Why No One Gives Matt Burke Credit for the Texans Defense

When the Houston Texans defense dominates, the credit usually goes to the stars — Will Anderson Jr., Derek Stingley Jr., Jimmie Ward, Jalen Pitre — but is that the full story?
In this conversation, we argue that if a coach is responsible for a unit when things go wrong, they should also get credit when things go right — and that means defensive coordinator Matt Burke deserves far more recognition for what the Texans are doing defensively.
We break down why Burke’s approach works:
Winning with coverage discipline instead of constant blitzing
Getting pressure with four-man rushes while keeping seven in coverage
Understanding offensive tendencies and deploying the right coverages
Trusting his players instead of over-scheming
Letting elite defenders “hunt” rather than getting cute
While offensive struggles often get blamed on play-calling, elite defensive execution is frequently chalked up to individual talent. This discussion flips that narrative and explains why scheme, simplicity, and trust are fueling Houston’s defensive success.
The Texans aren’t surviving on exotic blitzes or gimmicks — they’re winning with clarity, alignment, and confidence, and Matt Burke is a major reason why.
If you’ve wondered why Houston’s defense looks fast, disciplined, and sustainable — this is the answer.

  1. Stop da cap Ryan’s built this Defense. Matt got good play calls but the defense was here before him. That’s like when mofo tried to give Steve Kerr the credit for the Warriors when Mark Jackson built that team

  2. Matt Burke is great at his job! Let him keep getting better with his personnel the more time he has with the talent we have the better they will play together. He is our best D Coordinator since Wade Phillips.

  3. Lets be Honest this is demeco scheme not Matt. Ryans been preaching doing this since he's got to Houston so lets be real Demeco Defense is awsome and Burke no disrespect and not take anything from him is keeping things in place not trying to fix anything that isn't broke

  4. That’s an amazing take and I agree! Putting players in the best position to succeed is the most important part. This is why Mike Tomlin has had so many winning seasons. Matt Burke learned a lot from Demeco before taking over play calling. It’s going to be hard to keep him as just a DC in a few years.

  5. I mean, it shows no skill. The defense relies almost completely on its talent. Which is fine, its just not some kind of profound display of greatness from a DC to showcase a bunch of elite players..
