Robertson’s 3-Point Night Leads Stars To 8-3 Rout Of Ducks | DLLS STARS POSTGAME
Well, well, well. What a way to start Stars After Dark. That was nuts. Stars win eight to3. A thrashing of the Anaheim Ducks as they win their fifth straight second game of a back-to- back with travel. They sweep a two-game set in California. San Jose last night, Anaheim tonight. Every time you think there might be a scheduled loss or a tough one, the stars come up and surprise us again. And still that blown lead at Madison Square Garden is the only dropped point in five backto-backs, first or second games of the set so far this year. Still have seven to go, but how about that? This is the DLS Stars postgame show. We have the He was being chirped for wearing Ducks colors in the pregame show, but the Miami Hurricanes fan Sam Nestler. We have Craig Lewig. I’m Owen Newkerk. Ryan Va is our producer. I cannot figure out how to fake this because I have a clip. I have audio, but if I play it, I think I will end up creating a feedback loop. And Ryan won’t like that very much. I was alerted by Brock of our Diehard fans that deep into overtime last night. I was asking Shawn then Luds, then Sam. And Sam, I’m not picking on you. It’s just funny because and I’m going to I’m have to read this because I can’t play the audio, right? But this is fun. So Brock sent me a thing and said, “Oh my goodness, don’t let it be lost.” Last night, one of Shawn or Sams, it turned out to be Sam, said, and I quote, “I think Dallas needs to make this game sloppy.” Talking about tonight’s game in Anaheim, not sloppy, but a sluggish and not a lot of shots. If they don’t, it’s not going to go their way. I think tomorrow they come out I Excuse me. I don’t think tomorrow they come out and put up five goals. Sam, I’m not picking on you, I promise. But one of our dieards messaged me on DMs and I just thought I’d have to bring that up because I completely agreed with you. They’re not going to score eight, let alone five. That’s weird. They’re not going to score five, let alone eight. And they scored eight. This is >> Was I wrong? >> They didn’t score five. >> Oh, perfect. >> So, you were not technically wrong. And you also said I don’t think you didn’t say they aren’t. So, >> I give myself an escape hatch. >> You gave yourself a little leeway. And Brock just asked me to make sure that >> I threw that at you. So, >> you know, you know someone though that did think that they could score in the neighborhood of eight. >> Who? >> The head coach of the opponent, >> Joel Quenville, tonight pregame. We played him. >> We should. >> They’re a really good team. Um, I think they’re they’re outstanding on their special teams, high-end skill. Um, and uh, and they can make plays uh, not just on the on the power play or penalty killing situation, but they’re uh, you know, they’ve got some guys that are high-end players that we got to be aware of and, uh, try to neutralize that as best we can. But, uh, we got to we got to look to win that uh, special team battle. >> Don Luds, enlighten us. Ryan, can we enlighten him? Is there a way to enlighten him? Do we have another shot or No, I don’t know if we have >> They’re planning something here, Sam. >> Well, I don’t think I maybe I don’t know. Ryan never talks to us, so I don’t know if he >> I get so nervous during the post game when it’s on on it StreamYard because I don’t know what you guys are up to. Like things just pop up. >> By the way, I want to add one other thing that uh our dieh hard Brock sent me. Uh, and remember this is the Do you guys remember when the Edmonton Oilers were in town in early November and some diehards uh found him found the Oilers and Gully at Moxy’s inh in Uptown? >> Well, this is the same guy. Remember they were all like 69 towering over Conor McDavid with the photo. >> Well, he I said, I don’t know if it’s going to happen if we’ll get the clip. It’s a little late before we go live. and he goes quote unquote the shaft can do it. >> Just trying to remember why that’s funny. Oh, there he got it. He got it. >> I got it. Yeah. The shaft. >> Oh, man. How about that? Do you like Is is that a totally stars after dark appropriate nickname for Ryan? Is the sha That sounds really dirty. Um, well, listen. So, you know what’s what’s funny about this game? I mean, it’s not funny. I They come out and they do what they always do, I guess. But they’re um what’s nice is a guy like Thomas Harley was plus five >> tonight. I mean, that that’s a home run. >> Yeah. And then I don’t think there were more than three players that actually had more than uh Robo had four shots and a couple other players had three. That was it. Everybody >> Ernie >> and that’s it. >> Robo had four. Harley and Ernie had three. That’s it. >> And everybody and only one player had more than two points. Oh, there’s my last one. >> Is that Professor Quenville? >> Yes. I think he he nailed it in the uh in the pregame. She I >> You mentioned Harley was plus five tonight. >> I did that all by myself. I just want you to know that. >> That’s amazing. >> Do you recall, Luds, what Harley’s plus minus was going into tonight’s game? >> Uh I wanted to say he was at one or two. >> No, he couldn’t have been. So, he had to be at he was even then >> for the season. Thomas Harley 23 games 10. So he just put cut that in half tonight. >> Wow. I didn’t realize he was that bad. >> Um >> he was the clubhouse leader amongst active players. I I Sam Steel came in tonight at minus nine. And since we’re having a little fun here, he’s plus one. So he’s he’s minus eight. It’s too bad for Thomas though because uh tomorrow is a Saturday. So that means on the NHL Network, he won’t be able to get on Gorge Stell’s party bus. Oh, >> anybody that’s more than I think it’s four or something like that. There’s a little party bus and >> but will that carry over to Monday >> with that? I don’t know if they’ll if >> I don’t know if they’re going to go over all games Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Probably >> your homework assignment since you listen to him a lot. And he has you on, right? >> Yeah. >> Message Gourd and say, “Make sure on Monday you give Thomas Harley some plus five love.” >> I probably should. I should. and he’ll listen to you for sure because everyone listens to Don Luds. >> Yeah, we’ll have to we’ll have you’re gonna have to remind me that. So, I’ll have I’ll have to do that because none of those guys are on on the weekend. >> I’m lucky I got you that weekend is the guy that you got on the show. The little uh the little guy likes to have a few beers every once in a while. >> Okay. You’re not talking about >> the He does the Sunday show. What I’m saying? >> Oh, you’re talking about Boomer. >> Oh, no, no, no, no. Oh, no. The hat. Uh, you’re talking about uh Dave McCarthy. Dave >> McCarthy. >> McCarthy. Yeah. >> Yeah. >> Anyway, >> no, but this was I you know what here here’s here’s a I don’t know if you guys pay I started doing this in the first period and I just wanted to watch I wasn’t