POST CAST: WILD GAME ENDS WITH OTTAWA SENATORS BEATING CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS FOR 3RD STRAIGHT WIN
There was great, there was good, there was bad, there was ugly, and we’ll get into it all, but in the end, the Ottawa Senators find a 6-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. I’m Ross Levit and welcome to the postcast. I’m alongside Brandon Pillar. Lim’s Martian is running home from the CTC where he was boots on the ground. He will join us in a matter of minutes. As always, the postcast is brought to you by the Gleeb Central Pub. Check out the GCP where the vibes are free at 779 Bank Street and get on the send shuttle and you could be celebrating with Sue after a home victory. This one’s the send’s third straight win and it was a lot harder than it probably needed to be. >> Yeah, definitely. I mean, the Blackhawks were really giving this one away and then the sends were like, “Oh no, we’re not quite sure we want to take it.” And then the refs were like, “Ah, we don’t know who we want to give this game to.” uh disallowing goals, then allowing goals, then being like, “Whoops, our bad. That actually isn’t a goal from the start.” Like, this was a crazy one. I don’t think we’ve ever seen so much controversy about goalie interference in a game than this one. And then still having 10 goals total being scored, an absolute wild one for the good fans at the CTC uh on a Saturday afternoon. >> 10 goals counted 12 times the puck crossed the goal line in this one. We’ll get into the disallowed goals. That’s a part of the ugly. We’ll start with the great Tim Stutla. Three points. And hey, stick taps to David P. They don’t win that game without his two goals in the third period. But he ain’t scoring one of those. If Tim Stutla doesn’t go between the legs, feed right to the slot. And now he’s up to 13 points in his last six games. Timmy Superstar is finding a whole other gear with his game. And for him to score that short-handed goal, his first shorty of the season, as pissed off as he was after the Dylan Cousins goal got called back, that one had some extra emotion. And I saw on Twitter people were saying, I wanted him to do the good goal sign after scoring that one. But he had the bow and arrow ready to go and punch through it. He was ready and the boys really fed off of his ability tonight. This was Tim Stutzla far and away the best player on the ice. >> Yeah, I would agree. Uh definitely he kept it going with another multi-point night and three of them at that. Um yeah, that short-handed goal was so sick like that. That is the reason why Ross when whenever you’re getting on your pedestal saying Timmy’s got to kill penalties. I’ll give you that because Michaelio probably not pulling off that on a breakaway. Let’s be honest. And Michaelio had two different breakaway opportunities and he couldn’t bury it. So from that point, I will concede. It’s nice to have Tim Stoa killing penalties, >> but to be fair, the puck was bouncing on a Mattio there. The one clean breakaway look that uh that he did have. So, not so clean. I meant in terms there was bodies in the way really on the other opportunity he had. He just kind of healed it. But hey, all in all, two points is two points. Senators needed this one. They needed it in regulation and for me personally needed it by two goals. So, stick taps the boys for coming through. Fabian Zetland late in the third period. Less than four just over four minutes left gets this one to be a 6-4 final. But to go through the scoring summary would be the entire show. We’ll just say it started out with the refs getting involved right away. The goal on the ice counts and then a challenge comes down from Jeff Blill. And I I got to be honest, I think that the the second goal was more likely should have been more likely to come back than the first one. And classic NHL, it’s flipped, >> of course. Um although the first one was a weird one because Zeterland shoved into Solder Blum by Vassic. Now, at that point, I think what everyone always says is if you go into the blue paint on your own, what happens later doesn’t really matter. Whether someone shoves you, whether the goalie runs into you, whether you trip or fall, whatever, you’ve put yourself in a position to interfere with the goalie because you’ve gone into the blue paint by your own decision and on your own free will. So, I guess that’s the argument there when the NHL looks at it in Toronto. But yeah, like the second goal like Sodblum, he can slide over there and make that save if Brady Kachchuck’s not there, but Brady Kachchuck’s there and they showed the replay of his skate hitting Brady’s and then it going past both their skates and in. And then the since we’re on the goalie interference, the Dylan Cousins one. That one was a weird one because the ref called it no goal immediately on the ice and I thought like sure does he kind of get in Sodlam’s grill a little bit? Yeah. But I don’t think that stopped him from making the save because Sodom made the save. The puck was under him and then he kind of fished his legs around and kicked it in after. So goalie interference is impossible to predict. Anyone online that pretends like they’re the social justice warriors of goalie interference and they know right from wrong is lying to you or lying to themselves because nobody, and I mean nobody, coaches, general managers, players, TV personalities, nobody has a clue what is or isn’t goalie interference black and white. >> No, there’s no such thing as black and white when it comes to goalie interference. But the Senators prevailed. And you know what? Spin zone. The Ottawa Senators >> spin doesn’t have a noise. >> I think it might have to now. >> Okay, I like that though. >> But because this was a game Ottawa outshot the Blackhawks 40-24, almost double. They dominated that third period. Shots were 18-3 in the third period, but they still had to battle adversity through this game. This was not an easy win by any stretch. They blew three leads. They were up one- nothing. They were up 2-1. and they were up 3-2 going into the third period. Sends of years past blow this game and lose 6-4, not the other way around. So, another learning experience where you can go through the ups and downs within a game, but still come out with the victory in regulation. >> Yeah. And you need a full team effort to do that. Like, sure, Tim Stoler gets three