Mikko Rantanen, Matt Duchene, Casey DeSmith & Glen Gulutzan Recap Dallas Stars Win vs. LA Kings

[music] saw some adversity and bounce back. It's you've done it a lot this year, but this is a good time to do it. >> Yeah. Yeah. It's uh you know, lose two in a row. You obviously look in the mirror what you can do better. I think we played a solid game, you know. Um penalty goal was good. Uh so yeah, I scored the goals that we needed to win. So so uh overall pretty good one. >> Nico, you're third in the league in assists. You had beautiful dime tonight to Matt Duchaine. What about this team or just you clicking with this team allows you to find your teammates so effortlessly? >> Yeah, a lot of good players around me, you know, a lot of smart players can play anywhere in the lineup. You know, we have a deep lineup wherever whoever you play with, you play with good players. So So that helps obviously. uh try to try to make the right play that's there and and guys are finding good good places to go and good spots like Duchi did on that goal, you know, driving back door there. So yeah, um I'm enjoying playing in this team for sure. It's it's fun. >> You have so many elite scorers on this team, but the five on five offense has just kind of been lacking in general. Obviously, you take a step forward tonight. What do you attribute maybe the struggles to and what can you take from tonight moving forward? >> Yeah, for sure. We knew we'd be talking about it a lot. You know, we got to generate more five on five and uh try to play more off offense in the in five on five, you know. Uh I think tonight was better even though, you know, maybe we we missed the net quite a bit today, so I don't think the shots were telling the whole story in the in the game. But but uh yeah, we just got to simplify a little bit. You know, we may be trying to do too many plays. You know, we just got to get bodies at the net and get pucks there and try to get some greedy goals. >> I know you and Keer played together obviously. What did you see on that that collision with him? >> Yeah, it was uh unfortunate. I was just driving the net and thought I thought my route was like top of the blue, you know. So, Dumalin was there kind of like pushing me that way. Uh I didn't see he was top of the blue. I I was kind of just watching Dumalind and he was battling with battling with him. So yeah, unfortunate to see him go down, you know. I told him right away, my bad. You know, [snorts] uh hopefully hopefully he doesn't miss too much time. >> Your first full season with Dallas. What's your assessment of this roster's depth, not only with health, but just in the lines as well? >> Yeah, it's been it's been great. You know, it's uh obviously it's helps when you're healthy, you know. um getting Dutchy back, Harley, you know, it it helps a lot. They're elite players and and uh when we're healthy, we got a really deep lineup and and good four lines that can roll roll games. So, it's uh it's a good good for our coaches to um you know, roll four lines and it's going to pay dividends in the end of the year. >> When you see a four a player on one of those those deeper lines like back score, does that get you guys a little extra fired up too? >> Yeah, for sure. He obviously the they work really hard, you know, they don't play as much maybe as the top six and and uh they don't play power play. They don't they don't get those looks. So So but they're doing incredible job in the penalty kill and scoring big goals like today game winner again. So So it's fun to watch those guys go to work >> forward. >> Uh yeah, I think we were patient. I mean I don't think there's I've seen a hockey game with that many whistles, especially in the first 10 minutes. It was insane. Um yeah, I mean it was one you had to, you know, you couldn't get frustrated with the lack of flow early on and you just got to, you know, stick with it and um thought we did a good job. I mean Casey was big and we needed him and I think, you know, we just stuck with it, stuck with it and we could had a I thought we had a really good first period. We started, you know, we're ready to go. I think you could feel the energy in here before the game and I think that was uh that was key and um yeah, I mean I think we got what we deserved tonight. I think we're, you know, we probably deserve to win that game. And, um, you know, special teams, you know, our PK did a great job. Obviously, they get the flu, they get the fluky one there, but I mean, that's that's just one of those, that's a one-off. So, um, I thought our PK did a really good job and we we got a little momentum from that second power play. And, um, so yeah, I it's a big win for us. We want to now springboard going into Christmas. I think it's it's important to um, you know, go into a break where you can kind of reflect uh, you know, with some wins and and some good hockey. How does it feel for you to see one go in for the first time in a while? >> Yeah. No, it looks great. I mean, as an offensive guy, you thrive off that and, you know, I think >> Yeah, I think it probably started Minnesota. That was the that was that the first game I, you know, I felt kind of felt the polish and I was getting touches and starting to feel my game come back. Uh, you know, um, physically I felt pretty good since Winnipeg. But, um, you know, as you go and you get more in the flow and, you know, tonight was one I just had to be patient. Obviously, there was a lot of penalties and a lot of disjointedness and, you know, I I felt when I got out there, I felt like I was rolling and felt good, but sometimes you got to just, you know, be patient, stay with it, and kind of treat every shift as it's the first shift of the game. So, um, yeah, I mean, you obviously want to build on that. And, um, it was good. I think I think I think we had a solid game tonight and that's a really good team over there as a deep team, mature team. Um, we talked about how good they are in 50/50 battles and I thought we did a good job winning a lot of those tonight. It seemed like you guys had