sure how the game was going to go. Do you find that again Casey’s been so good this year. Do you find there’s a lot of pucks laying around Casey after the initial shot? >> Always. He’s It’s like nothing seems to stick to them. Like I know that two or three goals tonight. Well, they had three, so there was two for sure. And their their their last goal, which Ryan didn’t have time to put it on there, it was a tough one for him. I don’t I don’t The puck the puck was in the net and Casey had just gotten to the middle of the net from when it went from his left to right on that pass across. the puck was in the net and Casey got just to the middle of the net and the puck was going in. So, he must have not read the pass or didn’t see the pass come across anyway, but he he was good when he needed to be, right? I mean, I’m not beating down on him, but it I guess I guess the whole thing is like he’s able to not corral those pucks and then he just has to make a couple more saves and he usually does, you know. So, >> yeah, that’s fair. I mean, Sam, I think that Jakeer’s puck uh rebound control is so good that it it’s it kind of makes Casey look I mean, in contrast, right? >> Yeah. Yeah. This the size is a big one. We talked about it before. Casey has to move a lot more than Jake does. Uh you watch the footwork of Casey versus Jake. It’s totally different style of playing. So, a lot of times he’s later getting to a shot or he has to get there with a stretch or a movement that Jake would have just been able to absorb. I think that’s the big thing. Um, but Luds, I’m sure you you like it sometimes at least better than it was. It feels like they’re clearing those >> spa pucks out a little better where it’s not two on 0 in tight when there is a rebound. I know they did score the one or two goals, but more often than not, it’s a lot better than it has been. >> Well, that’s because they’re in the same zip code as the as the goalender is. I think blue line. >> Yeah. >> What do you guys think is the bigger storyline tonight? The fact that on the second night of a back-to-back with travel, they put up eight, technically nine with one disallowed, or that they held the Ducks to three on only 26 shots on goal. That was probably not good for the camera, was it? >> Figure out what I was looking at. >> What the hell was that? >> That was the back of my notepad. Oops. for me the three goals and and the the number of high danger quality things which there were a few but because again neither one of those goalenders at the other end of the rink were very good today >> I mean they just they just weren’t so >> hey check out the Matt’s comment from uh just a moment ago in the chat is to Jake what Hudobin was to Bishop that’s a pretty good comparison right stylistically of the type of goalie the size they are and then the style of play they play as far as, you know, Bishop was really good at using his size and his his angles. He didn’t have to move as much as Hudobin did. Hudobin had to be a little bit more more improvised and unorthodox. And of course, you know, when Bishop was on, it stuck to him and didn’t go anywhere. And and Jake’s look, Jake, Bishop was a mentor for for Jake and he clearly tried to learn what he could from him because they are similar in size. they play that and Bishop is night and day a better puck handler. He’s one of the best I’ve ever seen, which is amazing. You have both Turo and Bishop is part of your franchise history. But I think that’s a pretty good comparison of those ones. >> Yeah, I’d say Hugh Dobin to me was more of a battler. Yes. And I think Casey is a scrambler. You know, he scrambles to to find the pucks after they hit him. So, I I just I think that Casey does a lot of a lot of scrambling, a lot of work, a lot of east to west, and you know, but for the most part, he gets there. I there there’s no there’s no negatives about it. Does it really matter how many pucks hit you and you don’t catch them? As long as they don’t go across that goal line, that that’s really all that matters. When the Stars get ready to play the Maple Leafs on Sunday, will this be what the head coach likes to say the the the hardest one, the I mean, I know we’re jumping ahead. We’re going to break this all down, but before we get to that, you know, the goals and all the I mean, it’s it’s going to be chaos. Is is Gullison always says just like Hitch third game and four is is the hardest one, not the backtoback. Is that going to be the they with with the travel going to the the the West Coast and then two hours back and playing Sunday against the Leafs? Is that going to be the one that the Stars are going to have to find the energy? >> Well, the tough part about it is that it’s it’s three or four and then they have four and six, right? I think they play >> because they play in Detroit on Tuesday. >> Not even the end of the run. And the other side of it is Toronto wins every time they come to Dallas. Doesn’t matter what the team is like. Doesn’t matter who’s injured. I feel like Austin Matthews scores a huge goal and Toronto wins in Dallas. Yeah. So, that will be a big game, especially because man has Toronto been awful. >> I mean, they are they’re a totally different team >> than before. >> That’s right there. You nailed it. They’re they’re if you’re going to they they’ve been road hard la last last few days and they got ripped by their head coach and and they’re they’re playing awful. They’re playing terrible. And so I I I would think that um if they’re gonna if you’re going to see anything out of them, it’s probably going to be in the first five to six, seven minutes of the hockey game. And I think that that’s the part that Dallas has to be ready. But then as the game will move along, I I think you’re you’re going to see all the holes that will pop out um from Toronto right now because they’re, you know, they’re they’re at the point already where they’re talking about, you know, firing the coach and all this other kind of stuff, which is not >> this this is just his second year, right, Luds? >> Yeah. Yeah. It’s not I mean he they he would the other night two games ago he was running up and down the bench and and I don’t remember there wasn’t much left in the first period but he was running up and down and screaming at every player telling them that you guys only have one shot. You have only have one shot on the board right now. So they’re they’re they’re searching he’s searching along with his other guys are searching for those buttons to push to get that that team going. And again, you know, sometimes when you’re going into a city with a team that that is just rolling over teams, that should scare you enough to get you scare you straight because if if we don’t play our game, it’s going to be a game like tonight. If that’s Toronto coming in with that that kind of sense of urgency. >> All right, let’s get to the breakdown. This might take an hour and a half. It’s not. We’re gonna find a way to not go 90 minutes on this one, but but we’ve got to get through an