points here, but we talk about uh David Braun with two goals. Uh look at Fabian Zetland staying hot as he scores a late one. So there was lots of guys that really had to make sure that they’re playing well to keep this going otherwise like you said the old sends let the Blackhawks into this game and probably lose in overtime. I could see the old sends doing that and and the Blackhawks that’s a team that for whatever reason has just had the sends number but thank goodness that didn’t happen today Ross because you tweeted it at Sen Central on Twitter. No Connor Bard and then Frankie Nazard leaving in this game and not coming back. >> Did you hear the news on that? >> No. >> Four weeks at least. >> Oh, I mean it looked bad. He was leaking pretty tough there. But like their number one all-star, one of the best players in the NHL, not there. And then the guy that’s supposed to step up in his place, leaving the game early, getting out of the game, and now they’re down a man. You cannot justify losing this game in any way, shape, or form. Now, the sends unfortunately they lose a player and Tyler Cleven. We’ll get to that. Obviously, not the magnitude of either uh Bard or Frankie Nazar, but still like when these opportunities are gifted to you on a platter, you got to scoop them up and take it and not worry about it. And the sends not pretty, but they took care of business here. >> Pzy, not to mention one of the best goalies in the league was sitting on the bench. And yes, Arvid Soderblum, >> he’s a tank goalie. He’s a rebuild goalie. Spencer Knight probably makes two if not three of those saves that went in the back of the net. >> Yeah. >> So, we’re all happy about that. And Arvid Soderblum, a stat I’ve been tracking for a couple years now, PZY. It’s not getting any better. Arvid Soderblum, after tonight, has 20 wins in 97 career NHL games. >> That’s got to be depressing to come to work every day. >> I mean, the the paychecks still hit the account. >> Yeah. Yeah. It’s either that or you’re in Rockford. So, yeah. You know what? On second thought, keep And I think he’s above 500 against the Leafs. So that’s another kind of fun story line within Arvid Soder Blum. But he was not good tonight. I mean the puck went past him eight times. >> Okay. So this was not a pretty game goalending wise for the Hawks. But Ottawa in games past even this season we said they pissed away points. They were able to do up their zipper and say let’s get this one done in regulation. Huge victory for Ottawa. A number of standout performances. Now, the great is Tim Stutla. The good is that the Ottawa Sanders were able to win this game in regulation. The bad is that Tyler Cleven was injured after scoring his first goal of the season. He did not return. That was not pretty. The way he went down, lower body injury. We’ll wait for an update on that. And we already covered the ugly. A ref literally turning his mic on and saying there was and he even he even emphasized it. He even tried to be a bit of a showman. There was not goalie interference and nobody listened after that. But he did say Ottawa got a penalty, >> but he pointed to center ice to center ice. >> Yeah, the this uh he didn’t get his coffee in time for this matinea game because that just made no sense. And cousins celebrating and then the other ref goes up to him was like actually that’s no goal and uh sends are going to get a penalty. You kind of messed that one up. and he’s just like, “Oh my god.” >> And like, “Yeah, you know what? This guy’s this guy’s refed NHL games. He was the junior of the two. TJ Luxmore has been around. Not that he’s a good ref either, but this guy’s been around for eight seasons. You cannot make that mistake.” >> And if you fully like I don’t Yeah, cuz he made half the mistake and then got half of it right. Like just didn’t make >> twothirds of a mistake. saying no interference and pointing at center ice double whammy and then saying that there was a penalty on the play. That was just ridiculous. Like Bruce Garrick’s been covering the Senator since we were born, Pilzy. And he says he’s never seen this in his life. I mean, no offense, Bruce. There was no TVs or replays back when you started. They just said, “Hey, was it a goal or not?” You just >> And he read it in the newspaper the next morning. >> Exactly what happened. But the Ottawa Senators come through tonight with a massive, massive victory. We’ll get into the third period, how Ottawa was able to pull away in this one. There’s also some questions that have arisen from this game. Levy Mariline, he was good at times, not so good at times. Is backup goalie a lock for Levy to have the rest of the season? I think that is a conversation we have to have at the end of this postcast. Martian will join us with a boots on the ground report in just a little bit. The chat is buzzing. I want to get to Sens fans in van. Appreciate you guys as always. What a beautiful little puppy there. We asked Sens fans to donate to a meaningful nonprofit, Tiffs AJ, also known as the Timmy Institute for Self-assisted Justice. This organization is one that helps sends fans overcome staggering instances of injustices at the hands of NHL refs. And Pelysey, this isn’t anything to do with the goals that weren’t going in. That cross check that he took in the first period. Matt Grizzlick, I mean, he’s lucky he didn’t get five in a game for that. And to call Timmy for roughing there just felt like they were just trying to at least make it look like something started it. They were literally, you see that after every single whistle, just a guy just a little push away from the crease to come back. Like Timmy could almost not be enjoying his Christmas turkey the way that he got that in the face. He’s lucky that he didn’t get any chicklets knocked out. >> Yeah, that was greasy by Grez. Greasy Grez right there. And especially cuz Timmy bit his lip on that one. I think the in the penalty box his lip was leaking there. So that one hurts a lot. So that sucks that that happened to Timmy. But I mean he gets the last laugh with three points in the dub here. >> And if you look at the hockey stat cards that we like to take a look at, Matt Grizz minus 4.4. The worst performance of any player that was on the ice tonight. Marshy is back. Boots in Manateic after being at the game. We’ll bring him in after a quick break. I’m Ross Levitan alongside Brandon Pillar. The Martian is standing by in just a moment. But first, let’s discuss some of the stats in tonight’s game. 6-4 the final score. Ottawa wins. They have that huge lopsided third period shots. 