#CINvsMIA postgame press conferences | Miami Dolphins

Um, we got to make the corrections and make the adjustments. So, I haven’t seen what happened or what we got hit with, but we got to be able to fly around and just, uh, play our brand. We can’t come out flat like that. >> What impressed you about Joe Burrow today? >> They did a great job on offense, uh, getting the ball out quick, uh, staying on rhythm, and we got to do a better job of getting back there and affecting it. So, they can’t do that. Given that this was Quinn Eers’s first start, did the defense come out with a feeling like we got to do something for him. We got to do something better for him. >> Absolutely not. No, we we had all the confidence. Um came out just like any other game and I think we came out hot. We came out good. Uh I think we played well in the first quarter, first half. Um obviously haven’t seen the tape yet or anything like that, but um clearly we just weren’t able to hold up at the end. Um so we got to make find a way to make it right and get better and move on to Tampa. among young guys on this defense. Anyone uh impressing you? I know that there was a moment where the last two first round picks combined for a sack and uh Ken and KG and uh and Chop. >> Yeah, those guys are doing great. Um there’s a lot of guys learning out there. There’s a lot of guys that are giving their all every play. Um and is it going to be perfect? Absolutely not. Am I going to be perfect? Absolutely not. Um but the whole thing is eliminate eliminating as many little errors as we can and playing as a unit, all 11 of us. Um and so if we strive for that every week, we’re going to get better. And it sucks to keep saying, we just got to keep going forward. >> What do you hope to get out of these final two games? Now, >> uh, show our brand of football. Um, we’re not going to lay down. We’re going to keep playing. Um, do what we can every single snap and, uh, play the best ball we can play individually and as a team. All >> good. >> Thanks, guys. Thank you. How would you assess Quinn Yurs’ first start? >> What’s that? >> How would you assess Quinn Eurers’s first start? >> Um, yeah. I’m uh it’s uh a little difficult. um there’s a a lot of venom and anger just towards um the the resulting third and fourth quarter. But as I take a step back and um you know I I feel like I there was uh some positive um stuff going on with you know him be it being his first start. It wasn’t too big for him. Um he had us operating. I think we had no penalties in the first half. Um and ultimately we were uh it was 17 uh to 14 out of the first half. Um and then uh you know the the the second half it’s tough to evaluate um specifically. I think there was a couple third downs that I was hoping he could make. He um you know I think it’s a good starting point for him specifically. Uh but um you know kind of my focus right now without watching the tape is uh I’m just very very um frustrated and angry about uh this continued third quarter thing um where uh it appears that you know we let uh we we let the circumstances that are outside of our control kind of Um, you know, really the the dam breaks and all of a sudden we play different style of football. The way I look at it look at it is um I’m I’m furious because I’m allowing it to happen. It starts with me. Uh and while I’m up here after games, uh you probably won’t get u much other fingerpointing besides uh I need it I need to get it fixed. We have two games to play um that are incredibly important and we need to um uh look ourselves in the mirror and find out who’s um you know a part of the solution and uh we will uh start that um as as soon as possible. >> To to your point you guys have been outsc scored 113 to 27 in the third quarter now is so this wasn’t like a brand new thing that happened today. Is there any, you know, thing that’s consistently going wrong in the after halftime? >> Well, I think um, you know, I I would I’ll go through I could go through all the things that we’ve tried to do and they’ve been unsuccessful. Um, because it’s not like it hasn’t been on our radar. Um this this has been something that uh and collectively we you know those 27 points are probably um all in uh games where the you know the after halftime momentum um you know is is in our favor. It’s not good enough. um you have to be able to um uh come out from halftime and adjust and uh we aren’t um uh executing that at all. So uh back to the drawing board and all things are on the table for that because it’s um I I could have I I knew it was a ratio like that. um which bottom line is not going to um you’re not going to w more football games than you lose uh doing things like that or or playing the type of brand that we expect for ourselves. So, um not good enough. >> Remain the starter for next week. >> You know, I think um I uh I I think I have to look at the tape, but um that’s kind of how