hour, so we might as well talk about the goals and lots of them. All right, before we get into the breakdown, Sam, if you’re going to uh name me as a drinking game, you have to participate in said. So, let’s talk about the star. Get that drink, Sam. Let’s go. I’m just kidding. All right, let’s talk about this one tonight. Haha, I got it again. That’s two, Sam. >> All right. Jeez, I’m wasted. >> I know already. There were a glut of goals in the very beginning of this one tonight. And it started with what we all had on our bingo cards because apparently in today’s day and age, we’re all playing bingo all the time. No shade to bingo. Oscar Beck scoring a short-handed goal. And yet he did on a phenomenal play by Radic Foxa. Oh, >> I don’t know if that was all Fox. Esto style like I don’t think he I don’t think the goalender here even knew that Foxa was coming because ultimately it was like it surprised him that Foxa was coming and when Trouba comes behind the back of the net he actually runs into his goalender. He I I don’t understand what the goalender was doing and then Trouba gave him a little glass but then after that it was a great pass. You know Foxa finds a way to grab the puck and throws it right out to to Oscar and he buries it. But yeah, this one here, I didn’t get it how it this kind of tells you after the, you know, after getting yanked, he wasn’t ready for the start of the game, that goalender. >> Sam, that’s two goals in three games for Oscar Beck. He had one the rest of the year. Is this a new Oscar Beck? He can find the net. >> I don’t know. They don’t need to score a lot of goals, but they do need to put in a few, right? the the Bors, Beck, Steel, Foxes, they need to find a way to put up five to eight to 10, whoever you are talking about. So, those goals are huge. And I just love there’s a theme here. I wrote about it. The game was backward. Every time it felt like the Ducks were going to do something because they were owning the shots or they had the better chances for a grip or they’re the better team shorthanded with all the short-handed goals. Dallas gets the short-handed goal. Dallas gets the power. Everything was backward tonight, but I just love when Oscar Beck gets a goal. Hey, Luds. Is there anything you’d like to say to our fearless leader GM Ben, who in the chat a couple minutes ago said we should do an extra 15 minutes for every Stars goal tonight? >> Yeah. What? What? Don’t Don’t put your time into worrying about the breakdown of 11 goals or 10 goals tonight. Let’s just get on the hat problem. Okay. >> I knew it was going to have something to do with the hats for sure. >> Listen to this. >> You set me up. You set me up for that. >> This one, mother. Listen to this. >> My favorite drop now. >> I love it. Okay. >> That’s you. >> Oh, I only hear the beat part. >> Yeah. Well, anyway, 55 seconds later, Anaheim tied the game and it would be the only time other than at 000 at 1-1 that the game was also level. >> Well, this is one of those I was talking about with Casey. I mean, the shot comes in from the point. I you know and again there may have been somebody in in his you know in his eyes coming through here. There is a little bit of traffic but it hits Casey in the left pad and it just bounces out in front. I don’t I don’t like the rest of of of what Petro does. I I think Petro had to play him a little bit better in front of the net. He he allows Palin to come out of the corner and doesn’t really do enough to to deter him and there’s just too much time and space for him to come to the front of the net. But then there’s a there’s a puck that hits Casey in the in the pad and it it just lays right there for him. And it’s right after this one right here. Pops out, kicks it with escape. Petro doesn’t do much. Done. It’s a nice play by Paling to use his feet there. >> Yeah, but but you know, I mean, look at the space that that he has to come through the goalender and Petro. There’s too much room here. But there’s that loose puck there. >> Gez, that’s a dangerous one. >> I know that that doesn’t look I know it’s a quick play, but you see the blade in the air, right? >> Fortunately, there were no injuries on the play. All right, 50 seconds later, Roe hints from the high slot. Decent shot, but how about that pass, Sam, from Jason Robertson? Yeah, the uh so Robertson was one that was funny for me tonight because I immediately started writing my article and thinking tonight we’re going to talk about Jason Robertson and it’s not going to be in a good way. It’s going to be he struggled. He took the early penalty. It was kind of a lazy play. Stopped his feet. Uh he’s on the wrong side of the puck a couple times. Ended up taking the other penalty in the second period. A lot of a lot of not so good, but he made an incredible pass to Hints who those those two have the chemistry they’ve developed forever. Now Johnston Ranton and Duchain are starting to get some hints and Ben mixing with Robertson. They’re starting to to find different pairs that are that are combining for good goals. But um I just love that Robertson completely turned 180 and ended up having what what Razer called a Miko Rantin type of night. >> Backhand sauce. >> Little backhand sauce never hurt. >> Yeah, it’s what it’s what good players. And again, right there, you can see Robo even before he’s coming out of that corner, he’s got his head up, so he knows exactly where he’s going. He’s know he’s aware of his surroundings and and just gives hence a nice little pass. And again, that’s another one’s looking right at I mean, again, you got to give credit, right? You give credit to the shooter, but it’s just another example for me, a goalender that wasn’t ready to go tonight. >> I mean, he had a three save percentage sleds. Oh, I I have a I have a correction on that and that’s only because you were absolutely right, Sam, until >> after the first intermission as the second period started, they added a shot. >> So, he managed he finished with three saves on seven shots for a 429 save percentage and a 16.76 goals against average. >> That’s respectable then. >> Yeah, it’s so much better than 333, right? Um, >> what do you guys think before we get to the next goal about as you saw in that play, Maverick Bourke playing to at least to the start, I can’t remember if he finished on that line, but playing with Robertson and Hint and moving Ben with Steel and Ritzkov and it kind of mixed things up. >> I think you’re looking for I think coaches are looking for a place to get Maverick going. >> Yes. >> You know, I think they’re >> Yep. They’re and and these are good games for that because you can maneuver guys around. Let’s find Let’s find a way to get them a spark. I I that’s what I think they’re trying to do and good on them for trying to do it. All right, let’s go to the third goal because it’s our man of steel who crashed into the steel and actually got what we determined was an awarded goal because it would have gone in anyway if the net wasn’t knocked off. This is called