18-3 in the third overall. 40 for Ottawa and only 24 for the Blackhawks. The sends go one for five on the power play. The Hawks go one for three. The Senators, no surprise here, against a very young center core. Ottawa snaps back almost 60% of the faceoffs here. They out hit the Hawks 29 to 21. Couple doozies in there, too. And they get out blocked 17 to8 cuz the puck was in the Hawks end so much. And at five on five, the expected goals PZY 69.7% in favor of Ottawa. It was funny cuz I was looking at it and Chicago had the exact same amount of shots as Pittsburgh had in the last game and they had the same amount of hits, but wow did I ever have to change that five on five xG percentage. >> Yeah, the sends dominated this game, especially in the third period. They were able to close things out here. So, I know Ross, we had said the last couple games the key to the sends winning is to lose that um expected goals percentage, but I’ll I’ll take this the last couple games where they shut out the Penguins four nothing and then score six on the Blackhawks. I’ll take it. >> Home for the holidays and the Senators are making a very happy crowd at the CTC. This man was there and he joins us now. It’s the Martian. What’s up, fella? >> Hey, buddy. I’m good. How are you guys doing? >> We’re doing great. How about you calling Fabian Zetterland in the mix? >> That’s my guy right now. I’m back in on Zetterland. Everybody knows I’m back in on this guy and uh I was banking on him getting one. A lot of early chances for the kid and uh he ends up burying that one in the third period. Cash it out, but let’s go. That’s awesome. Yeah, >> dude. Was the vibe in the rink as good as it looked on TV? That was the loudest crowd I’ve heard in a minute. >> One of the best I’ve seen in a long time, Ross. Uh, honestly, as far as for me having fun at the game, uh, I don’t know if it was just the crew that was around me, which happened to be a really good crew tonight, but also, uh, just like the building was full. It was packed to the brim. Uh, everybody I think was probably pretty similar to me buying tickets ahead of time, trying to see the BDR show, but uh, what you end up with is a nice Ottawa Senator W. And, uh, yeah, people were into it. I mean, Saturday afternoon, 3 PM start is is probably ideal, I think, in most cases, right? You you come out of the rink and then you can get started with your Saturday night plans. It’s a good head start and uh what a hockey game, boys. I mean, talk about a fun game to be at. Uh lots of goals obviously and and just like overall really entertaining. like all the like drama at the beginning with the disallowed goalender interference goal at the start and then another one coming around that we thought was probably going to get called back that maybe should have been I mean when you look at the two goals together I would say the second one was probably less of a goal than the first one. >> Yeah. >> But it goes the opposite way. That’s the NHL today. And I mean that that just gets the crowd right into the game. The refu suck chance are starting. It’s it was dominant in there. Ottawa Centers fans really pulled their weight. I felt like uh you know earlier in the year I think that I’ I’ve called out the fans for not being perfect in in in their response to uh good hockey games. You right when things are going on you got to react. You got to be part of the game. And uh tonight that was definitely not the case. The the the Sens fans brought it and there was a lot of Chicago fans. I’m not going to lie. It’s one of those teams that definitely comes into the building and makes their presence known. Uh you guys probably heard on the broadcast when Chicago scored, you know, there was a little bit of a pop, but at the end of the day, what ended up happening was the Ottawa Sanders and their fans uh come out on top, and that’s what we like to see. >> Suns fans remain best in class. Uh Marshian, speaking about the fan reaction and a loud building. What was the biggest pop of the game? Was it the refs you suck chant? Was it uh a certain goal that six in mind? What was the moment for you? Timmy Staless short-handed breakaway. It It was a half cheer before the goal even went in. Pilzy, we all knew that was coming our way right there. As soon as he got that puck in his stick and he was ripping up the side of the ice, he was coming in like a pistol, right? And and I mean the German makes no mistake on that pills. That’s a it’s a beautiful goal. And that was the biggest pop. As soon as that thing went in, everybody knew it was like the hockey gods just like made it right. Right. with all the missed calls and all the mistakes and and this and that, whatever it is. Uh I think that that power play was kind of like it was weird, right? Because they called it what I don’t know if you guys were able to see it on the broadcast. They called it a goal. >> Oh yeah. For the Sans on the coach’s challenge and then out of nowhere, the pen box opens up and then and then there’s all of a sudden the Sans sitting in the box and it’s like what the hell just happened here? like we just got we just got screwed. It was a it was a total hoodwink, right? Where they were just like, okay, here’s a you know a good goal for the SS on the coach’s challenge and then all of a sudden it’s like no actually it wasn’t a goal and the coach’s challenge was failed and therefore you’re on the ple kill now and then sure enough Timmy Stutla and I was just like oh my god he I was I had my hands in the air before the the puck went in boys I knew he was going to score that goal. That’s what the German does. He’s a dominant player. I mean, three points tonight for that kid. He was dominant. And I mean, geez, you can’t stop him. >> No, you can’t even hope to contain him at this point. He has been electric. That is four multi-point games or five rather in his last six games during this. >> That’s ridiculous. >> Insane. >> He He is He is just taking his game to a whole other level. It It’s incredible to watch. And it’s also incredible that we’re 20 minutes into the show. We haven’t even talked about Thomas Shabbat, the impact that he’s made since coming back. We’ll save that for the other side. But before we get to