New York Islanders vs Detroit Red Wings Postgame Recap, Reaction, Highlights | 12/16/25
[music] You're listening to Up the Turnpike [music] with host Mitch Anderson, Mattal. Hello and welcome to the Up the Turnpike postgame show. What's going on? I'm Molir riding with you guys solo. I appreciate you hanging out. a little bit later Tuesday night. Usually Mitch is doing hockey and I do the Jet stream uh and then we hop over here and do it. But Mitch is recovering from surgery. He will be all good to go tomorrow for the regular pod. So, it's just me tonight. Uh, and we'll go through some comments as well, but I really wanted to go through uh this game with you guys, break down the goals, a 3-2 loss to the Detroit Red Wings in a game that I didn't think they played particularly great, but I I thought there was a chance they would pull this one out, especially after Scott Mayfield would tie it late. Uh, but without further ado, let's just hop into this one. Uh, the Islanders would jump on the board first in the first period. Emil Heinman scores. Uh Matthew Barczell and Jonathan Duan pick up an assist here. Uh we'll see it go up the other way. And Emil Heinman, man, he just lets this one rip. Uh right from there. Really nice shot on the offside. He's a lefty playing or coming up on the right side on that play. Uh really needed a goal, right? I know he's had some of these shootout goals and he's been the hero in the shootout recently, which is great. Islanders don't usually have anyone who could do that. Uh, but I think what really stands out from this is, you know, it's been a little bit since he scored at, you know, in regulation at five on five and, you know, he gets number 11. I absolutely loved on the broadcast on the broadcast how they called out going into the first intermission, uh, you don't trade a guy like Emil Heinman. And, uh, this is exactly what TD is saying to get us started. This is why you don't trade Emil Heinman. And SS follows it up right after Mitch's dayto-day. Lol. Mitch is dayto day. Uh he will return tomorrow. How about that? After surgery on Monday, we'll be back in the lineup on Wednesday. That's a quick turnaround. Good on that. And TD, I see your comment under that. We'll get Schaefer in there. I do have to update uh the intro, that's for damn sure. Uh but one- nothing Islanders after the first period. Uh Detroit had the shot advantage 8-7. Uh and if you go down and want to look at uh penalties, there were no penalties taken in that first period, but the Islanders leave period number one uh with the with a one- nothing lead. The score would remain the same through the second period. Again, kind of a low event, right? Like you look at these shot totals, you see them on the right hand side. Islanders with seven to Detroit's five. Uh there was one power play opportunity for uh Oh, no. I'm sorry. It was a Islanders power play opportunity at the end of the second. It was a Detroit penalty. Uh Edson takes one. Two minutes for hooking on Matthew Barzal late. Islanders unable to capitalize. I feel like if they got that goal before the end of the period going into the third, up two would have had you feeling like you were in a good spot. Uh there was a few seconds of carryover into that third period. uh but they were unable to capitalize on that in the third period shortly into it. Right? You'd get Detroit to tie it up. Uh Sandine Pelico scores his fourth of the year right off the face off. Uh which is a you know you're going to see him at the point here, but he'll come down and get more uh involved and just sneaks it through Ilia Sroken, right? Like kind of comes down. It was a it was a weird angle. He went up high. It was it was a nice shot, but um that's that's one that at least watching I I wasn't necessarily expecting um and especially at that time, right? Like you just you had a few seconds of power play time roll over. It was a very short amount, but you did have, you know, however many seconds of power play time left at that point uh to start the third period. And then the momentum feels like it swings the other way with Detroit's goal. Um, and then they would go immediately on a power play right after that, right? Matthew Schaefer takes uh a two-minute holding uh at 317, which the goal was at 203. So, um, less than a minute later, Schaefer goes off for holding. And Alex de Brinkit on the power play. Dangerous player on the power play. We saw it twice tonight. Here's the first one. Uh, kind of just lets it go from the OV office, right? steps into it, rips it on net. It's not the one quite the one-time that you like to see from Alex Ovetkin, but from the offside, gets it to go. Um, you know, pull up luck on this one. You're hoping maybe he could step up and block this shot. It goes through uh and it goes through Ilia Sroken. So, uh, what was a one- nothing lead going into the third quickly becomes the Islanders trailing two to one. Uh they would get a rare Scott Mayfield goal though. You don't see Scott Mayfield scoring too many goals, but this is a really nice play especially by a JG PJO. And it's been nice having him back in the lineup and getting to watch him. Uh you'll see it right here. Pouro comes in. I don't know if this will really do it justice. Slows down. Beautiful feed across the ice. And Mayfield just heading to the net, man. When in doubt, go to the front of the net. Gets a good opportunity to put one on net and he scores. and ties up the game two apiece with just over eight minutes to play in this game. It was at the 1126 mark of the period. So two to two is your score. Islanders tie it back up. Unfortunately, Scott Mayfield give and Scott Mayfield taketh away. Right. So he takes a trip and call late in the third. Detroit goes to the power play. Alex de Brinket again on the power play in tight on that offside. Bounces out, steps in, passes