paying the price to score a goal. >> I mean, did that look bad? >> He’s he’s very fortunate that nothing worse happened to him going in there, you know. >> Indeed. >> Uh I think he was able to get his head out of the way at the last second and catch more of the brunt. It wasn’t on the shoulder. >> I thought left hand >> Well, I think his his body goes into it just just right there. Right. It’s like the collar bone. Yeah, >> that’s his glove right on the post there. That left hand bending his wrist back >> kissing iron. >> Yeah, he was really fortunate. Gets the goal, however, and as you said, Luds, pay the price. They uh they actually reviewed I think the net was technically off the mooring before the puck crossed the goal line, but because it was not an a, you know, he was basically he crashed into it wasn’t it was going to go in anyway, right? It wasn’t as though the net came off and then he shot it through the goalie and it triggered. Anyway, so goal counts after the review. >> That that collision would have hurt a lot more. >> Yeah. >> If the puck didn’t go in the net. >> No kidding. And uh Sam, you sent us a a video on Twitter earlier than that of Seth Jarvis going to into the left post in their game tonight in for Carolina. >> No. Yeah. No penalty and no goal. And then I see that and I couldn’t help but have sort of this weird correlation of those two. >> Yeah, I mean it’s a good thing. As much as sometimes it gets annoying, you know, a goalie can bump it off pretty easily. It’s a real good thing. And the reason they made those posts come off the borings as easy as they do because you used to LS knows you you go head first in those things when they weren’t when they were freaking drilled in there. You felt the brunt of that and that net maybe lifted up but it did not. It wasn’t on those bendy moorings they have. It was those big metal ones and they weren’t moving at all. So, it’s a good thing. >> I’m not trying to call you old, but did you ever play when the posts were in the ice or was it always the pegs or the now rubber moorings? >> I think they were in the ice >> cuz that when they can’t move at all, that’s the most dangerous. >> Yeah. No, it didn’t. >> That’s crazy. That’s insane. All right. Uh, minute 38 after the Sam Steel goal. >> Hey, Thomas Harley. four one star. >> I said, “Hi, Thomas Harley.” >> Oh, because I wrote down immediately. I said, “That’s the Harley we know right there. >> I know that guy. >> That’s him. You know what?” And it’s it started in the neutral zone because he he read a pass. He steps up just outside of his own blue line in the neutral zone. Picks the puck off and, you know, advances it, gets it back, and then he rips it. And again, this one here, I I don’t know. Again, the puck is on the defenseman who’s ever trying to go down and block it, I think sees that shot. Um, but again, we got that look of Brandon and he just seems to have eyes in the back of his head and in his ears and everywhere else. It’s that tight little turn and he knows that exactly when Harley’s coming and it doesn’t stay on his stick long and puts it again. I I I’m waiting for the one time I can say I think I just saw Ranton and passed to somebody and went into their skate because generally it’s on the tape all the time. >> What are you going to do if that happens? Leds >> I’m gonna call him mortal mortal shirt. >> He’s a superhero. >> He’s talking about Dostall. I mean, this was one, as you’re seeing here, they they pull him after this. He was 425, I think, is what you just said, Owen. Um, but this is one a rare game where this goal is not seeing the puck. Like there’s there’s a clear there’s not playing well and there’s just not seeing the puck and reading the play. He wasn’t seeing it at all. But it was a rare one where then they put in Razic and he was just as bad. And not not just as bad in the sense that they were just dominating and getting a ton of shots and his stats looked bad. He also wasn’t seeing the puck. some of the goals he allows, he almost gets out of the way of the shot. So, this was the Stars got every gift possible. They they scored the goals, but they had two goalies that really really struggled to see the puck tonight. >> Yep. >> I want to read a quick quote postgame from Rad Gutas, the captain of the Ducks. And I know I rail sometimes when the Stars have a bad game at home and it doesn’t feel like some of the leadership are the ones that are interviewed postgame. So, kudos to Gutas for speaking after they got absolutely curbtopped. quote, “That’s one of the best teams in the league, and we just let them just play their game. We weren’t making it hard for them to get pucks through, and we screened our own goalie, so it was very hard today for the attendees.” >> Yep. >> That’s what he should say. >> Well said. >> Yep. All right. So, Morazzic in that’s it. A four goal on originally it was six shots. They added one, so it was seven in the first period. Then we go to the second period and I know they’re up three. Casey to Smith on a replay. I thought McTavish on the opening power play of the second period for the Ducks missed the net. They set up a little triangle play, but when you saw the replay, Casey got a blocker on that. Just a little bit of the outside of his blocker. That was a really good save. And then Jason Robertson a little bit later, power play goal. I said on Twitter, stick handling in a phone booth. This was high-end skill with no space. >> Yeah, I don’t think the goalender was expecting him to stop and come back the other direction. But, you know, we were talking in the pregame show that this is where, you know, guys got to go if if they want to get back on that streak and and Robo understands that. He goes to the front of the net and um there’s nobody around him and he’s got enough time and space here. And it was the little play where he gets it and then he ultimately because I I believe it it got to Morazzic once he picks up the rebound and then it and then it’s that little move on his backhand. And again I I just sometimes I wonder what the opponent the defenseman and people in front are doing. I I don’t understand. And you can just look at everybody’s head. They’re all staring at the puck instead of why don’t you just run him over? It makes no sense to me. But but again, Robo’s a big he’s a big kid and but yeah, he’s got that that poise and that patience and um I I think Duchain’s waiting for me to pass it to him right here or something. >> No, it’s been a while since I’ve scored a goal. I just want to do it myself. >> I don’t think a twoon with Duchain Robertson on your goalie is the best uh penalty killing in the world. >> Robertson makes it five to one. The Ducks get another power play and Des Smith Stones Chris Krider right at the crease. Point blank. Leo Carlson put the second effort wide to the right and shortly after the power play ended, we have more Jason Robertson filth. >> Nice little backhand, wasn’t it? >> Jeez, >> how about that tow drag? But when you, you know, again, I I