that, I mean, this is going to be speaking of the the misplay by the ref and Senator with a great point in the chat being like, you get the misspeak because he did say and nobody was listening after he said no goalie interference. He did say that there was a penalty being assessed to Ottawa. It’s pointing to center ice. That is the most egregious mistake that I have ever seen. And we’ve seen some bad refereeing. Every time Eric Furlat walks into that building, it’s bad refing. But it’s it was unbeliev We’re going to be talking about this moment for years to come, right? Like I mean that was just messed up. He totally had me I was like all all screwed up because I was celebrating a goal and then I I turn around I go wait a second. Why is why it was Ridley Greg I think that ends up sitting down in the box. I’m like what what’s going on here boys? And then I was just like, “What the f?” And like I’m I was so confused and so I was so happy and then I was all of a sudden like, “Oh no, oh no.” >> They they should have allowed the goal and still given the Sans the penalty. Like that should have been like, “All right, we messed up, but it was wrong. So we’ll give you guys your goal, but you still got to get someone in the penalty.” When are we going to get I I mean, when are we going to get the referee press conferences that we’ve all been waiting for that we want, right? Like when there’s a bad call or there’s a something like this that’s just a complete mess up that like your delivery on that. There was a couple actually he on the Brady Kachchuck goal or uh sorry it was the Cleven goal but that Brady Kachchuck was being reviewed for goalie interference. The way he announced that was so dramatic. I don’t know if you caught that either. He was like after review of the play number seven did not like I was just like what the hell are why are you doing it? Why are you delivering it that way? Like why don’t you just say okay no goalie interference. It was a good goal. Like >> yeah that’s all they should say. Was goal or was there not goalie interference and is it or is it not a good goal? That’s it. That’s the script. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. The way he delivered it was like he he he made us believe before he actually said the verdict that it was going to be the other way around. It was so weird. I was just like what are you doing? I was like we were like oh here we go again. And then all of a sudden it’s like boom it’s a goal. It’s like okay perfect. But so weird man. >> Ridiculous. You know what ain’t ridiculous? The better team that that deserve to win this game. >> They won the game. Tyler Cleven, Tim Stutzla, Brady Kachchuck, David Peron, and then DP strikes twice in the third period. Fabian Zetterland puts the sprinkles on the Sunday, and the Ottawa Senators get a 6-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks. We got Sen Central standouts. No spoilers, but what a return for Thomas Shabbat. We also got an injury update on Tyler Cleven from Travis Green. We’ll get that to that next. You can join us on social media in the description below and sign up for the Everyday Dair Club. We appreciate everyone for making us your first listen each and every day. It’s one of those. You got the weekend backtoback. You get locked on Senators seven days a week, plus couple double dips with those weekday games, including a barn burner to start it off Monday when the Senators get the victory in Winnipeg. And we’ve just been riding that momentum ever since. Psy, we said the slump busters were here. I believe we told Dave Puland that when we saw him Monday morning and sure enough, the Suns have won three straight since. Holy smokes, it feels good. And it’s going to be a huge second game of this back-to back against the Boston Bruins on the road. The Sens might even make it to Boston before that game’s done because the Bruins play tonight at home. So, we’ll see how that game turns out tomorrow. One update is that Tyler Cleven will not play in that game. Travis Green not providing much more of an update other than that number 43 will be out of the lineup tomorrow which makes it an easy decision in the sense of getting Nicholas Matt and Paulo back. But boys I don’t want to beat a dead horse. We’re going to do this quickly because we got standouts to get to. Nick Jensen had another very tough game today. Very tough. >> Yeah. And you thought Thomas Shabbat returning would help that, but well, I guess not because then you’re elevating Jensen in the lineup, whereas when he was playing third pair with Matine Palo, I actually thought those two were figuring it out and Jensen was really turning a corner on the way he started poorly. But yeah, elevating him back to that top four. There were some key mistakes like um that McKay goal where he just gets right by him on that stretch pass was too easy. the end. >> I honestly think that look, it was a bad change and that’s not just on Jensen, that’s on everyone. But then both he and Shabbat went to the puck carrier and then when they passed it to the other side, there’s just nobody there and he has all day to then make the play to the trailer if he stays on his side that he was already coming down. They might have been able to get that out. But hopefully Jensen can figure it out. I mean, the minutes show that Travis Green understands what the situation is right now. Even going down to five defenseman with Tyler Cleven playing under seven minutes minutes, only nine shifts for him. Nick Jensen played 1427, the least of any of the other five defenseman for the sends. And I was trying to pull up quickly here. Maybe I can. Yeah, number three. So I don’t have to scroll too far. Uh Nick Jensen only played 440 in the third period after 516 in the second. So they understood what was going on there and they made the adjustments necessary. You look at the top two dogs for the Ottawa Senators on the back end tonight. Jake Sanderson plays 2717 and Thomas Shabbat plays 2637. >> That’s too much in his return. My god. >> Yeah. One for him. Damn. >> I mean, when the team’s at their best though, those are the two guys you need to have out there, right? That’s what he missed with Shabbat. Like those last like handful of games or 10 games, whatever he missed. It might have been even more than that. I know he came back for one game and then got hurt again. But having Shabbat in the lineup makes all