over. We'll see it get worked back to him. Shot blocked and then the rebound goes in the back of the net. So twice the Brinkhead on the power play from this circle is able to get it to go home. Pull again. He steps up. He he does block the first attempt. We talked about maybe blocking the other shot uh on the first one. did block it, but it goes right back to Debrinkat and he fires it on net and puts the Red Wings up 3 to2 and that would pretty much close it out for this game. The Islanders lose 3 to2 on the road. Um you'd have a No, that was it. That was the only penalty. I I'm sorry. It was the Schaefer and the Scott Mayfield one. Um I was looking to see if there was anything else. Um that those were the only two. Um but a 32 loss on the road in Detroit. Now, we'll go through I'm going to pull up some of your guys' comments, too. And again, I appreciate you guys hanging out later on a on a Tuesday night with us. Uh, shots on goal, low number for both teams, right? 21 for Detroit leads the way. The Islanders finished this game with only 18 shots in that third period. They had only four. One of their four go, but just really not a not a great game uh from the Islanders tonight. Faceoff percentage Islanders better 54.7% to the Detroit Red Wings 45.3. Uh if you look at the box scoreer because we've like to do this with JG Pou and his faceoff numbers 54 and a half%. I thought it'd be a little bit higher than that. It it wasn't. Uh okay, let's continue with this power play. Massive difference, right? Penalty kill goes 0 for two. Islanders power play goes 0 for one. special teams. Their special teams has been better recently, which is why they were on a six-1 run before going into this game, but they can't kill either of the two penalties and they can't score on their lone power play opportunity. They get one five on five goal and that's it. That's all she wrote. And unfortunately, that's most nights that's not going to be be enough for you. And tonight was one of those nights. Penalty minutes four for the Islanders, two for Detroit. Hits were 1614 Islanders with two more blocks. 21 for the Islanders to the Detroit Red Wings 19. Giveaways Detroit had more 13-9 takeaways were 5-3 Detroit with more takeaways. We'll take a look at the box score numbers and then get into the chat on the postgame show. So, your leader in ice time with no Bo Horvat, you knew it was going to be Matthew Barzell. He comes in at 22 minutes and 26 seconds. Jonathan Drew in second on the team in ice time at 2047 for forwards. Uh Mark Gakcom with the least amount of ice time tonight, 1113. Another no surprise. The lowest amount of ice time being 1113. What does that tell you? They're rolling four lines. And without Bo Horvat, it's something that they need to do. They can't just rely on one group to get it done and then play the fourth line like seven, eight minutes a night. They were doing that earlier on in the season, but to the fourth fourth line's credit, they've earned themselves some more ice time with how Sazikas Mlan and Mark Akholm have played together. So, good on them for putting themselves in the position to get the more ice time. Schaefer played a ton tonight, 25 minutes and 56 seconds. Did have that penalty, uh, which led to the first Brinkat goal. Uh, as for least amount of ice time, Travis Mitchell 1504. Uh, Travis Mitchell, he didn't have any uh, points in this game. Did finish a uh, plus one 18 shifts. Did have a shot. Um, I was curious to see did anyone have it was a Heinman who Oh, no, that's blocks. I'm sorry. But he still had three shots. Anders Lee three shots. Um, those were really the guys who were, you know, getting getting pucks towards the getting pucks towards the net tonight. There wasn't a lot. you only have 18 shots. You're not going to see multiple guys ripping three plus shots. It's really only those two guys uh where the offense was coming from. So, uh that's your recap on what happened in this game. Uh want to go through again and talk about some of these uh go through and and talk about some of these comments. I said it, but PS says it too. Mayfield giveth and Mayfield taketh away. I think that is the absolute perfect description for this game for Scott Mayfield and and why at times he can be a frustrating player and not that he's a goal scorer, but he does good things outside of just scoring goals. And, you know, uh he has moments where he looks like, okay, like yeah, the contract's not good, but you can, you know, live with it because he's serviceable, you know, third pair right-handed shot defenseman and then the late dumb penalty and you're scratching your head going, man, how many more years are left on this contract? Cold-blooded clown says, "We lose a winnable game because Schaefer and Mayfield take two crap penalties. I expect it from Mayfield, but not 48. On to the next." And I think that's a good mindset, right? Like I'm not going to It wasn't a good penalty, but I'm not going to kill Matthew Schaefer. Um, unfortunately, it happens. Islanders were previously rolling and playing well, and I don't want to harp on this game too much and talk like the sky is falling or anything like that. I don't feel that way. I don't think most of the chat feels that way either. So, you know, I it's a game that they probably could have won, but at the same time, like I said, I I don't think they played great tonight either. Yeah, this is a this is true. PS says a ridiculous icing by Pock followed by a defensive zone faceoff loss by Richie. Bad combination. That's that's true. That's the truth. Scarlet chimes in says bad third cost them. Sroken made some great saves. Yeah. And you know what? I didn't give you the numbers. Sroken finished with a 857. Uh but he did make when called upon. I thought he did make some good saves. I don't pin this on Ilia Sroken. It was just a couple, you