I had it uh in my mind during the game. I thought he uh he earned some some uh opportunities uh to or to continue to develop. Um I I was I was happy how he handled the position. That’s not easy. Um and you know, I think that that that’s what’s frustrating is you it would be a lot better if it was on the rookie quarterback and I don’t think it was. Outside of that big run, um Bengals kind of did a good job bottling up Devon Hen. Just what exactly do you think went wrong? >> Uh I the you know a strength of ours um that we we’d gained some momentum um you know just in the run game in general and you know for the first time uh really this that I can remember this season it felt like we had the opportunities to run and we were getting out techniqued. uh they had a good plan um and they they wanted to be on the uh finer details a little bit more than we did. I I think the space um that we’re usually able to create wasn’t there and I saw a lot of guys winning pad level and uh and um kind of knocking us out of gaps um which [snorts] is not the type of brand of football um that we expect from from our guys that have that are very prideful. So I know um you know fortunately we have you know the um one of the top leaders on the team in that room and between um Brew and Austin Jackson uh those those guys will uh you know corral the troops and my expectation is that doesn’t happen to us again um next week. >> What was the explanation you got on the Theoise penalty? It seemed like you were pretty irate over that call. Um, yeah, it was uh I was I rate um and I didn’t they their explanation didn’t necessarily match what I saw. Um, and uh, you know, I I just told them that um, I would prefer to not hear about how it was wrong or from the league and it was bottom line is I’m more focused on the Yeah, the call didn’t go our way. Um, and I think, you know, you guys could tell by what I thought of it live, but um, the response mechanism from our team when something doesn’t go our way is is what I’m critically examining um, for these next two games because the just that shouldn’t derail the team. Um and it felt like uh ultimately it did where you know there was um shortly after that there was uh guys breaking tackles and or there was broken tackles or um nonform fitting staple tackles like we had done in the first half and they they they got easy yardage that um before that call didn’t exist. So that that’s where my focus is. Um although that wasn’t ideal. Um and obviously at the time I disagreed with it. >> Mike, the team will have a losing record now for a second consecutive season. How would you sort of describe the state of the program? >> Well, I think the the the program is um defined by how how the the core um of the team uh works through stuff like this. This is not you’re not avoiding uh adversity in the National Football League. Um but you’re trying to use what do we know? We know we’re not in the playoffs. Um so you can gain some momentum. Um, and you know, I thought, um, up until really the third quarter of this this game, you could you could make arguments uh that the momentum of the program um, you know, was was um, being carried in the right direction. I think momentum um, changes swiftly. I think uh, you get the opportunity to see who people really are in situations like this. Um, but uh you you’re really trying to establish um who who are your core people um and where uh where are you leaning on um and where do you need to get better when you’re trying to get um you know different you know the the offseason is there’s like 45% roster turnover. So, um I I think you know you you’re the the biggest thing is is the the the guys need to respond in the way that they’ve responded all year um and to to situations that aren’t um ideal. I thought we responded from a very disappointing second half uh last week in this first half, but it’s four quarters, not a half. So, um, beyond that, I’m going to be focused on our team playing the, uh, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who will have a lot to play for, um, which g gives us a great opportunity to, um, see what each and every one of us is made of. >> Obviously, are a big part of what they do. Just how would you evaluate the team’s defense on that? Well, I think uh you know there was a couple plays that we gave up down the field um that you know I don’t go into the game saying those can’t exist because that’s the strength of their team. Um the you know overall uh you know I think uh beyond the the T. Higgins early one um you know their down the field shots uh didn’t happen. So, they had to earn it. And the the biggest issue is we kind of knew that we’re going to have to um you know, play light in the box at times, but we’re going to have to tackle well. And they they have hard runners that um that that take advantage of the uh the light boxes that show up a lot. And uh I was just disappointed in