the difference for this team, right? I mean, know Cleven’s been elevated. He’s been serviceable in that role, but he hasn’t been nearly the type of player that we know that Thomas Shabbat is. And boys, the play that he made on that Kachchuck goal was one of the nicest plays I’ve seen live. Like he gloves that thing down right at the blue line that like I mean like if there’s it could have been offside like depending >> the way the game was going. I was expecting the challenge to come out right >> like but look he caught that puck and then kept it in and then circles around gets down to the like kind of that half ball area and the pass he threads that needle right to Kachchuck in the slot and he buries that thing top shelf beautiful goal to see and that’s textbook silky smooth Thomas Shabbat hockey right there and that’s exactly the kind of guy we’re missing for him to go out there his first game back from an injury and play 263 37 on ice. >> I mean, what are we talking about here? We used to ride this guy for 30 minutes a night prior to Sanderson being in the building. I mean, he’s got a lot of miles on the system, but he comes in and right away 2637. Boys, that’s >> that’s not a light load. He’s right in the mix. >> And even it doesn’t count, so it’s unfortunate. But Thomas Shabbat on that first goal that disallowed was disallowed had an amazing play, too. enter the zone with speed, dangles through the middle, and then hits Timmy with that crisp pass, and then Timmy scores. Like, and that was like what, two minutes into the game. So, like, right away, obviously it doesn’t count, but you’re like, “Wow, >> we forgot what Thomas Shabbat can do when he’s feeling it and when he gets a puck on his stick.” >> I will not stand for any Thomas Shabbat slander amongst our fan base. I will defend him to the to the depths of hell. Like, I love this guy. He’s done a lot for this franchise. He’s been through it. He needs, you know, he needs his flowers, boys. Like, this is a freaking Ottawa center here. We’re talking about this. A really good Ottawa center. When we’re looking at games played, he’s climbing the ranks here. If he reaches that thousand threshold, are we talking about 72 going in the round? Let’s win a playoff series first. >> Just I’m just joking around obviously, but >> hey, 20 20 games away from the 550 game milestone. I know Pzy’s got that one circled. >> 550. Yep. That’s huge. Oh man, this was a great game for Thomas Shabbat though and and I mean I know it got called back but getting an assist on basically his first shift was so nasty and glad to see him get one proper and the two longest serving senators combine on a goal which leads me. I don’t often kick it off usually. I’m very selfless. >> You are. >> The captain deserves some serious love. This game was looking like it was getting chaotic. It was chaotic, let’s be honest. And when it got tied up after Timmy score short-handed, they kill the five on three, but then it is that ensuing penalty that was taken by Nick Jensen that they score on to tie it at two. The captain says, “No, boys, hop on my back. I got this.” Brady Kachchuck finishes the game now. He’s got four goals his last three games, by the way. So, the captain’s now scoring goals. He also played almost 20 minutes in this game. Had four hits and nine shots on goal. I don’t know how many times we need to tell people that you are leaving money on the table if you’re not getting Brady Kachchuck shots every single night. It is incredible the consistency that he shows in getting pucks on net. I I would just if I have any sorry Py before you go just no >> worries >> easy betting advice if you’re a really rich person even at like minus 200 200 you know minus 200 you could put $1,000 on Brady Kachchuck to get three shots and is a guarantee it’s going to hit in the first period >> with an asterisk nothing’s guaranteed it is sports guarant >> yes thank you thank you >> but pretty much >> the tough thing is Vegas is catching on to it like a year or two ago Brady’s threshold for shots shots was three and you’re still looking at plus money or close to plus money. Now four is still in the minuses like you got to bump it up to five which when you’re getting nine shots you’re not sweating that one out too much but they’re they’re catching on to the fact that lots of people are cashing in on that one. >> Yeah, no doubt. Speaking of Brady, one play that I wanted to mention that didn’t end up in a goal. Actually, it ended up in a Nick Jensen giveaway and a play the other way in the third period when Ottawa was ahead and they needed to keep possession in the offensive zone. Brady Kachchuck had a shift that started on the right wall. He spins off a guy, goes to the left wall, spins off a guy, goes behind the net, spins off a guy, and then when it’s three Hawks on him, he then just rims it around behind the net and keeps possession in the zone. That was an incredible, we’re up, let’s protect the puck, but play in the offensive zone move. That was incredible to watch. And then it goes to point and Jetson just puts it on the Hawk stick and they break out the other way. I was like, if I’m Brady, I’m so mad. I was like, I just did 30 seconds of gritty work all for nothing. >> You know what, though? It was the right play at the right time. That was what I mean. He looked like uh he looked like, remember when Crosby used to uh circle around behind the net against Jason Spettza? He almost looked like Jason Spettza himself doing that, throwing his butt out and and making sure nobody was getting near him when he had the puck. It was It was a great play by Brady. But yeah, obviously like it just didn’t work out that perfectly. But >> dick taps to Brady Kachchuck, my Sun Central standout. Pillsy, who you got? >> All right. Well, if you’re going to snap it to me, then I’m going Tim Sutza for sure here. I mean, >> what an absolutely amazing game from him. >> One goal, two assists, a plus for under 20 minutes. So, Ross, that stat that we looked at where Timmy seems to be able to have more success when he plays less than 20 minutes. That holds true in this one. And his only shot of the game is his goal short-handed on a breakaway. An absolute beauty. He gets two hits. He gets it done in the dot. 54.5% and that is going 6 for 11. So we love to see that from Timmy Stutz. I mean that breakaway was so good too because he does that. It’s almost