What would a trade look like to bring Nick Pivetta to the Mets? | Mets Hot Stove
What what what a potential deal here between the Mets and the Padres’s potentially look like? >> Well, about a week ago, Gary, in Orlando, there was a lot of talk about a blockbuster type deal. And there are a lot of names thrown around, right? Notice Paveta, but Bogart’s Tatis Lindor’s name was thrown out there. 99% of those don’t happen. So, I think the more realistic one is what we’ve been hearing a lot more recently is a guy like Nick Paveta, their starting pitcher, who had a career season last year. It really uh under three erra. And this type of deal is something [music] because he has three years of control left and they’re trying to shed money would make some sense I think on both sides. The [music] Padres’s would get a guy like Sprro who would be a major league ready starting pitcher a prospect and more a beo and then one of guys like Yuing or or or Williams who are close to the [music] big leagues could be in the big leagues next year. The Mets get one of their starting pitchers. He [music] wouldn’t be a number one type starter but a number two solid guy maybe right behind Mlan and [music] you’d have him under control for three years. That’s the the most important thing is is that you have them under control. They’ve been linked to Peralta, Alcantra. I think Paveta would rank just the same with those two, but a little higher because you’d have them under control, you know, through the 2028 season. So, I think those are realistic conversations that are that are going on between the two teams, not necessarily that that particular one. But I think that’s a fair proposal, I would say, for for uh Paveta. >> Yeah. Todd, what about you? What do you think about what Jim is presenting here? >> Look, I like the idea of bringing Paveta. I think he’s a guy that’s been a little bit under the radar. I don’t think his name has been uh thrown around all that much until just recently when we were hearing about the uh Padre potential blockbuster. His name wasn’t really being u mentioned in that it was Mason Miller. It was maybe even a a Tatis or Machado at times. Um I like Nick Paveta. I think the one thing you think about with him, he’s a veteran guy. He’s under control. Um career year last year, but also career in he’s pitched. He’s been a workhorse. And the Mets need a guy that can burn up innings like like Paveta can. So, I like that. I think the the um proposal with a Sprro plus maybe a Jet Williams, something like that is a lot for the Mets to consider to give up uh for one arm. But I do think right now that trade market is very, very high. There’s a lot of things being asked in that trade market because they know that’s where people are going to shop right now, especially people like David Sterns and the Mets. Jim, I love you. I hate your trade proposal. [laughter] I really do. Here’s why. Because to me, Paveet is coming off. >> You love prospects. I I do. >> Just hug them. I look, I’m all for trading prospects. I really am. But it’s got to be that number one ace type guy. And I’m not sure Paveta is that. It feels like buying high off of a career year. It feels like not giving Brandon Sprout a chance when he has already proven successful in the major leagues. So for me, if I’m going to deal Brandon Sprro or Jet Williams, you’re talking about some of the best prospects in this organization. I want to get back a Tyreek Scubble type. I want to get back a Sandy Alcantra type. Like that’s what I want in return because that’s going to move the needle for me for this rotation. I I just don’t necessarily believe in Paveta, especially now as he gets into his mid-30s. Talk about having him under team control, but you’re talking about his age 34 season, his age 35 season. Like it it starts to get a little sketchy for me. So, while I like Paveta as a pitcher in the right context, I just don’t think giving up that much for that type of pitcher is the right move because it hamstrings what else you could potentially do in dealing these prospects this winter. >> One of the names I wanted to see in that trade proposal was Mason Miller, who could be the best reliever in all of baseball, but his name is not in there. >> Well, you know, I mean, part of the problem with that is the Padres’s wanting, Carson Benj. So any of these type of deals, you know, to to Anony’s, you know, conversation like Scooble, you’re not giving up the these aren’t top prospects for the other teams, for the good players that we’re talking about in the sport, you’re going to give up. You’re number one, you’re number two, you’re probably number six for TKO, you know, and and so in Mason Miller, I know for sure from talking to the Padres’s that that Benj is in the conversation and they wouldn’t even consider it without Carson Benj and maybe something else. So again, part of this what we talked about earlier, the price tag is extremely high on the trading front. I don’t expect, you know, that price to come down all that much, but with the Padres’s, it might because they do have a money crunch. So, I think you just got to sit there and be patient.