the in the uh specifically the third quarter tackling um that we have to go back to the drawing board and get right. the decision to the decision to activate the O’s for the game. Was it as simple as his familiarity with Quinn or was there something else that went into? >> No, he’s um uh he’s been a uh uh a value adder um on scout team um and been not just in uh offensively but also on special teams and uh you know I think he he had earned the opportunity. He’s um one of the one of the guys that uh our our team was really excited for to have that opportunity. Uh it it was a plus that they had experience playing together, but it was more Theo and um you know what given him a deserved opportunity that he had earned through practice prep. >> The uh the NFL network said you’re you know they’re sort of the PR wing of the league. They they they said you’re expected to be back next season. I’m just curious, has that been conveyed to you? >> Yeah, I mean, I think uh like I’ve said before, um we we uh the the focus for for me as a head coach. Um there’s plenty, as you guys can see, there’s plenty of me. Uh there’s plenty to focus on. Um that, you know, I don’t spend my time thinking about uh the the job I already have. I try to do it to the best of my ability. and I have some work to do um to get uh our third quarters right and we’re not going to have any time to waste um because there’s going to be a hungry Tampa team that we’re going to face um in in a week. So my focus is there and uh you know I think everyone’s everyone depends on me to have my focus there and and that’s where I’ll leave it. >> [clears throat] >> Quinn, how would you describe your emotions last night and today before the game? >> Um, man, I was I was calm and I was ready for the opportunity at hand. um felt like I had a great grasp of the game plan and I felt like I had the confidence of the guys around me. Um and I was just fired up to to get back out there on the field. >> How did you feel once the game started first half? You seemed pretty uh comfortable poised and then uh just why did it kind of unravel for the team as a whole the second half? >> Yeah. No, um to your point, I think we came out and played well in the first half. Um we kind of got into a good flow there for a little while. Um, and then coming out the second half, I I thought, you know, we came out well and then we had that big play get called back and um, we had the turnover and, you know, it’s just it’s hard to it’s hard to win ball games whenever you have three turnovers and, you know, I wish I had a couple of those throws back. Um, but I think it’s a good learning moment and experience for, you know, all those guys in the locker room and, you know, myself included. Um, you know, not the result that we wanted. It’s unfortunate. What was Tua uh like out there on the sideline for you? >> Yeah. No, he was good. Um super encouraging um to me and all the guys. You know, again, he’s in a tough position um you [snorts] know, in that spot. you know, like I’ve said earlier this week, I’ve been there and I know how he feels and, you know, I thought he did a really good job um of helping me out um on the sideline and continuing to talk to those guys and continue to encourage those guys. >> What was his job on there with the uh with the board? >> Um it’s pretty much what I’ve been doing all all year and he’ll just write the number of the uh wristband in case I don’t hear it from from Mike. as a man, how difficult is to put in all that week of preparation and not getting the result that you ultimately want? >> Yeah, I know it’s tough. Um, you know, coming out here, like you said, after a good week’s work and an NFL preparation week and, you know, for it to go the way that it that it did is, you know, it’s tough. Um, especially when you see the the the amount of work that these guys put in week in and week out, coaches included, it’s tough to come out here and, you know, lose the way we did for sure. But you have to you got to find find the good sometimes and in and all that. And um, again, like I said earlier, there’s a lot of learning to do. Um, so continue on. Life continues. >> How did you feel throwing to guys? I mean, obviously your chemistry with the O’s has been there since preseason. How did it feel throwing to guys like Darren and Jaylen and [snorts] Greg? >> Yeah. No, it it it felt good to to be out there. You know, it’s it’s always nice to be back out there on the field. You know, it’s it’s been a little while. So, but you know, I thought a rapport was was pretty good. I thought we did a good job during the week. Um you know, getting extra throws after practice. Um you know, getting the timing down with these guys, but um felt good. Quinn, playing your first full game as a as a starter since college, the mechanics again, the play call, the speed of the game, everything for 60 minutes. Uh, did it feel fast to you or