a good push maybe after especially some of those moments of adversity, goals getting called back or penalties. Did did it feel like that to you guys too that maybe sparked something? >> Um yeah, I just think I've talked about it a ton and we're just we're a team that sticks with it no matter what in here and um you know we never kind of lose that even keel uh you know uh mentality and um I don't think we you know even that you know that goal goes in you know it's not deflating because Casey's so been so good this year. you know, it's a a tough play, little miscue, but you know, you know, he's going to continue to play well and and you know, he's going to give us a chance to win if we take care of business up front. So, you know, fortunately, we're able to do that and um you know, great to see Backer get one, too. I mean, that's a guy that works so hard every night. Huge on the kill. Um, you know, that whole line get chips in with the game winner. I mean, that's big for us. Oh, >> go ahead. >> Meek was third in the league and assist. His shot to you tonight. I mean, that was a great look playing with him. What makes his ability to find teammates so special? Yeah, I mean he's he's a lead player. I mean, he makes he can make plays like that. So, um I kind of I saw him get it and I knew that, you know, if there was a lane there, he'd find me. So, it's fun playing with a guy like that. And, um I think the three of us, if you know, when we're together, we can all do that for each other. So, um I mean, great great play by Johnny, too, on the entry that takes a lot of poise and um I was just kind of the you know, the recipient of of their play there. How do you assess how you guys have in terms of scoring chances, putting shots on net, and what from the third period can you kind of take moving forward in these next few games? >> I like that we stayed on the gas once we got up a goal. I think we kept trying to, you know, pin them in their end. And I think that's something that, you know, a lot of teams fall into the trap of, okay, we're up one, let's, you know, you want to be a good teammate. You want to do the right thing, get the red line, get it in. And you do that to a fault. I think you got to stay on the gas and keep on, you know, trying to trying to go and you get that third one. I mean, it's huge, right? Like Mo gets that that third one there and, you know, if you're able to put a game away before the goalie gets pulled, it's it's massive, right? So, um, I liked how we we stayed with that kind of killer instinct to to end the game and and not just, you know, go into prevent mode. So, um, I think that's that's good for us and it's something that I don't think we've done enough of. And, uh, we win a lot of games by a goal, two goals maybe. Yeah, I think we could do even a better job at continuing to to end games early when we're feeling it and, you know, um have that kind of hunger. >> Glenn's been emphasizing um improving five on five, but tonight you guys get to three even. Um so, was that a message going into the game? >> Oh, you got you got to score even strength. I mean, we know what the playoffs looks like and there's not many penalties and I mean, tonight was kind of that way. I mean, it's just a mature team you're playing over there. They don't give up a lot. They're one of the best defensive teams teams in the league. You know, two two power plays. So, you you got to depend on you got to your five on five has to be your calling card. And um I think it's been, you know, probably the maybe the weak point offensively of our team this year. And I think we got to continue to to, you know, our record's great. I mean, we're in a good spot, but you're always looking for ways to get better, and that's a way that we can take a step is be a lethal team five on five, which we've been the last two years. scoring your goal tonight. Was that kind of the notch that you needed to see to show that you're 100% back? Is there any part of your game that you're waiting on? >> I I don't think the goal has anything to do with being 100%. I think I think, you know, you look at the first period and some of the plays you look at last game, some of the plays, I think those are plays I make when I'm at 100%. And um I that's you can't ever rely on production to um to to show you where your game's at because you're going to have games where you should, you know, have a bunch of points and you get nothing and you're going to have games where you weren't that good and meet you might get on assists, right? So you can't you can't uh you can't totally reflect. We all want to produce offensive guys. That's what we're prepared to do. That's our job. But I think it's the the process and how you play the game that's important. And I think, like I said, I think the last three games I could really feel that coming. And um you know, I'm feeling confident. I'm feeling calm out there. A lot of the anxiety of you know, coming back is is fading away. And um you know, so I just want to keep going with it. >> Another fun game. You guys seem to wait and then come up with a big play at the right time. >> Yeah, huge goal by backer. Um obviously Duchy too. Um just big goals from that that shift by Backer was great. you know, he he got the puck out of the zone, held the guy off, he got it in there, and then obviously great tip. He's had a couple really nice tips. He's great at getting the net front and uh I'm happy that he got rewarded. >> Yeah. Uh the Kings were playing very hard early on. You guys, it seems like the start of the third period, really ramped up your game. Was there something said in the second intermission or just you guys knew you need to do that? >> Yeah, you know, Gully just said finish this one off by outworking them and I think we did a great job of that. Obviously, we didn't give them much in the third and finished the game off right and that was uh it's a good team over there and they they came hard, but we played hard here. It was great. >> Is that a good lesson, especially coming off the Florida game and Gully