, both Panthers big games, Dallas, Minnesota, and probably the Giants, right? And the Falcons are like 10 and two in those games. So, they’ve won about 85% of their Zack Robinson’s well-alled games. Um, there are 19 not so well-alled games and the Falcons are three and 16 in those games. So, they’ve lost about 85% of that. And so, you have about 40% of the games are well called by Zack Robinson, 60% not so well-alled. And if you map that ratio on to another 17g game season in 2026, that would mean about seven well-called games where the Falcons would go about six and one and 10 not so well-alled games where the Falcons would win one or two of those games. And so that’s where you get to me where it’s like, okay, you’re probably looking at like another eight, nine season at best. Now, to me, if you’re going to really put yourself in a position to make the playoffs next year with Zack Robinson, you’re going to have to flip that number in the sense of about 60% of your games or more are going to have to be well-alled games. You’re going to have to continue to win, you know, over 85% of those games. Uh, and then hopefully win more of the not so well-alled games. And, you know, maybe you could do that with improved defensive performance or something like that. uh improve special teams or whatever the case may be. But, you know, while I think that’s possible, I don’t think that’s necessarily a good bet. And so, I look at, you know, bringing back Zack Robinson, you know, there is some upside, but I don’t think it’s as much upside as we would like to believe it is. Uh, and so, you know, I think especially when you look ahead to, um, you know, the potential opponents that you’re going to face in 2026, you know, 60% or more of those games are going to be coming against quality defenses as things look today. Um, it’s going to be really hard to really flip that number, uh, in my humble opinion, without significant growth from Zack Robinson, uh, you know, this off season. And so that’s going to get us into um you know more of a conversation about the upside of the Falcons in 2026 when we talk about Kyle Pittz’s big game against the Bucks and what that means for whether or not he should be brought back in Atlanta. I think the answer is no. Kyle Pittz should not be in an Atlanta Falcon in 2026. I’ll explain why as we continue today’s lockdown Falcons. Today’s episode is brought to you by Aura Frames. So, obviously, Kyle Pittz was one of the biggest stars of the game, if not the biggest star of the game, as he often is against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And piggybacking on the playcon conversation we just had, I thought a big reason why is that the Falcons did a great job attacking the Bucks cover three as well as their man coverage with Kyle Pitts. There was a two-play sequence at the end of the second quarter that best exemplifies this where Kyle Pittz caught a 36-yer and then the 17 yard touchdown right after that and both of those were excellent designs attacking the Bucks cover three defense. Now, you guys know I’ve been one of the biggest Kyle Pittz apologists around. So, performances like this, you know, you absolutely love to see it. And I’ve seen a lot of conversation since this game about Kyle Pittz’s potential future in Atlanta since he is a free agent after this season. Over the past 72 hours, I’ve seen a lot of people suggesting online that the Falcons should absolutely keep Kyle Pittz and potentially franchise tag him as a way to keep him this off season. I don’t agree. I think you should let Kyle Pittz walk. I think tagging him makes little to no sense to me. According to overthecap.com, a franchise tag for tight ends in 2026 is projected to be about $16 million. The Falcons currently, according to overthecap.com, are projected to have less than $1 million in cap space entering the offseason. And when you factor in effective cap space, which factors in, you know, paying your rookies as well as having a full fielding a full roster, the Falcons are in fact 11 million over the 2026 salary cap. Now, we know that the Falcons can free up cap by cutting Kirk as a prejune one cut, as will as Darnell Mooney. That would free up about $30 million in cap space, but that would put you in about $20 million in effective cap space, and tagging Pitts is going to eat about $16 million of it. Now, there are other avenues where the Falcons could free up more cap space, restructuring contracts, extending Drake London, etc., maybe some trades and whatnot, but to me, tagging and trading Kyle Pittz just doesn’t make a a ton of sense. I don’t think the market is going to be that robust for Kyle Pittz, right? Maybe you