know, a couple mistakes cost him and and that's hockey sometimes, right? Usually these games are 3-2. I know the Islanders have gone through stretches where they're scoring lots of goals. Um, but that slowed up a little bit and you have to win games 3-2 and and tonight just wasn't one of those. Richard Lord says you could see the loss coming. They were outplayed for stretches in the first and second periods. They had the same sort of trouble against the Lightning. That's true. With the Lightning, they were just able to overcome those things. And that's part of why I thought they would still have a chance to win. But like if you pull up I I'll try to pull it up here. the um the money puck deserve to winnow meter. Deserve to winnow meter. Let's see if they have this for tonight's games. Is this 100 to zero? Uh well, that's chance of winning, but can we click on it? Will it give me the deserve to win? Yeah, 80.3% or I was right around 19 to to 20%. So, um, it was one that I thought they could have pulled off, but unfortunately just didn't have the juice today to do just that. Uh, what else do we got? We got We did TDs. This is why you don't trade Emil Heinman, but had to pull that up again because that was their first goal of the game. Brandon's kind of saying how I'm feeling. Some of you all are overreacting to this loss. Isles are in a good position at the moment. No reason to panic right now. I I'm not I'm not in a panic over this game. Uh games like this happen. It wasn't It wasn't a good one. They still had a chance at the end. A dumb penalty really cost them a big one, I thought. Um I I I put the There's many things in a hockey game, right? It's 60 minutes that that can cost you a game. And I don't want to say it was only Scott Mayfield in that penalty, but it was just it was in a really bad spot. And that was like the final final touch. Good comment from PS saying Shabanov has been bad lately. He just hasn't been really noticeable and some defensive lapses too. I know they really don't like Maxim Ciplov right now, but I wonder if sitting Shabanov down for a game or two that might not be a bad idea. Brandon says Mayfield goal was so out of nowhere and it's funnier because he lost us the game and followed up right after that. Mayfield to go to the game even with the goal. It's he did right after that, right? It was just what, six minutes later, he takes that dumb penalty. And like I said, it it was a very, very frustrating. Gary chimes in. Don't forget to like and subscribe. Although, I'm guessing everyone here is probably a sub. Gary, you're doing the Lord's work. Thank you very much for always being in here, hanging with us, always putting that in there. Uh, we're growing, man. We're up over 2.7,000 subscribers. It's awesome. And all thanks to you guys who are here after, you know, for the our postgame videos. And, you know, I like doing it, you know, with with Mitch and our our banter back and forth, I think, is really what makes the show great. But, you know, we're teammates and, you know, when my guy goes down uh and has to get surgery, I'm going to step up even if it, you know, it's later. It's 10 10:30 start time on a on a game that ended about an hour ago, but still have the dieards hanging out with us here. I like this comment from TD who says, "Swap Mitchell for George." I I liked both Isaiah George's and Marshall Warren's game I think better than Travis Mitchell. And I don't think Travis Mitchell has been horrible. Like we've definitely seen in recent years Islanders defenseman, young Islanders defenseman come up and struggle worse than I think that Travis Mitchell has played to the early starts of his career. But I agree with this. I I I would also add in Marshall Warren in addition to Isaiah George. Uh we got time for a couple more. Druan needs to uh Druid needs to more than always looking to pass move maybe. Would love to see Heinman on power play instead of Druid. Yeah, I I ju I don't like Druin and Barzal together. I've said that a million times on the podcast uh and here and I think Heinaman he has that shot. Why aren't you using him on the first power play? Pia says same agent unbelievable Pok makes more money than Pel. Pel has now surpassed him by a mile. Pel is you know Pel's been really really good this year. Pock has had a bit of a resurgent year. Uh, as the year's gone on, I think he's gotten better. Tonight was not a great Pock game, though, to be fair. Uh, if we're being just honest about it. Um, but I think Pulock's been mostly fine. It's the right the righties tend to get more money even I agree. Pelic's a better player. Um but pull in and the and the right-handed shot. Brand says, "Oh, Barcel again doing way too much." Suken bailed him out in the third on a turnover. He's forcing it. And with that's kind of my take and I think this is a good place to to end the the the show for tonight is with Matthew Barzal and especially without Bo Horvat. I think he's really tr he's he's trying too much. And you might be saying, "Well, aren't they supposed to give it their all on trial all the time?" That's not that's not what I mean. I I think he's trying to do too much. And Brandon perfectly sums it up uh with how he he said it there. He's trying to compensate for Bo Horvette being there, not being there, and the the lack of offense, right? Because it's not just Bo Horvat. Kyle Paul Mary, who's, you know, was popping in goals to start the year, he's not here either, and he's not coming back. So, um, the offense in a little bit of a tough spot. I think Barzal is trying to compensate and it just, you know, wasn't working tonight. But, thanks for hanging out, guys. I appreciate you. We'll be back with a podcast tomorrow night. Good show Matt
Late in a game, especially a close game, it’s almost a certainty that Scotty will take a penalty.
Still playing well
