FRIEDMAN’S LATEST TRADE UPDATE: PENGUINS FLIPPING BRETT KULAK? TRADE TO RED WINGS, BRUINS?

All right, things are starting to get spicy when it comes to very particular old defensemen that have gotten traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. And make no mistake about it, there’s only really one that we’re going to be talking about in this video, at least one that is in the trade cycle at the moment. Because today what we’re doing is talking about former Oiler and current Penguin Brett Koolak, a guy who was already suited up for two games with his new team and discussing where and if he could even get traded to. Does that make sense? No, that does not make sense. We’re going to be discussing if he can get traded again and where he could get traded to. There you go. That’s what I wanted to say. You might be thinking about this saying, “Lego, what in the world are you talking about?” Brett Koulak was just traded from Edmonton over to Pittsburgh. He’s a pretty good player. 31 years old, 6’2, 192, left-handed guy. He’s famous in Montreal, I would say, because the Montreal Canadians traded Brett Kulak over to the Edmonton Oilers for a draft pick that inevitably became Lane Hudson. So, what a great legacy for this guy. But Koulak of course has been part of two straight Stanley Cup finalist teams. Last year he had 25 points in 82 Oilers games. This year he only had two points in 31 games. He is on pace for a grand total of five. Is he better than that? Probably. But the thing is Brett Koulak is making $2.75 million a year. And it’s already been heavily reported that the entire reason Koulak was traded to Pittsburgh wasn’t because Edmonton doesn’t like this guy. It’s not that they don’t mess with him no more. It’s really just because the money going out wasn’t sufficient enough. When you just sent Steuart Skinner over to Pittsburgh, you needed to add some extra funds which is why Brett Koulak was attached in the deal. Keep in mind Tristan Jarry had no salary retained by the Penguins. So, now that Pittsburgh has this older, aging defenseman, where do we go from here? This is where we take a look at a post made on Twitter by NHL rumor report. It’s a conversation between Elliot Freriedman and Edmonton’s Bob Stoer on Oilers Now from earlier in the week before he was included in the Pittsburgh deal. I think there were some teams in on Brett Koulak. That one isn’t over. Stoer asked, “You could see Kulak getting flipped?” And Freriedman said, “Yeah, they did that last year with Luke Shen.” Now, interesting interesting piece of trivia here. Luke Shen is 36 years old, right-handed guy, 6’2,225. Also making $2.75 million a year. Yeah, the cap hits are exactly the same. Look at that. today. But Luke Shen last season started out as a Nashville Predator. And honestly, I’d say he was a reasonably good Predator as well. He went over to that team after getting eliminated in the second round with the Maple Leafs. He signed on for the PRs and made the first round against Vancouver. Was a pretty notable force there before getting sent over to Winnipeg in 2024 2025. Except no, actually he didn’t because Luke Shen was first sent over to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Michael Bunting trade on March 5th, 2025, Shen and Tommy Novak went over to Pittsburgh in exchange for Bunting and a draft pick. And then literally the very next day, 2 days later, excuse me, the Penguins traded Luke Shen over to Winnipeg for a second and a fourth. So Luke Shen was acquired in a package with Tommy Novak for Michael Bunting and then he was immediately traded for a second and a fourth from the Winnipeg Jets. This is exactly what Freriedman is talking about that Luke Shen got flipped last year. Therefore, you could assume that Brett Kulak could be flipped again this year. There was another reply saying, “Hey, I thought Shen was flipped because he asked if the Penguins if they could move him to a team that was going to be in the playoffs. the Pens actually wanted to keep Shen. I mean, for Brett Koulak, you could assume that maybe the same argument could apply here. The guy is 31 years old and he’s coming off of back-to-back Stanley Finals series. I don’t think he would be happy staying in a team like Pittsburgh over the next few months. His contract does expire at the end of the year, too. So, he could be prime rental material here, which is why I wanted to take our focus over to this article on trade rumors.me, NHLtrade Rumors.me. me. This was published by Rob Couch earlier yesterday and it talks about three teams the Penguins Koulak could be flipped to. Let’s dive into each of these teams and discuss whether or not they would actually make sense. The article talks about Elliot Freriedman’s update how Koulak can indeed be moved over to another team. Teams can afford Kulak’s cap hit, but if they can’t, the Penguins have three retention spots. And as mentioned, Koulak is a free agent after the year. Three teams that could still be interested in acquiring Koulak from Pittsburgh instead of the Oilers are as follows. One, the Detroit Red Wings. They’re first in the Atlantic division and playing well, but they are going to need an upgrade on defense. Fortunately for them, Sandine Pelica has come in and taken the top four spot as a 20-year-old, but the third pairing, where Koulak thrives, is open for upgrades. Albert Johansson has three assists, plays under 16 minutes a game, and has the six most short-handed ice time per game among the seven Red Wings defenseman. Hardly has an impact on the game. Jacob Bernard Docker, who plays 2 minutes less and has one assist in 20 games. This is all while Travis Hamick sits right in the middle of ice time with one assist in 18 games. The team has cap space to fit Koulak in easily and solidify their third pairing. Now, here’s the thing. Albert Johansson has not been great this year. Analytically, he’s been one of the worst defenseman in the league, unfortunately. And I would say that left D has always been an area that I think Red Wings fans can agree on. Needs some work. It’s why the entire trade Simone Edmonson for Quinn Hughes idea was never going to fly. You weren’t going to be able to trade away the long-term future of a Simone Edmonson for what is potentially only going to be a few years of Quinn Hughes, assuming he doesn’t resign. If you don’t guarantee that that guy’s going to stick around, you’re going to be screwed on the left side if Albert Johansson has to play first pair. So adding any depth, I think, would be reasonable for the Red Wings, and Koulak certainly would be a little bit more of an upgrade. Scrolling down, the Boston Bruins and Utah Mammoth are also written about over here. The Bruins have dealt with some injuries in the back end, and that could pose a threat if something happens to Makavoy or Lindholm again this year. Not only would bringing in Koulak be solid insurance since he can move up to the second pairing when needed, it would deepen their defensive group and give the team an elite group overall. It would just kick Sodor Strumm or Kolyan off the roster, but the latter was claimed off waiverss recently. Anyways, the Bruins are in a battle for the top of the Atlantic division, so they have reason to add and get better. And then finally, the Utah Mammoth are desperately trying to stay in the hunt for the playoffs after a rough stretch of games where they have been losing a lot. The team could really use some upgrades and they have the room and cap space to do so. Since Koulak is a D, that’s where we’re looking on the roster to upgrade. Nick De Simone or Olima can be dropped down. They’ve split time and neither has impressed. Koulak could join Ian Cole as a veteran third pairing on the team and would have another option if Shawn Dery or someone else were to get injured. Big shout out to Ian Cole, by the way. The guy’s been an absolute stud this season, blocking shots and providing my fantasy team with some pretty good value. But Boston and Utah, two teams also being labeled as potential Kulak suitors, there is the entire idea that implies Kulak could get traded back over to Edmonton, assuming that team is willing to free up the money elsewhere and then open up the space to bring Koulak back. if the Penguins were to get the draft picks they wanted. I would totally assume that’s a possibility. But some of these other teams, Detroit, Boston, Utah, I would not be surprised if they were also involved here, too. Obviously, though, this is just one guy’s opinion from one article, so you’re very free to disagree with it. You can let me know your thoughts in the comment section below, whether or not you think Detroit, Utah, or Boston could benefit from a guy like Brett Koulak coming over to their squad. Let me know in the comments section all your opinions. What do you think the trade price would be for this player? And do you think your team should go after him?