just look at the opponents and when you got a guy like that, everybody’s staring at the puck and, you know, he he pulls it and he’s got that big long reach and and somehow he’s in enough that he’s got it all the way out. He seems to be as extended as far as he can go onto his backhand and he still has enough to be able to get get enough on it and get it underneath the bar and Morazzic just isn’t able to recover there. But I I I just look at the couple guys and they’re staring at pucks and they’re reaching and uh Robo, it’s funny. It’s it’s just things slow down for people in those areas and and I just think the one thing I I did write down, I didn’t even write about the goal is what confidence is a funny thing. And I just think that, >> you know, if he doesn’t get that first goal, what does he do with that one? Does he do the same thing? But now he, you know, he’s got so-called monkey off his back a little bit and I think he feels good about where he’s at and he’s able to pull it and I’m going to take a half a stride and just get past a a long reached out stick and get it to my backand and I got the confidence and you know it’s one of his one of his shootout moves too. >> All right, we have a break to hit and then we have lots more goals to talk about. 83 we are at 61 still in the second period on the DLS Stars postgame show. Let’s continue our breakdown of the DLS Stars postgame show after the Stars beat the Anaheim Ducks 8 to3. Welcome back, Adam Ernie. Boy, all sorts of good feels tonight. You’ve get the Harley goal for the first time in a while. In fact, Thomas Harley hadn’t scored a goal. Should I just hold my notes right in front of the camera like I did earlier? That was a really good TV moment. Harley hadn’t scored since October 11th at Colorado. That was the second game of the season. So, he snapped a 21game goal drought. Adam Ernie hasn’t scored since he went on the shelf. And so, that was big for him. And this goal is kind of sort of the epitome of the Adam Ernie game. Being able to protect the puck, go to the net and have some hands. >> Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you know, again, he’s a big body. He understands where he’s supposed to go when even when this puck was he was coming out from behind the net and the puck gets up to the point, he doesn’t go anywhere else. He just makes a U-turn and goes right back to the front of the net and he gets rewarded for it. And, you know, nice play by Harley. uh has this head up. He’s trying to make a pass here to Fox and it just completely blows up off of Fox. But fortunately, Ernie, you know, Ernie’s in a position where he can just grab it and turn around on his forehand. And again, you got a goalender that seems to I don’t know, they they can’t see where it was going. But, um, you know, good on Ernie, right? I just he’s in that spot. He’s got position on the defenseman. He protects the puck and then all in one motion he just turns around and basically hits a empty 4×6. >> Led, as you look at that again, what’s Ian Moore, the defenseman’s mistake there when he tries to defend Ernie in the slot? >> Well, I I don’t know what he was doing originally. You know what I’m saying? Like, and again, I think that in his defense that that where the original pass was a shot shot pass from Harley to Fox, he would be in the right spot. But when it blows up off of his stick and goes to the right of him, you know, probably another three to four feet. Now, all of a sudden, Ernie is the one that ultimately, see right here, he’s got his stick where he’s supposed to have it. If this puck is going to come through here, he’s going to lift Ernie’s stick up. It’s the right way to be. It’s the right position. But once it blows up on him, now all of a sudden, you know, now it’s it it’s Ernie that’s got position because he’s able to turn his body and he’s got his backside. And there there’s nothing the defenseman can do that, you know. Got to give uh Ernie credit. He had a great game. Three scoring chances, scores the goal. >> They’re up seven to one after two periods of play. They are the first team, according to the NHL stats to score in the league this year, seven goals through the first 40 minutes through the first two periods. No other team had seven through two this season. So, that’s nice. I can’t imagine Adam Ernie comes out of the lineup for Sunday’s game against Toronto, right Sam? No. And I was just thinking when when Ernie scored that goal, I mean the goal is is the biggest part obviously, but he did have a really good game is you look at guys like Bourke and I root for Bour so I don’t mean to pick on him, but like the guy has to score goals. He has to find a way to score goals. He only has one more goal than Adam Ernie and he’s played like 20 more games. That that’s the kind of pressure that’s being put on guys like Bourke because they have higher expectations. Ernie doesn’t need to score to stay in the lineup. But if he can put in seven, eight goals and he’s the not the the high, you know, potential guy like Bourke who was the the first round pick and has all that on him, that puts pressure on guys like Bourke. That puts pressure, maybe not as much steel, but the the other guys that are around him now um that aren’t finding a way to add a goal here and there when they need it, it’s huge for Adam Ernie. I don’t I think he stays in and I don’t know even know maybe they stay with the same lineup. >> Same lineup. I wondered maybe just one more game for Blackwell. I mean, Blackwell’s been great. There’s no reason not to except that Ernie’s found a way to score some goals. Now, Blackwell has a couple as well. I mean, I think for the season he has Yeah, he has two goals, >> five assists in 34 games. Ernie now has three goals in 15 games. He’s finding a way to get a few more pucks in the net. And that, you’re right, it’s not the only thing of a of a player in the third or fourth line role. But if you can do all the things that Ernie does and add a few goals, that is exceptionally valuable. >> Well, and he plays to his identity. I mean, he’s the guy that plays the least amount of minutes tonight. He plays about 11 minutes. He’s the only guy that’s got three shots and three hits. You know, he led the team. I know it’s not a lot, but but again, he knows who he is. It’s his identity and and he understands he’s been around for a while. You know, he’s been in all different places and he wants to stay in this place and he knows what he has to do to stay here. Led’s the team was only tracked for eight hits tonight. He had three of them. >> That’s pretty high percentage. >> They had the puck quite a bit. