Luke Weaver becomes latest Mets signing, who comes next?
Dan, what do you think of the Weaver signing for the Mets? >> I agree. Diaz should be a Met, but let’s see. So, we got Klay Holmes, Devin Williams, Luke Weaver. They’re going to get a Rodish Chapman next. Maybe Goose Gosage. See what he’s up to. Get these former Yankee closers here and just keep adding to the pile. Look, I don’t hate it. I mean, I got to be quite honest with you. I don’t hate it. I mean, Luke Weaver, look, relief pitchers are like weather, right? They’re fickle with each passing day, one year to the next. So, I think that Weaver is due for a bounceback season here for the Mets. You know that he’s got closing experience, which you like. The concern that I have, if you could play like psychologist here a little bit, is what kind of an effect is this going to have on somebody like Devin Williams who last year lost his closer spot in the Bronx be and Luke Weaver took over. What if Deon Williams gets off to a slow start again this year and then oh by the way, there’s that Luke Weaver guy again. You wonder what kind of mind games it plays with him. You just want him to settle in and pitch and do his job. But in terms of depth and for that bullpen, I [snorts] like it a lot actually. >> I love your comp about relievers and the weather. That’s perfect. It really is. It’s unbelievable. Um, look, there are things to like about Luke Weaver. He’s really hard to get a hit off of. Uh, you know, last two years, uh, 5.6 hits per nine and 6.4 hits per nine. That’s pretty good stuff right there. The weird thing to me is though that he gives up home runs. He’s one of only three relievers in Major League Baseball to give up double-digit home runs in each of the last two seasons. That’s not exactly elite company [music] there that Weaver is on that list with. No, no offense, fellas, but you gave up a lot of long balls. Uh, so there’s some things to like here and there’s some things to be a little wary of and you know I think Met fans ought to get used to the fact that this guy’s going to give up a bomb that’s going to cost them a game at some point. I know it’s the lot in life. >> He did it to McNeil in a subway. >> McNeel Springer, do I need to continue? Last year he gave up a ton of big home runs and to basically was a point we didn’t want to see him anywhere near a big game. To me, this signing boils down to what version of Luke Weaver are you getting? Because two years ago, the Yankees don’t go to the World Series without this guy. He came in and was the ultimate fireman. He stepped in the closer role when Klay Holmes couldn’t do the job and was instrumental in their postseason success. Last year he was awful in the second half of the year. I don’t know if he was tipping pitches. I don’t know if it was a crisis of confidence, but it clearly wasn’t the same version of Luke Weaver. I have to admit, I am not the least bit surprised that Devin Williams ended up as a Met when you consider David Sterns had him for years with the Milwaukee Brewers. When I saw this one getting ready for the show today, I understand your reaction and I understand your fatigue. You’re like enough already with the Yankee guys. I get it. I totally get it. Especially a pitcher who over the last two months of the year couldn’t get anybody out. That’s the thing. Williams as well. He was a failed Yankee closer. Klay Holmes failed Yankee closer. Same thing with Luke Weaver, failed Yankee closer. I’m not opposed to signing certain Yankees. Obviously, Sodto I love. Wouldn’t mind getting Bellinger in here for the Mets as a need. And I’m not opposed to taking a flyer on some bullpen guys, but my god, I mean, they’re going to this wall way too often. And not to mention, you paid more for both Williams and Weaver than you would have paid for Edwin Diaz. So, those are reasons why I can’t get behind it. What’s next, though, and for the Mets now moving ahead in in free agency? >> Well, S, I’ve got my mind on right-handed power for them. They’re lacking that because Pete’s not on the roster anymore. I know this is this isn’t a slam dunk super sexy name, but Auaneo Suarez is still out there. And is there a world in which he accepts a short-term deal which is seems to be a stern special in this winter [music] and that would be good. And he comes in maybe you play him a little bit of at first base a little bit because they are teaching uh infielders to play first uh in in Mets land these days uh with Palano. So he you know he played he’s played a handful of games there. I think three in his career. You give him a little time at first base. You give him a little time at third base. Little time as a right-handed DH. He hit 49 home runs last year Sal. So, the Mets need some big right-handed pop. He might be an answer. >> They need some pop, period. And and you’re not going to like this because I know your Yankee fatigue. I get it. But Bellinger, like you said, you you know, Bellinger, you might look, he checks a lot of boxes. The thing you like about Bellinger, well, a couple of things you like about Bellinger. Number one, the positional versatility, I think, is huge. David Sterns has talked about run prevention. That’s something that the Mets need to improve here. Bellinger also think about where he’s played in his career. Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, big markets. You know that he can hit it here. And guys, when you look at this Mets team on paper, from the one that finished last year, a team last year, by the way, that wasn’t good enough. You look at them on paper right now, they got a lot of holes in that lineup. I mean, that lineup, if they had a game tomorrow, it’s not scaring anybody. Let’s face it. Plus, Sodto can use some protection in this lineup. Get [snorts] me Cody Bellinger in here. >> Okay, I’m looking at right-handed power, too. And I’m looking at the trademark. Two names. Byron Buckton, if the Minnesota Twins are willing to tango, Fernando Tatis Jr. if the Padres’s are willing to tango. I need right-handed power. Need that balance with Juan Sto. And I know you’re gonna kill me. More Yankee fatigue. How about Michael King in a rotation, S? Why not another Yankee? >> Boston’s always hurt, though. That’s the only thing. >> Good pitcher, though. Good pitcher. I can like enough with the Yankees. I don’t even mind King. But it is becoming a ridiculous thing here. It’s every guy that they’re signing is from the Yankees. And usually it’s a Yankee leftover from their bullpen. King will be okay. Bellinger will be okay. The other one >> concerned with the splits with Bellinger. I mean he he really ra >> I don’t think look he he’s not going to provide the power bat that they need to replace Pete Alonzo however he is versatile could play center left and first base so that’s appealing to me I’m not going beyond six years for Bellinger and even at that point if the Mets are reluctant to go to five years for Pete why am I going for six years for Cody Bellinger

Still no starting pitching…great.
đź—‘
everyone likes new york not the yankees .
Why not Kazuma Okamoto for 1st base and LF get Cody Bellinger
This met team will be a disaster in 2026
Stearns keep picking up Yankees bums.
Devin Williams will close out every met win, unless we blow teams out… it’s nice to imagine and have big dreams lol LFGM
Hoping Cody Bellinger signs on Christmas Day with the Mets…
It doesn't matter how many or how good their relievers are if the starters don't pitch better and later into games.
Stearns is not finished yet
If Williams and Weaver didn’t pitch for the Yankees – they WOULDN’T be on the Mets
Also Williams had a horrendous year in NY but nevertheless he gets rewarded $50 mil by the METS
DFA Stearns and get a real GM and good talent
Sal and the cat nxt to him clowns
And scarecrow too
Locotta complains then he will b kissing there ass if they do well in season
No wonder they drop his show
Because u not GM Sal
Probably looking to sign Jordan Romano he had an ERA over 8.05 Looks like a starter for GM Sterns way of thinking..
Soto, Clay Holmes, now Weaver, and he's got his eye on Bellinger. At this rate, David Stearns should just do a straight-up swap for the entire Yankees roster he hasn't already signed. Just change the name from Mets to Yankees East.