like he just waves the stick over the puck a couple times to see if the goalie will bite and then he just flips it top shelf on him. So he’s like I don’t even need to do a move. I’ll just make you think and worried that I’m going to do a move then I’ll just score on you. So yeah and he starts that play himself. He knocks down that terrain and I I don’t know if it was a as much a sauce pass as it was kind of a dump in but it was a high pass shot and Timmy knocks it down breakaway bang bang goal and then you talk about that being impressive his assist to David Prawn was almost as impressive if not more that between the legs backwards pass that hits Pon right on the tape to set him up like this guy’s just an absolute stud. We call him Timmy superstar for a reason. He is electric. Puts butts in seats. Marian, you said lots of people bought tickets for the Bard show. Yeah, cancel the Bard show tickets and sign up for the Tim Stutzler show tickets because he will impress every single night. >> And Marcy, I’ll get to your thoughts. Boots on the ground, but because you were there, you didn’t get to hear his interview in the second intermission where Claire Hannah was asking how do you get through this adversity second period back and forth? and he just said like they’re a good team but we’re better and we need to win this game and to come out and then make that play between the legs like yeah you are better than you are better than them that’s the kind of calm confidence I love to hear from the German right there like that’s just beautiful stuff like he’s one of those guys guys he’s a game-breer and I’ve been saying this for years Pzy you said it he does put butts in seats the one time you go if like say you haven’t been to a hockey game in a while and you go and you watch number 18 skate around in black on the CTC ice surface. You’re going to get turned on by that. >> It’s it’s unbelievable, boys, how what he does out there. And it’s not even the highlight reel stuff that you see, you know, you know, on on Sports Center in the morning. It’s it’s everything he does. I feel like he’s skup. I feel like he’s worth the price of admission because he buzzes around that warm-up. He dominates out there, too. It’s It’s something special, boys. And he’s the kind of guy that I mean, he makes the team. He, you know, he he makes the team. I feel like he’s one of those guys who really sets the sets the tone for everybody else, too. He’s a leader, whether we like to admit it now or not. Like, at this point in his career, he’s a leader on this team for sure. Without doubt. Guys in that room look to the German uh for for a lot of things. I think obviously Brady’s the the top dog. He’s the alpha, but second in command right now for me is is Tim Stewart. >> And he passed another Germanborn Ottawa Senator on the Ottawa Senators all-time points leaderboard with his second of the three points tonight. Tim Stutzla has now moved into ninth all time, passing Danny Heatley in points. >> I was like, there’s no way Kristoff Schubert has that many points. >> You like that, though? Yeah. Danny Heatley born in Germany, grew up in in Calgary. So he is obviously hockey candid, Olympic gold medalist, all that. But yeah, Tim Stutzel is now passed Danny Heatley in points by an Ottawa senator. >> Points, he’s got 27 to tie Marian Hosa for eighth. Like he’s doing that this year and it might even be before the Olympics. >> And he he’s gonna >> it might even be next week. You could look at that list and I I think he he you know he cracks the even higher threshold of that late that list pretty soon. Guys, we got him until 2030. >> It’s >> No, we got he he loves Ottawa. This guy’s a senator for life. >> Ah, he’s the best man. Oh, what are we doing here? >> Can you Can you believe he’s still 23 years old for another month? >> Insane. It’s disgusting how young he is. >> Disgusting. Yeah. M. Hall pointing out couple number 18s there in Marian Hosa or as Jacqu Marte says ha. >> I love I love the way he love the way he says it. >> It’s the best. I can listen to it literally all day. It’s awesome. Um and it is kind of cool that Jacques always makes mention of Hassa every time he talks about his memories. He always says Alfredson and Hassa were the two best players that he got the privilege of coaching. So, um, if you want more on Jock Martine, we chatted about that on Thursday’s show being, uh, scheduled to go up in the Ring of Honor on January 24th. That’s a camp miss game. We’re going to do our best. Can’t promise. God, I got stupid responsibilities, but I want to be there so bad that um, that’s an awesome, awesome time. But this new era of Sense Hockey is centered around Brady Kachchuck and Timmy Superstar and Thomas Shabbat you can add in to the mix. Marshy, your Sen Central standout tonight. Yeah, and you you just mentioned Thomas Trabat, and I really really want to give him a standout, but I’m not going to go that way. Honorable mention, too, to Fabian Zetterland, who I mean, you know, in the bank account, >> one-on-one pat account. Great game from him. I’m back in on him. Everybody knows that. >> You know what’s sad? My my goal scorer prop tonight was Dylan Cousins. The goal got taken away, buddy. Oh, that’s tough. It’s all good, though. I had puck. >> Hey, that hurts, pal. I feel that a lot. But I’m I’m going to go with uh another Quebec native. Uh David Pon, baby. >> This guy this guy is clutch. He is a clutch Ottawa Senator. And uh you know what? Just for the finishing ability tonight, I think David Pon deserves a standout. Obviously, two goals. The second one, it seemed like he was like inconvenienced by scoring that goal. It was like he scored it and he’s just like, nah. Like everybody get out of my face. Get the cameras out of my face. We’re just going to just like cruise over here and like how funny was that, right? Like I mean this guy, he’s a veteran. Pillsy 800 points. >> 802 now. >> 802 now. I’m just saying uh you know this guy now that he’s hit 800 points, he doesn’t even care when he scores goals. It’s a beautiful thing. He’s just like, “Yeah, that’s just that’s just another notch on the belt, boys. No big deal.” So, uh, I I think David Braun all all night either either either way he was just like, you know, down low winning puck battles and then also when he when he got the puck in a scoring position, he was just burying it. So, David PM for me was was an easy