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. They didn’t have to go chasing a whole lot. All right. So, after two, they’re up seven to one. Early in the third period, and this is very quick, just 61 seconds in, Becket Senaki, who’s I’ll tell you what, he’s a heck of a player. He’s very entertaining to watch. He scores on an entry one-time top of the left circle. It’s a great play. Typically, Sam, I wouldn’t necessarily say that’s one I’m happy my goalie allowed, >> but it’s seven to two and whatever. >> The Smith was a little bit asleep at the wheel on that one. He just didn’t read it. Uh he doesn’t get over. He looks like he’s surprised by the fact that Senica Senica shoots it. I don’t know if he’s just thinking it’s going to be a pass and they’re going to settle into a rush or what, but he he barely gets over there and then by the time he is, it’s he has a great shot. That’s that might have also surprised Casey a little bit is that, you know, he doesn’t know who this guy is that that I think he has 11 goals now because he can surprise goalies right now with how quick he gets it off. But I think Casey maybe fell into the seven to two or whatever lol at that point, which is who blames him? >> Very understandable. >> I don’t think I don’t Sam I don’t think he sees the pass. >> Yeah. you know, be because because Essa’s kind of in in Casey’s vision a little bit, but literally when by the time that puck is on his stick on the other side of the ice, Casey is just starting to move to his right. And by the time he releases it and the puck gets to somewhere around basically right near the crease area, he’s just getting to the middle of the net. There’s no way to me Casey’s that slow. I just don’t think that he read the pass or he agree >> because I think when the who who made the pass again who made the pass across >> uh I think it was McTavish I think >> is that who it was okay I I he was >> it was okay I thought it was >> and McTavish is a lefty isn’t he? >> Yes. >> Yes. >> Yeah. See when he comes in on the off side there and Essa’s playing in the middle of the ice that’s basically where the puck is. So, I think that Casey’s vision is taken away by Essa and he can’t see him initiate that pass. And by the time it gets across because it was a perfect pass. I mean, it was a bullet that gets across and then Senaki or whatever you’re calling him, it he hits it right away. So, >> 41 seconds later, let’s celebrate because the longest goal drought on the roster right now is over. Ilia Leouchkin had a 45game goal drought. I’ve been tracking this one for a while. His last goal March 4th against the New Jersey Devils. This was last year, but technically >> beauty. >> He only scores beautiful goals. This one was a snipe. >> This was like a celibbrini goal. >> Yeah. >> Right. >> I mean, the the confidence to even shoot it. I don’t know if it’s because it’s seven to two or seven to three or uh whatever, but he’s not close. It’s not like he’s at the bottom of that circle right there and can kind of chip it over the shoulder. He shoots that from almost the outside of the right circle and he has just about the size of a p. I mean, that is a great angle right there. Just about the size of a puck to put that and he puts it right there. Again, >> you should want a car for that shot. Yeah, Morazzic does a good job of making himself skinny and not covering the net properly, but it’s just such a great shot and I love that it’s Luchkin of all the players on his team. >> Do you guys remember when Vern Fiddler scored a goal from about that angle >> and >> and he said, “I just closed my eyes and flung it toward the net and it went in.” Well, I think we because of the level of the top players in the NHL, right? The Robertsons, the Rantinins, etc. We we look down on the guys that aren’t the skill guys, the offensive leaders. They’re still incredibly talented hockey players. There’s just different levels at the most elite level in the world. >> Well, what basically what what they need is they need more space and time. You know what I mean? Like they they can’t do the same things that the top guys can in the tight areas and they can’t it just things are slower. It’s slower getting from your head to your hands and your eyes and everything else. And you know, these other guys are just they’re just special players that are able to get that off in traffic and when you don’t have any time and space and and still be able to look up and find something when you got people trying to take the puck off your stick. >> I like how uh I love Misty just said B will manhandle the average beer. Leouchkin would manhandle the average AHL player. Beer Leaguers don’t even belong on the ice with ECHL players, let alone top six defensemen in an NHL team. Just to show like that’s the thing. When I was in the United Hockey League, which is was at the time now defunct, but it was a uh a double A level competing with the ECHL, but not with the same teams. one of the guys that I I remember skating with one of the guys who was like their 11th forward if they you know or they dressed 10 forwards. It was like three lines plus one enforcer. That guy that barely got on the ice in the ECHL would skate circles around any beer. I don’t think people realize the massive gap in talent between >> Why are you throwing Sam under the bus right now? >> Sorry, Sam. Professional hockey players of any level are so much better than beer league. I again look we have a lot of fun in beer league but pros are different. Totally different. All right. Granland scores at the top of the crease on a loose puck. Nice play. Paid the price. 83 the final. There was a rant in goal that was disallowed. He thought he made it nine. It actually hit the post. It was originally awarded and they reviewed it. We’re going to talk about Frank Vrono losing his mind and then get to the super chats next here on the DLS Stars postgame show. After a couple live reads, yeah, >> I hope I’m alive when these hats come. >> Um, let’s pull them up again, Ryan. Or I mean, Sha, there they are. They’re they’re just I can just about feel them. I can reach out. But I’m reaching out at the screen right now to grab my two hats right there. But they are beautiful hats, folks. So, uh, put your order in and, uh, when you get them, let me know what you did that I couldn’t do. Uh, because they’re probably not going to be here for Christmas, but that’s okay. And, uh, let let’s go. I want to see the mafia again. I want to see the our finished mafia. Our shirts. There we go. Take a look at these things. That’s Sam’s favorite one. Uh, and let’s look let this is for condolences to the moose. How about how about one moose look because uh he didn’t get on the board tonight as far as the goal goes. He probably did get a little bit screwed on them. But anyway, his points are >> He had two assists. >> He’s going to be fine. Yeah, he’s he didn’t quite finish that one, but uh he’s good to go. >> Hey Luds, do you think we should create a new shirt that says immortal moose? >> Please, we need some more shirts. >> But like how about an immortal? You said if he made a bad pass he would be mortal. How about immortal moose? Well, I would like to see the shirt that we could make it. It is a bad pass. We’ll just show that it was a bad pay. We’re just one time and it’s hitting somebody else and escape >> or or human after all. >> Pretty popular one. >> We can