On Mets Hot Stove, Gary Apple, Jim Duquette, Anthony DiComo and Todd Zeile talk about a possible trade adding Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta to the Mets starting rotation, what the deal would cost, and whether or not Pivetta can repeat the success he had in the 2025 season.

lol hell no to that trade tha package can get u an ace or close to an ace Pivetta would be a number 3 not an ace
This is the same guy who traded Kazmir for Zombrano. Imagine if we had Kazmir in 2006
Keep Brandon sprot
He’s not even that good 😊 but ok 👍🏼
Don't do it!! Pivetta is not worth three prospects
Pivetta can opt out after 2026. You do not have 3 years of control. Would be nice if Duquette knew what he was a talking about.
Two top 100s plus for Pivetta? No way. Throw in Estrada, then maybe and i still don’t like it.
I have a great need for need trade. Make a deal with the Guardians for righthander Tanner Bibbie. He's got at least two years of team control and although he's coming off of a bad season, the previous two were great so it's probably just an outlier. The Guardians have arguably the worst offense in baseball. A deal that includes Mark Vientos and prospects could work.
Again, the Mets are going after older pitchers and giving up the farm. Why would you give up high-potential prospects for a 30-something-year-old pitcher? Go after Skubal or someone like him if you have to give up some prospects. Detroit must want more than the Mets are willing to give.
If you wonder why Douqutte isn't a GM? Here's a perfect example 😂😂
Way to much 😂 lol gtfo
I’d rather keep Sproat tbh, don’t make sense to give up a starter… for a starter (esp sproat bc he’s probably MLB ready)
Jim is a complete joke that he would even mention Jett Williams in a trade for a number 3 is embarrassing!!!
There's a reason Jim isn't a GM anymore
Padres need starting pitching. You are giving them only 1 starter and he's barely played in the majors.
BTW Pivetta has an opt out unfortunately Jim is a dimwit who traded Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano
He doesnt have 3 years of control left he really only has one, there are player opt outs after 2026 and 2027 which he will clearly exercise if he does anything close to what he did in 2025. This whole segment is null and void when you consider these facts.
Are you on drugs dude I’m not giving up all that for Nick Pivetta a one year deal😂 you don’t have him under control. He has an opt out. No dude he’s not prospect hugging he’s not gutting the farm for a number 2-3 I
Mean u gave up 3 top 100 prospects for nick according to just baseball and Jett Williams is the top 50 prospect what are you talking about Dude? That’s not a top prospect🤦🏼♂️
They're nuts to trade that for a #4 starter
Remember Jim Duquette is the clown who traded Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano.
Thank God he is not the mets GM, what a fool
Sny needs to call Duquette in to have his head examined.
Does Duquette not realize that Pivetta's contract is virtually a one year deal? He makes $19m in 2026, and has a player option for 2027 for $14m. He's going to opt out. Not to mention the only control the team has is if Pivetta gets hurt and misses 130 consecutive days between 2025 & 2026. Then the team can excise the $14m option for 2027.
Nah dude. If Mason Miller isn't in the deal hard pass.
It would take to much and wouldn't get us into competing seriously territory. At this point, keep all the kids while they're cheap, because the Mets are cheap bastards, then watch them walk in free agency because you don't want to pay anyone. It is what it is
That's ridiculous – you don't have him under control!! He can opt out – and he will because his uption is for $6.5 million LESS than what he'll make in 2026. So unless he gets hurt or is terrible he will opt out. So he's a rental. Sproat, Williams, and more for a rental? When the lineup isn't close to championship caliber. That's insane
Am with agreement with the last guy
Does Duquette work for the Padres? I'm confused. This would be a disaster of a trade for the Mets. Pivetta's only good season was last year….
Utterly embarrassing
No way! He is so overrated