did you feel like you settled in pretty quick? >> It didn’t feel fast to me. I thought I thought during the week I thought we did a good job of, you know, keeping our eyes on the play clock, excuse me, and um, you know, not getting in the rhythm of practice, like, hey, it’s just practice. we’re going to continue on to just, you know, go through the motions or whatnot. But, you know, we had a we had a play play clock on me during the week. Um, which I think helped a lot, but it felt good to be out there. Didn’t feel fast. So, >> are there one or two things you learned today or this week that will help you next week? >> Yeah, totally. I think that in football adversity is going to strike and um it did tonight a few times and uh I thought we learned kind of who we are when adversity strikes and I thought we did a good job of putting that um you know that series together when we went down there and scored to make it uh 21 points um and just staying in the game. You know I feel like the college game is obviously very different than the NFL game. you don’t get as many opportunities and and drives. So, um you know, it’s really important to make those count. >> Did the 97 yard drive give you some confidence? >> Totally. Totally. Um again, it’s it’s it’s always nice for me um whenever the guys around you are are are doing their jobs. And when we put drives together like that, I think it’s very important for for the offense’s confidence as well. >> Coach McDaniel said that he has it in mind to start you next week. Um, what do you think of that? [snorts] >> Man, I’m ready for the opportunity. Um, ready to come back out here and I think that we’re all going to have a little bad taste in our mouth from tonight. So hopefully we come out there with a with a better result next week. And I just love challenges. So, I’m going continue to strive forward, continue to put the work in, continue to grind, continue to build relationships with these guys, and you know, um, it’s football at the end of the day. We played it our entire lives. Now, we just do it in a little bigger of a stage. So, just try not to make it bigger than it is and continue to to grow as a quarterback and as a person. >> I know you and Theo had a good connection during training camp. Did it help having him active today? And if so, how? >> Yeah, totally. Totally. Um, you know, I I felt like I wasn’t out there alone, if that makes sense. Um, but man, I was super fired up that Theo was going to get his opportunity um this week and he did a he did a great job in practice um with the plays that he had up and um you know, he’s a fellow a fellow Dallas guy, so little connection there. It always it always helps for sure when you’re not in it alone. didn’t take a sack today which I thought was proud which I thought was pretty impressive. Just what was working from that standpoint? >> Yeah, you know, I went into it. I mean, there’s there’s a stat out there. I’m not sure what it is, but your your um chances of of scoring a touchdown after a sack significantly dropped. So, I thought it was important to, you know, especially in the first start for me to, you know, go through the progressions, but, you know, obviously the speed of the game is a little bit faster and um get the ball out and throw it away if necessary. How different was the the playbook for you in this start than what Tua normally has? >> I thought it was pretty similar to be honest with you. Um like I’ve hit on in in earlier meetings of ours is you know it’s our job is as as whether we’re the two or the three during the year to be ready for whenever your opportunity is. So, but you know I’m glad that they had the faith in me and the trust in me to continue on that game plan. I’m sure you learned a lot of things that you’ll think about. Anything in particular jump out at you after in minutes right after the game? >> Um, to be honest with you, I thought that we played well as an offense. One of those It’s one of those games where you thought you did a good job, but it just doesn’t translate over to the scoreboard. Like I said, the turnovers are going to do that to you. Um, but man, it’s just what an opportunity and to to get out there on the field with those guys um that we’re just going to we’re just going to build on. >> Questions. >> How does Waller uh how’s Waller as a target? >> Oh, he’s great. He’s great. Um, you know, big body. I feel like if I just put it in over there in his vicinity that he’s going to end up coming down with it. So, it’s always nice to have a guy like that on on third down and then and in the red zone. How many people how many people did you have show up for you at travel to to watch your first start? >> Quite a few, I believe. Um I just gave tickets to my parents and my girlfriend and then I let I let them handle all the rest of themselves. So I know I know there’s quite a few of them though. >> Thank you. >> Thanks guys.