get a third, maybe get a fourth round pick for him in the 2026 draft if you do that. I don’t think that really does a whole lot for this football team. Um, you know, I’d just rather let him walk and try to get a comp pick in 2027. I’d rather let him and Tyler Aier and and Arnoldi and Leonard Floyd and Kaden Ellis, all the sort of big free agents that are likely to get lucrative contracts from other teams walk in free agency so that you can probably get some day three comp picks in 2027. Now, of course, you’re saying, “Okay, well, what are we going to do if we sign some free agents and that cancels out some of those comp picks that we’re, you know, potentially going to get?” And that’s the point. like we ain’t signing any free agents if it’s up to me that are going to cancel out that. Uh we are going to basically approach the entire off seasonason with the idea of trying to maximize how many comp picks we get in 2027 rather than approach the offseason with the idea of we’re going to try to plug as many holes and try to improve this roster as much as possible. That’s my personal opinion. Now, um you know, you ask, okay, what if we give Kyle Pittz a contract extension rather than tag him? that will save a little bit more money. And I go like, what are you trying to do with Kyle Pitts on a contract extension? We know Kyle Pittz, again, this is coming from a Kyle Pitts apologist, but Kyle Pittz is a luxury player, right? He’s always been a luxury player, right? And so, you’re going to pay him what, $15 million a year, which is probably what his market value is going to be on the open market for a tight end. And you don’t really have an a solidified quarterback position. You don’t have a wide rece wide receiver, too. This is the exact same situation that the Falcons, you know, when Kyle Pittz joined the team back in 2021 that he came into and it led to a very up and down five years for Kyle Pittz because you didn’t have answers at these other spots. And so, you know, I sit here and go, why are you paying a premium that time you did it via the draft? How high you took him in the draft, right? But why are you paying a premium when you need basically have other fish to fry? You need to answer the quarterback issue. You need to address the wide receiver position, right? The definition of insanity, ladies and gentlemen, is doing the same things over and over again and expecting a different result. And so I think if you’re going to extend Kyle Pittz or whatever, like you’re just going to get right back into the same cycle that you’ve been for the last five years, which is on this roller coaster, right? And so why are you paying a premium for Kyle Pitts when you can probably find a tight end in free agency or the draft that’s probably not as good or athletic as Kyle Pittz is. probably not gonna run a 4-4, but you could probably find a guy that can run a 46, a 47, right, flat, and and be able to scheme him up in similar ways that you’re being able to scheme up Kyle Pitts this year for a fraction of the cost that you would have to pay to keep Kyle Pittz, especially given that the Falcons aren’t really going anywhere in 2026, right? You know, if they were coming off a winning season in 2025, we’d be much more justified to try to keep the band together, but what are you trying to build off of right now? you know, and where’s the upside at this point in time? And that gets us to the 2026 schedule conversation that I know 90% of my audience does not pay any attention to what this 2026 schedule is going to be until the schedule actually drops in May, but that’s something that we here on Locked on Falcons, we think about this stuff in December and January, guys. Right? So, right now, the Falcons in 2026 are projected to to face the AFC North and the NFC North uh as divisions, right? Their 17th game is going to be against an AFC West team and the current standings hold with the Falcons currently in third place in the NFC South. They’re going to face the third place team in the AFC West, which is the Kansas City Chiefs, right? So, you look at those nine games. It’s AFC North, NFC North, and the Kansas City Chiefs. Best case scenario, you’re going like what, four and five in those nine games, right? And the third place team in the NFC East and NFC West right now are Washington and San Francisco, right? If you go 4-2 in the division and then you beat both Washington and San Francisco, that gets you to 10 wins and possibly the playoffs. If you split with Washington and San Francisco, you got to go 5- one in the division to make the playoffs. And if you lose both games to Washington and San Francisco, which is definitely a possibility with