standout choice. Two goals. >> Yeah. And that second goal was such a sick shot, too, because he does a good job of waiting to get that better angle and then finds it and just goes top shelf there. So, yeah, I like David Prawn as well. And uh yeah, I think those are probably really all the standouts once you look at the honorable mentions of Fabian Zetland there as well. Kind of >> I give an honorable mention of Jordan Spence. I thought he had a freaking awesome game. Not just cuz he was a plus two, but I thought he was moving the pill tonight really well and defending hard too. So I I liked what I saw and with Jensen taking a step back like they need a second right shot D behind Zub and and Spence gave them a ton of good minutes tonight. Also, just a quick little shout out because I thought that David Braun goal was the TSN turning point of the game. Like that one, it felt like, okay, now they finally get that twogoal lead later in the game. That gives him a cushion. Obviously, Chicago scored again. I was like, oh man, that ends up being a huge one. How about Fabian Lickel on that play? >> Fabian, is that what you’re calling him now? >> Fabian Lickl that earlier today, too, Pzy. That’s That’ll happen. >> My bad. >> The liquor, right? Right. If you stick to the liquor, you won’t. >> All right, we’ll go with the liquor then with a great pinch and he gets in there hard and he takes a big hit. I think it was from Lev Shinov, but that keeps the play alive. And then Timmy’s able to do that sweet pass to Prawn and he scores. Like that’s the kind of hustle that you have to have if you want to find your way in this lineup and to beat out an all-star player like Curtis McDerman. You got to be able to make plays like that. >> What a line, eh? Stutzla, Lexel, and Pon combining for that goal. Oh, that’s a greasy line. Like what an eclectic little group that is. >> It really is. Well, >> the hardworking Swede. >> Well, Timmy I think I mean they’re just showing Timmy can play with anyone. We just saw we just saw on Monday Tim Stutzla on the ice with Curtis McDermad and Nick Cousins scoring a goal. >> I mean he drive he he drives everything. >> He could probably play with Pillsey and I on his wings and still light it up. >> Yeah, he’s like that. He’s like that. He’s like that, you know, 60 horsepower motor that you put on the back of a tin boat and that it doesn’t even matter what, you know, what the boat looks like, but that thing’s going to go. >> Yeah. Final uh final qu final question from me to you boys and then I’ll get some final thoughts for you guys. Uh to wrap it up, my S central standout was Brady Kachchuck. Pillsy is going with Tim Stutlaw and Marshy’s got David Pon. His two goals in the third period. Huge reason why Ottawa was able to win this game. Levy Marilinan had four goals against on 24 shots. That’s an 833 save percentage. If you look at goals saved above expected, he was minus.9. So, there were some high danger chances mixed in there. There was a goal or two where it’s just like, okay, no chance, move on. Couple of them where you’re like, uh, maybe you want that. But for me, it’s more so like, is this a guy who would be better off being the starter in Belleville right now? Pillsy, do you think that would be a better spot for him or do you think that this is still the right development path because long term he’s the send starter in waiting? Like what do you think the best short-term play is for Carolina? >> I think it’s it probably would be better for him to be starting in Belleville. And I mean, man, he would get a lot of action in Belleville. that team struggling. But for the organization as a whole, I don’t think it would be smart asset management to bring in another guy, spend assets to bring someone in, spend more cap, bring someone in. This was their plan all off season was Lena Smark number one and Levy Marilina in the backup. It’s only been what, eight? He’s only had eight starts. Like I like it’s just too early. I know it hasn’t been going good and the numbers are not good for Levy, but we’ve seen when he gets hot what he can do. So, I think you got to give it more time here. >> Okay, fair enough. Marcy, your thoughts? Boots on the ground. >> Yeah, I mean I actually I actually thought he was good. Like for the most part tonight, he made a lot of really big saves. He was covering pucks, tracking them well. The numbers to me don’t when it comes to a backup goalie, they don’t really that doesn’t matter to me. It’s all about wins and losses, right? and and tonight was a win for Levy. So like you can’t look at it as like a a detractor I don’t think in any way for him tonight. Uh when you talk about him going back to Belleville I think those days are done you know right he is like you said Ross the the starting goalie and waiting he’s young he’s backing up and he is he is there to to fill in when Lenus doesn’t feel like he’s ready to go or or when the coaching staff decides that Lenus needs a night off. So for me I d I have no problem with anything that he did tonight. So there’s there’s no reason to worry about that in my book. And it’s great experience for him, too. He’s only going to get better from here. He’s young as hell. We talked about this that 2020 draft, the sends made out like bandits, thank god, in that draft, right? They got five guys. It’s like, h how do you do that? Right? And so for me, like Levy Marilina fits right in with this group. He’s where he belongs. He’s doing his job. And you know, he got a win tonight. So there’s no chance I’m talking about anything regarding Belleville and Levy, Carolina right now. >> Okay, I just wanted to throw that out there cuz he’s got dare you >> four wins in nine games and this was his first win in five starts. But hey, let’s try to build on that. You look at it too. Levy Marilyn and he’s a guy that thrived during COVID working from home. Levy is now 81 and one on Canadian Tire Center ice in his career. He’s 48-1 on the road. He’s 81 and one at the Canadian Tire Center. Really cool stat uh line there. Uh Psey, any final thoughts on today’s show. We got a quick turnaround. We got the postcast tomorrow night. Senators taking on the Bruins. What are you going to be looking for there? >> Uh I’m going to be looking for a big game from Lena Smark. Uh I’m going to be looking for Tim Stozell to get multiple points again. Why not? And we’re on a three-game heater here, but