talked to us a lot about just that they got, you know, they worked really hard. They're the Stanley Cup champs. >> Yeah, definitely. It's, you know, there's no bad teams in this league and you have to outwork the other guys to win games most of the time. So, definitely a good lesson. >> You and Jake have had to pick your teammates up a lot of different points in the season when their goal happens. seems like just a little bit of an awkward moment for you. You kind of look to your teammates to do the same for you. >> Yeah, they and they did. Um I'm really happy that that goal didn't cost us anything and just a miscommunication between me and Mero and um yeah, nice to put that one in the rearview mirror. >> You have a lot of teammates that we can say this about, but just somebody so consistent like Mo. This is his first full season in Dallas. What's it like to get the full Mo randon experience? >> Yeah, it's great. He he gets big big points and big goals at uh when we need it. You know, tonight's no different. We're trying to close out a game and uh you know, they're about to pull the goalie and he tacks another one up there and kind of takes the pressure off. So, um it's just it's fun to watch. >> Between some of the the penalties and you had goals waved off, too. Did you feel like that adversity maybe sparked something in you guys a little bit too? >> Yeah. Yeah, it felt like um a lot of things were going against us for the first couple periods and um it was just nice that we didn't let it get to us and kind of fueled us a bit. >> Uh was the start of third period kind of almost like a statement there. It seems like there was continuing adversity that you guys faced from previous games and just seems like you really stepped up as a team there. Yeah, you know, the that that's the stingiest hockey team in the league, right? Defensively. And um you know, we just came off the Florida game and and um we're talking about staying with it, right? When it's when it's tight, it's tight checking and and I thought our guys did a really good job of just staying with it and finally started to break through. Um, so the the goal in the Dutchies goal was big uh in the in the second and then we got a little momentum from it. Uh, but I like the way our guys stuck with a game. That's again that's the stingest team in the league right there. So um, yeah, we did a good job. [clears throat] >> Seemed like Dutchy did a lot of Dutchy normal plays tonight. What' you see from his game today? >> Yeah, you know, you could see his timings getting back and um, you know, he created some offense even right on that second power play. I think they only maybe had 30 seconds or whatever they had out there and he had a couple good looks, held on to pucks and that's what Duchie is going to bring for us is uh you know when he gets his motor up and running completely is just in those against these teams that play man on man he he he uh he can hold on to pucks he's a heavy body and he can twist and turn and buy time and make little plays in tight spaces. So, um, you know, that, you know, it's going to help increase our ozone time and and, uh, and, you know, just transfer the puck and another guy who can make high level plays. >> What was your message when Jamie's goal gets gets wiped out there, um, to to the bench, I'm sure, on top of some of the other things, it looked like that could have been a frustrating moment, but, you guys responded well. >> Well, if you want the truth, um, I said to Jamie, "How hard did you push his pad because it might be in?" He goes, "Pretty hard." So, uh, I knew maybe we didn't have a chance. So, um, but you know, it it didn't go in anyway. Um, so, um, but yeah, no, we just I think it's best for our group, uh, just knowing these guys, uh, and how even keel our guys are is that we probably not don't let any of that we don't let any of that get to us. I mean, it's out of what we can control. So, we're just trying to control what we we can do. How about on the other disallowed goal, the goalender interference? What explanation you give? >> Yeah, for for me that one um had the score been different. Uh >> that that that one's close for me to challenge. Um I I thought some of the contact was in the white and there was some pushing there and you know I I I hope their goalies I hope Keer's not hurt and and all that stuff, but um it would have been close for me to be honest with you. Um, you know, there there it certainly starts outside the white and that's kind of the criteria for those things, you know, is is he's going into the blue on his own and he wasn't really. So, um, unfortunate, you know, they collided. Um, but, uh, would have been close, different score for me. >> What's to say about Casey bouncing back from his mistake. >> Yeah, I mean, uh, he's just been so rock solid all all year. Um, [clears throat] and those things happen, right? those things happen and >> affect you and >> Absolutely. Absolutely. They they can get in your kitchen and you can stack a couple uh other things on there. He just rebounds right away. I I I just love his mental toughness. >> Oscar Beck also, I think, he took a puck up high. He he also had a couple penalties, but then he scores that the game-winning goal. I guess that had to be a big moment for him. >> Oh, it was a big goal for us. And uh for a guy who does everything right every day, you you just love when they get rewarded for going to doing the right things all the time. and uh you know he's um he's a guy that you know we haven't talked about a lot here but um he is very valuable to our group. You know he's he's uh he's such a good uh two-way player. Um is he's an integral part of that penalty kill. He's got a long stick. He's got long range. Uh he's got hockey IQ. Um you know he he's a hard guy to play against in his way and uh um he he probably doesn't get as much credit as he is and he he surprised me. I mean, lot you guys have asked me the question, who surprised you? He surprised me. He's a He's like a security blanket for a coach. >> Great. Thanks. >> [music]