take that to your men’s league games >> because that’s the only place you guys pass through is tape to skate. >> Chip and change, luds. Chip and change. That’s Sam’s motto. >> Up the wall. >> That’s him motto, boys. Hey, you know what? While we’re talking about getting good at the wall, if you want to read articles by the DLS crew, they could maybe be talking about stuff like this dumb crap that nobody really would think you’d care about, but you probably do. We’re growing very fast and getting to know a lot of you guys. So, join now. All dealers.com. >> Thank you, Sam. Let’s talk about losing your marbles for a minute because five minutes. >> What did I miss? >> That’s Sam calling for That’s the breakout play was Sam when he played >> L’s wall. >> That’s what it was. Nobody within 30 feet of him he could get a tape to take past and then he skates to the medline and dumps it in and goes and chases it down. >> So hyped. I was so hyped. >> So jazzed. I gota I would have loved to get the live barn footage of that. >> Can you imagine? And how slow it really looks when we think it’s fast. >> It’s bad. Okay. Uh 501 into the third period. Jason Robertson has a great chance for the hattick. He’s open. Fires one. Morazzic makes the save. And Frank Vrono absolutely blows a circuit, a fuse, a few gaskets. And I think you you talk about Sam Steel dodging a bullet when he crashed into the post early in the game. I think the Stars dodged a bullet here because the two-handed overhand slash from Vrono on the left hand of Robertson could have been really badly. Just ask Mark Mthought when you lose a part of your finger because of a Sydney Crosby slash. Now, it was years ago. Let’s not relitigate. But I completely understand why Robo who got slashed and then got the little, you know, business cross check right at the back of the pants, turns and gives him the sort of no look backhand slash to the to the legs again, front of the shin pads. But then Vrono did everything. I I I almost hog tied him. Yeah. >> What was going on there? >> It slammed his head down, too. He not only tackles him, grabs his face, puts him in a bad position, but >> that’s the part I really didn’t like was the grabbing of the neck and then the driving the head into the ice. >> Flips him over and drives his head. I mean, I I understand you’re frustrated. You’re in a a lopsided game, but >> that that’s that’s bad. And the fact that it wasn’t it’s Robo, so like you’re you know, it’s not like he’s been jawing. It’s not Ritz Kovian, you know, he’s been in your ear all game or Jamie Ben or something where you just think he’s going to get punched. This is clearly a pure frustration thing. Uh the first step was frustration. Then all he needed was Robertson to look at him to freak out. Fact that Robertson gives him a a whack, he goes off. I I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get some sort of discipline for that situation. >> Like a fine at least. You think >> What do you think, Lud’s about all this nonsense? >> Well, first off, the the cross check back across just above your your hips. It’s a dangerous play because if you get him just right, your feet are going to leave you and where he’s at, he’s at that goal line. And that’s what pissed uh Robo off is because he knew what he was trying to do because I’m sure Robo felt it because your your hips kind of go out in front and your feet kind of want to go up and so he just turned around and slashed him. But here’s here’s the bottom line for me in the whole thing. They’re getting their ass kicked eight to three. That’s the point. Like that’s the point. And you know, so they’re they’re not happy. They’re getting embarrassed. And you know, I I don’t think anybody’s really going to be afraid of little Frankie, but you know what I’m saying? But it’s just a it’s a cheap it’s a cheap play from behind. And I was just looking. He’s got uh what does he got? He’s got 800 800 games maybe. Yeah. >> A long time. >> He’s got about 700 games. 600 games and he’s got 350 minutes or so in penalties. So >> he’s a goal scorer. He can put the puck in the net. Voron, >> I I just think it’s a frustrated play. It’s a frustrated player. It’s a frustrated team. Robo should have been probably at the end of the day probably should have been happy that it was Vrono and it wasn’t Radco that was doing it because >> yeah, >> you know, you’d be picking your teeth up out there. >> Yeah. I mean I to be fair though I mean I’m not trying to cast judgment on Vrono overall, just this play. I know Gudas plays hard and big hits. I don’t think he goes for dirty plays that much if I, you know, what I’ve seen. I know that there’s been a couple of questionable hits or whatever. Um, to me, and again, maybe this is just the competitive edge coming out. When I saw all that, I didn’t like it. Kind of wanted Gully to send that top power play unit out first, four-minute power play, and stick it to him. But he didn’t. Maybe because they just had a shift. Maybe because Robo was in the box, but they he put the second power play unit out. And then, as we said earlier, they did proceeded to give up a couple of short-handed chances. Go with a breakaway. Crider flubbed the twoon-one. Ranton and thought he scored. That would have been a nice sort of nine to2 like, “Okay, enough Jack Wagon behavior.” But I was really hoping that Robo would come out of the box and then score and just be like, “All right, guys, enough of that nonsense. Let’s just get out of this one.” Yeah, but I’ll tell you, you’re you you’ve got a team there that’s getting embarrassed and they could be on tilt. The last thing you want to do is send your best players out there for >> Yeah, that’s probably five, six goals and some dummyy’s going to take a little slash on your hand or on the top of the foot and you break a little bone and you’re out for three weeks. It’s It’s not worth it. >> Is that gully just being more composed than the average hockey fan? >> Yeah. Yeah. Me >> I wanted I wanted vengeance. >> I want to do it. Put put 10 on the board. >> Put Sam in there. He’ll dump it out of the zone. >> You know it. >> Okay, that’s our breakdown. A lot of goals. Eight to three. Stars win again. We’re not getting tired of it at all. But the victory and by the way, Colorado won again, so you know, wash, rinse, repeat. >> Stars are now 247 and five, 53 points. They are 132 and four on the road. Casey to Smith now has a 12game point streak, 90 and3. He has, knock on wood, hasn’t lost a game in regulation since that Vancouver game he first started in October and five just I I lost for words the superlatives of how he’s been. But let’s get to some super chats here because we’re almost out of time already and we’re not going to do what GM Ben suggested and go an extra hour and 30 minutes or whatever he wanted us to do. All right, I love Misti 1985 right off the hop as Razer likes to say at one minute into the postgame show with a Robertson and a Des Smith. That was fun. Sure, we got outshot once again. That doesn’t matter. And