the team as it currently is constructed, you got to go 6-0 in the division to make the playoffs, right? And so basically what I’m sitting here arguing guys is everything has to go right just for you to get to a nine or 10 win season. And we know everything’s not going to go right. It never does, right? You’re not you you basically can’t afford any pin setbacks, any significant injuries across your roster. You know, you got to get an upgrade in play calling all that those things. You got to check so many boxes just to get to nine or 10 wins as your ceiling. And basically, we know that the reality is you’re not going to reach your ceiling. You’re probably going to wind up being somewhere your eye level or closer to your floor, which is like six to eight wins in 2026. And I know there’s going to be a lot of people disagreeing with my math, but I’m saying like these are the same people that have been sitting here telling you for three years that the Falcons going to win 12 or 13 games. So, I feel like my math is a little bit better than those people’s math, right? And so, I sit here and I go, “What’s the point?” Right? Why are you fighting gravity? Gravity is pulling you down towards the bottom of the league, right? As Blade said, right? Some mofos are always trying to ice skate uphill, right? Don’t be Deacon Frost, ladies and gentlemen. The Falcons need to stop being Deacon Frost and stop trying to ice skate uphill, right? What are we trying to salvage in 2026? Whether we’re keeping pits or trading him for 2026 assets, let him walk. Let the other free agents lock walk. Get 2027 comp picks, right? and you’re going to be drafting a new quarterback in 2027, which I know is going to be a controversial take to some people, but like you need to accumulate the ammunition you need to either be in a position to trade up for that quarterback if need be in 2027. And so you need 2027 ammunition. And then you also need those picks that if you have to give up draft capital, you still have plenty of picks to actually go about and solve your problems. to have the draft picks to legitimately try and solve problems in 2027. That’s why you need these comps, right? And again, it’s not to sit here and be like, “Oh, 2026 is completely a throwaway season.” But you got to take your medicine in 2026, right? And taking your medicine does not include paying Kyle Pitts all this money, right? And if it is a throwaway season, the reason why you’re throwing it away is because a certain terrorist in the Falcons front office already threw it away because we sat here a year ago basically saying we got to see if Terry can dig himself out deeper. And Terry was like, I’m going to dig even down, right? The way up is down. Like no, Terry, it’s not right. And this gets to basically what I’ve been harping on these last few days and weeks is the reality versus the perception with this team where the reality is that this is like a six or seven win team. They are now seven and 10 in the last 17 games, right? And the perception is that this is really no this is really a 10 or 11 win team, right? And that that’s not reality, ladies and gentlemen. And Kyle Pittz to me kind of embodied this. Whether we’re resigning him to do what? Whether we’re tagging and trading him to do what? Just let him walk. Give me the ammunition in 2027, not 2026. We’re not going anywhere in 26. Just skate downhill in 26 if you get my drift. Right. I want to see Kyle Pittz ball out for the remainder of the season and then I want to see Kyle Pittz ball out somewhere else in 2026. That’s what I’m hoping for as a Kyle Pittz apologist. And you know, we’ll see if he does that and the Falcons follow my advice. And they probably won’t. I already know, right? I’m already setting myself up for disappointment this off seasonason and a bunch of complaining come March and April when the Falcons are like, “Oh, we’re, you know, we’re going to do stuff, right? I already know. I get it. just I’m just laying out what the reality is going to be. So, you know, we’ll see if Kyle Pittz is balling out in the future. This defense balled out uh at certain points in large part due to them bringing back the Blitz. And we’ll break down why this defense should continue to hammer the Blitz for the remainder of this season where there is upside at least in 2025 if they do that to wrap up today’s lockdown Falcons. So, we’re not going to spend a ton of time of this on the defense, but you know, the blitz was back, baby, right? Falcons had five sacks in this game against the Bucks. Two of them came on blitzes, but they had two sacks negated by penalties. Both of those sacks came on blitzes. The Falcons had a 41% blitz rate