Listing to All The Kings Men pocast this morning, Jesse Cowen recited a stat that blew my mind. The Kings are 12th worst in NHL HISTORY on the power play.

It has been obvious the power play has not worked all season. I'm all for experimenting but it quickly became clear the five forward power play unit was not working. Unfortunately, they kept trying it even when it was clearly failing. On top of the lack of production, you had two extra forwards that were using a lot of energy on the power play, there was a breakdown of confidence because it failed so often, and it was often a momentum changer because they were giving up short handed goals.

In short, it has been abysmal. They finally ditch it and go back to a defensemen on the power play.

Absolutley nothing has changed. It is still abysmal and they are giving up short handed goals.

Hiller brought Brown in to run the power play. After 31 games this season, we are now 12th worst in NHL history. The fact that Hiller hasn't pulled the plug on Brown and found a new assistant to change the direction of the power play is enough of a reason for me to justify firing Hiller.

If Hiller had fired Brown yesterday, after that horrific showing against Vancouver and Calgary, I could justify giving him another 30 games, but Brown is still on staff so Hiller needs to go.

  2. It may be one of the worst power plays of all time, but have you considered the close calls and almosts? It actually makes us first. We’re right there.

  3. The one thing that has unified pessimists and optimists in this sub is how freaking bad the PP has been for AGES

Inexcusable to not be pulling out every stop to fix it

  4. Personally, I’ve seen enough of the entire coaching staff and front office. Firing Newell Brown is insignificant to this season. The problems with the team are much greater than a power play coach.

I was just thinking about Holland too, who was not my preferred choice for GM. I was willing to give him a chance. But retaining Hiller was the red flag that he’s got no clue how to make this team any better either, and were completely screwed next year when Kopi retires.

This is pretty much our last shot with this build. While the Kings remain in the hunt for the playoffs, they are not passing the eye test to be a real contender. After 31 games, I think it’s safe to say this is just what this team is.

  5. If you think this season is bad, next year the team will revolve around Byfield, Kempe, Fiala and Clarke and an aging Doughty which is pretty scary. Outside of Kempe we don’t have any legit top talent and the depth is abysmal.

  6. Keep Brown. Keep Hiller. Keep Luc. Let it get so bad that someone high-up clears house. At this point? I trust no one from Luc on down who will do anything to right the ship. So let it burn.

  7. The whole management staff is clueless. They even healthy scratch the leading PP goal scorer game after game. They have no idea what they are doing and I’m convinced Stevie Wonder would do a better job coaching this team.

  8. If only AEG still had a Tim Leiweke type team President that cared..ownership need someone between them and Luc, with Dan Beckerman leaving, don’t think there is any accountability

  9. Personally, I can’t remember the last time the power play worked. 2017? 1992? I couldn’t tell you, but the one I’ve seen this year easily looks like the worst one I’ve ever seen.

  10. We won’t get rid of Hiller so long as AGM Drew Doughty gets all the minutes he’s whining for

  11. Keep doing the same shit. Same result. People who know hockey, does hiller make in game adjustments?

For example, rams games yesterday second half, rams pretty much shut down Detroit’s offense, run game & more blitzes, especially in the 3rd quarter & offensively ran the ball even more effectively to take control of the game.

  12. I would say tank this season if there was a can’t miss guy or two in the draft but Doughty would never go for that unless they traded him & other vets.

They most likely will be aggressive in the trade line to bring in some creative scorers. I hope anyway.

  13. Just for context

I was talking about the NET PP% which is tbe power play combined with short handed goals.

The powerplay by itself as an offensive weapon is at 13.7%
    32nd this season
    65th worst since 1977-78

The NET PP% which includes giving up short handed goals is 8.4%

And THATS 12th worst since 1977-78

The kings at 8.4% are the only team THIS season with a net PP% below 10%

On the powerplay the Kings are allowing the highest shot attempts against per 60 in the league

  14. It could be Patel to the PP but what about all the OT loses? Think about all those extra points missed. The Kings could be in 1st with this tweek.