it’s a division game on the road that could end up uh being the most important here because you look at the standings, Ross, and Senators at with 38 points now. They’re two points behind Boston who has 40, but Boston, Montreal, and Florida all have 40. So, you notch those two points in regulation, you put yourself in a good position there. So, you got to find a way to win up against the Bruins in regulation. And I don’t see why they can’t do it. And the floor keeps rising, right? The Sabres are winning right now as we record this. We’ll see how that game finishes, but they could be five straight wins for them. So, Ottawa with three straight wins. Huge for them. They’re now five and five in their last 10, which is great to see them starting to string together these wins. That’s now four wins in their last five games after losing five of six. So, bit of a streaky stretch for the Senators, but hopefully this hot streak can last even longer. Mercy, any final thoughts from you? Yeah, actually I was a little bit of surprised that Lena Zar didn’t get the start tonight coming off a shut out like maybe just carry that momentum as quickly as he can but with them on a backto-back it makes sense and especially against the Bruins Ross I so he has played in Boston before I guess. >> Yeah, that uh he remember he put the puck up to Brady for the breakaway or was that Calgary? I thought >> that was Calgary. >> What was the Boston overtime game Brady Brady scored last year? I just remember there’s been a couple instances where the Sens have played the Bruins and Lenus has been the backup on those nights because that was the night that they chose to especially I think it was the first one especially when they played the Bruins. Uh >> Lovey’s played them a couple times. Yeah. >> So, you know, it’s good to see that they’re giving him that start cuz I think coming off a shutout, you’re going to have that momentum like I said that he’s going to have confidence going into this game against this former team. I expect big things from him. I I think that this team, like I’ve said before, uh last couple games, uh or two games ago, I said I think the Suns are going to go on a runner and now it’s three in a row and I think they’re going to play the Bruins and Lenus is going to be a big factor in this game tomorrow night. So, that’s what I’m looking forward to here. >> Yeah. So, it was in Boston. He did play that game. I can’t remember the winner. Kachchuck got an unassisted goal they called it, but yeah, Lenus played that game. Only had to make 14 saves. Uh Ottawa outshot Boston that game 34-6. Hopefully we get something similar tomorrow night and cheer for that to be a really hard-nosed game tonight. The Bruins are hosting the Vancouver Conucks. Canucks come in winners at three straight plus 152. I’m hopping on that for the Canucks tonight. Uh we’re also hate watching the Panthers right now. The Blues are up one- nothing uh in the second period. So, there’s some big games tonight. Pittsburgh into Montreal. We want Pittsburgh to win. Uh they got to get a win for their dads, right? Of course. and help out Ottawa because Montreal is two points up on the Senators right now in the Atlantic division. We’ll be back tomorrow for the postcast. Enjoy your victory Saturday night. I always say there’s nothing better than a matinea win on a Saturday where you can settle onto the couch and say, “Hey, go beat the heck out of each other, guys. go sens go!
GSG, keep it rolling for Boston.
Hot Chabot take: I love Sanderson as much as anyone, but I want Chabot on PP1. We all know everything Sandy does so well, but no one on the team can hold the line so well on the powerplay as Chabot. Love that guy, so glad he's back.
Can't get enough of LOSP, great show guys. Looking forward to hearing you again tomorrow. GSG
Just when the D looks to get healthy and build some chemistry, Kleven goes down. Ffs
I'm so so glad Chaby is back😊, Go Sens Go
Love a vibecast boys. I’ve been a bit negative about the lack of offense and still think Green's system doesn’t maximize our talent…but man I love the way that Timmy, Brady and Sandy are playing right now.
Keep it up.
GSG
Memorable game and Postcast….Go Sens Go!
Glad to get the result but not entirely happy with how they got it done. I just don't understand the play in the dzone this game was awful how do you let that Blackhawks squad score 4 goals when they are missing their 2 best offensive weapons
I thought every goaltender interference challenge/call was correct in the end. I just don't get how the refs mess up that bad he contradicted himself 3 times in the call how does that happen
Soderblom was never saving that 2nd goal he wasn't going to get there in time that's why it didn't count. The 1st goal was clear interference idk what Zetterlund is doing going into the crease like that. The 3rd goal was borderline but it being called off on the ice I didn't like the challenge too risky
This was suuuuch a good win! I am very close to being back in the positive column for the season – they just need to win tomorrow to prove they can make things happen. But today was a really really good sign. Brady's best game of the season. He played a lot of awesome hockey out there and his skating was the best we've seen from him this year. Timmy was on fire, he owned the Blackhawks tonight. Everyone else played really well and they overcame tons of adversity (dumbass situation room in Toronto and these idiot refs). They also drove the middle so hard, AGAIN, in this game. This is such a positive sign…
Yah baby … Zetty for parley W 😅
Impressed with Perron's shots tonight.🎉
I agree with you guys. I thought the first goal review should have been a goal and the second should not have been a goal. At least it evened out.
Good wins boys, keep it going! GSG
always nice to have some hockey played inbetween a zillion challenges. i dont know what others think: i feel our beautiful is destroyed by it. humans make mistakes, has always been like that. so all goals given should count. transparency has rarely been positive for human life. right now, i cant feel happy any more when a goal is scored, as i dont know if it counts.
Character building game. Overcame adversity. Chabbys back. Confidence up. Back to back vs Boston is a big test against division rivals. GSG
The composure that Piller had when Lalimes said he’s turned on by sexy Stuetzle….. I effing roared !!! lol