XG showed this was much closer than the score. It wasn’t, but boy was it nice to get revenge on Anaheim for their win at the AAC. Just said Robo’s Lady Bing Hobbes took a big hit. Sam, that was your comment. He could He had two offensive zone penalties that could have mired his entire night. >> Yeah, >> he’s he’s learning from the best. >> I love it. >> And uh I believe if did I hear on the telecast correctly, this was one of the few buildings he hadn’t scored a goal in. So he’s got two I don’t think he’d scored in Anaheim. Now he has two. So there’s only a couple left, I believe. >> Check into that. Hidalgo who last night was super negative in the chats and people were really giving Hidalgo the business for it after beating the Sharks with a Ben and a rant in. That’s the type of game they are capable of playing against any team. They lost the XG4 expected goals for a game, but they frustrated the Ducks by staying structured for the most part. Now keep it consistent. Look, you cannot expect or demand 8 to3 games all the time. buttloads, you can expect to frustrate teams if you stay in your structure. And that’s the part I think that we should be more happy about as you said off the top of the show tonight. >> Well, and and I think that you’re playing back to back and you know the schedule and all that kind of stuff and that it it’s one way to conserve some energy, you know, when and especially once you start to get the lead now, you make sure that pucks are going where they’re supposed to be. you know, like you get an opportunity to get pucks in deep, they go in deep, so there’s no counterattacks that are threequarter ice, and you make the other team chase the game. And you got you got to play smart. You know, there’s times you just play the right way. And the the whole thing for this team is they’re learning how to play with the lead and and I think to be able to manage hockey games in the right way. And obviously the goalenders are always giving them that opportunity to do that. But you can see them doing some of the little things. And even even guys like Mo. Miko’s not a guy that likes dumping pucks in, but there’s times there’s times when he understands time and score and you know there’s no reason to to press press the issue right now and let’s just make them come all the way through all of us. >> All right, let’s go to spit and chicklets a Madono and 99 cup year. Do y’all feel like Ranton is playing a little more ed on ed of an edge? I can’t read tonight. More grittiness compared to recent years, Sam. >> Oh, for sure. He looks angry. That’s the way I would describe him this year. >> We talked about this last night with Shawn. Is this the emerging out of the shadow of Nathan McKinnon to see the true colors of Rico Ranton and Sam? >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I think he he knows he can control a game in all aspects and he’s doing that. That’s all. I mean, he he drags his team into the fight when they’re not playing well. He dominates when everyone is playing well. He knows that he can control all three zones, every facet of the game, and he’s doing it. And you know, other than going over the line one or two times, he’s doing it successfully. So, I personally love it because that’s the type of player Dallas has never had. I don’t think they’d expected it from their superstar. They expected other guys to step into that role. They’ll take it from a guy who’s also scoring a lot of goals. I I I do think also um there is a burn of saddle from the way everything went down. And you know what? Like I’ll show you. You made you made a mistake. game seven wasn’t enough. >> Yeah, I’m just saying I I think that I I think he’s out to prove and and again, he’s going about it in the right way because he’s doing everything you could expect from that kind of a player. uh you know and again if he’s got a bit of an edge good you know and and I mean uh that I just think they’re they’re part of that is and again if you’re going to use that for motivation and he’s saying guys go ahead hit yourself to my wagon because I’m going to take you there and it’s awesome to see >> the Stars as I brought up earlier will play the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday at home. It’s a I believe it’s a six o’clock start central time. But before we get to that, which we’ll have our pregame show, 5:15, there were two trades in the NHL and we have about n uh 60 seconds. Philipe Deno is headed back to Montreal traded by the LA Kings for I believe a second round pick. Yep. And then >> a third and a fourth round pick go to the Seattle Kraken for Mason Marchment to the Columbus Blue Jackets. Thoughts on either one of those? >> Go ahead, Sam. >> I was surprised with the with the marchment. Not that he was moved because the way he started the season and the way they were just kind of struggling to find his fit. I had a feeling he’d be going somewhere. I just didn’t think he’d be going there. Um, Columbus obviously trying to figure some things out on their end, but the the Deno one, I was interested. As soon as his name started coming up, I was wondering if he would be a guy that would go to a contender. Um, again, I don’t know that he did. So, the two trades were two teams that I don’t even know where they’re going to end up at the end of the season, but two good players that are now most likely off the the the list for anybody in March. I I I like Deno as a player. I I thought he was a good fit in LA. You know, he’s a good centerman. He’s he’s more on the the Ge Carbono kind of side, you know, that that shutdown guy. And um and but maybe they think they have enough of those guys there. I mean, they’re that’s the way that their game is. And >> it sounded like they were looking to move on from him this year. >> That’s what I mean. I I’m surprised. >> I don’t know why. Yeah, >> I’m surprised because he seemed to fit the identity of how that team wants to play, but maybe there’s something uh that they’re, you know, going to they need some scoring. They don’t they don’t score a lot, so maybe they’re maybe that’s part of something else coming up. >> All right, fellas. We’ve touched on just about everything we could tonight as the Stars find a way to win their third in a row. Seventh of their last eighth, 121 and two in their last 15. We haven’t even hit Christmas yet. So, big thank you to everybody for joining us tonight. We always have a lot of fun. Even these stars well after darks have a normal six o’clock Sunday game. So, enjoy your Saturday. Sam, maybe go Hurricanes. >> Yes, sir. >> Oh, there it is. And we will see you >> for Stars and Leafs on Sunday, 5:15 pregame show. Luds and I will be in the podcast studio, aka as LS calls it, the closet. And Sam will be over at American Airlines Center, not wearing his one suit and tie as we get you ready for Stars and Leo wearing a new hat, >> maybe. Who can say? Huge thank you to Ryan Vers, our producer tonight. on it, Ben. >> I believe that Brock called him quote unquote the shaft tonight.