based off my charting in the first half, a 27% blitz rate in the second half. They came out swinging. They basically blitz on every pass play for the first like two series of the game or going the first series of the game and then going into the second series of the game and then my Q’s got injured and then basically they really dialed back the blitz after that point in time. And I think that was a contributing factor to why the Bucks started scoring points, right? Uh in my humble opinion. And so I sit here and I go, Jeff, got to go down swinging, my guy. We got to bring keep this heat on these quarterbacks, right? We talked about this with Jarvis Davis after that Carolina game where we talked about how the Falcons kind of went away from their identity in that game and were much more passive rushing three and all that stuff and playing coverage. And it’s like this is not how you win. This is not how you have won at all this season. You know, embrace your identity, right? You’re a blitzy, manheavy team. Run with that. They were able to do that, I think, early in this box game. It was effective. They they kind of dialed back and it stopped being as effective because I think this is what their defense is. Now, again, a big part of that was the injury to Mike Hughes and with Kobe Bryant. But I sit here and I go like whether it’s Mike Hughes, whether it’s Kobe Bryant, whether it’s Natron Brooks, it didn’t matter who the CB2 is this season, they’re all getting cooked, so might as well just keep doing it. What changed in this Bucks game was that AJ Terrell also was getting cooked uh in this game. But, you know, I think you got to sit here and and be, you know, very aggressive with the Blitz moving forward. I think part of that with the Bucks is that the Bucks statistically have been very vulnerable to the Blitz, much more vulnerable than any of the Falcons remaining opponents. But Jacobe Brassette has been one of the most sacked quarterbacks in the NFL against the Blitz. Right. You’re probably not going to be able to blitz Matthew Stafford to much effect. We’ll see, right? But then I think in week 18, so basically I’m saying get after Jacobe Brassette next week and then, you know, try with Matthew Stafford and he’ll probably carve you up. But hey, go down swinging. Uh, and then week 18, I want to see you get after Tyler Shock to close out the season. And right now, we know the Falcons have 48 sacks. And I say like be aggressive. Let’s see how far we can push this. Let’s see if we can get to 60 sacks, right? 12 more sacks. That means four more per game. I think that’s doable, right? if the Falcons are aggressive. And so I say to you, Jeff Ober, what do you have to lose? Go down swinging, my guy. Right, you can, you know, again, are you gonna be back next year? Who knows at this point in time, but if you can sit there and say, I got the Atlanta Falcons to 60 sacks, then you mean, you know, they’ll build a statue in front of the stadium for that, right? And even if it comes in like a five- win season or whatever the Falcons wind up being, like again, still an incredible achievement. So, I sit here and I go, Jeff, just go down swinging. Just dial up as much blitzes as you think is humanly possible. Again, I’m not suggesting that you they blitz every single snap, but it is one of those things where like I don’t want to see these conservative fourman and threeman rushes, you know, uh outside of very specific circumstances. So, we’ll see if the Falcons can keep this pressure going. again, like I I don’t think whoever’s playing corner for you should be affecting your ability to dial up blitzes is basically what I’m getting at. So, we’ll see if the Falcons continue to do that. We’ll be looking at some of the Falcons blitzes as well as their rookie defensive players on the extended All 22 review. We’ll be breaking down the actual film for the locked on Falcons insiders rather than just as so many of you every which we appreciate. you know, you’re listening to me talk about this or watching me talk about this on YouTube or wherever you get your podcast, right? 1. Who was throwing him the ball thought it was washed up Cousins! Guess you still don’t want to win next year if you stick with Penix or another QB.

  2. Ngl I don't trust Aaron's contrarianism sometimes. He praises Zac, complains about Pitts and Pearce breaking records, then says the NFC/AFC north are unstoppable in 2026. Worst episode of the year but whatever 😂

  3. Pitts is not a viable piece to the offense. That’s the reality. He does well if there’s no real other option. His rookie year was him and nobody else. Same as this Bucs game. Save the money and let him walk
