Well, at least a ball ^probably won’t plug into the turf tonight.
If I remember correctly, they played something like 7 high school championship games plus a Pitt game back-to-back that weekend and the field was so torn up it needed to be completely replaced. But there wasn’t enough time to do it properly, so they just laid the new sod on top of the existing field. Then in the pouring rain, water pooled underneath the new layer and it was basically floating on top of the old turf. It is hard to imagine conditions being like that again.
Loved that game. There was a 1989 game as well where it looked like they were in slip n slides. Same two teams
The greatest game
I’ve only went to one Monday night game in my lifetime, and it was this one. Pretty bad when one punt is the most exciting part of the game. I’m now gun shy of ever going to another.

This game is when I realized how important fandom can be.
I was hit by a car Sunday and unconscious for like 12 hours. Came back to on that Monday morning, but was very hazy.
I still remembered Steelers had a Monday Night game and asked my nurse to turn it on. For 3.5 hours I was laying in a hospital bed but my mind was elsewhere. It just felt like watching another Steelers game – rooting for my team.
That game still hurts.
Ah, the ol’ Lawn Dart Game.
But we stopped letting 20 other teams play on the field during the Steelers season, right?
