This ultimately lead to the GWG for Detroit but looked like it should have definitely been a penalty.

Good game last night. A point is a point. We look like a better team overall! Giving the leader of the division a run for their money proves we belong in the mix. Can anyone explain how this wasn’t a trip? Do you need the puck for it to be a tripping penalty?

  1. Matthews initiated the contact and they got tangled up. That’s a really bad call to make especially in OT. No ref is calling that.

2nd question, no you don’t need to be the puck carrier, and that would generally be called interference.

  2. This isn’t the play to be focused on.

Instead of trying to blame the refs let’s actually look internally and realize that Macelli got beat on a simple play and which actually led to the GWG. If He does his job there and actually defend, game would’ve continued.

  3. I really wish they could move Rielly. Need a big change to their defense. I think Rielly is keeping them from progressing in the right direction. He’s a great dude but it’s time to move on from him.

  4. I have seen people talk about who initiated the contact. That’s not a part of the rules. A trip is a trip. A high stick is a high stick. Interference is interference. Intention doesn’t matter. Accident or not, it is what it is. You can’t not call puck over the glass because it was an accident.

The reality is that the ref decided they were not going to call it. Just like earlier in the game when they decided that the Red Wings were going to be on the powerplay after McMann nudging the goalie and then being assaulted by almost all 6 of the Wings on the ice and having his helmet ripped off.

That decision greatly impacted the game.

  5. It’s also blatant interference. Sick of that shit. Sick of the refs managing games and ignoring obvious penalties because they don’t want to feel like they impacted the game. NEWSFLASH: when you allow infractions to go uncalled it affects the game!

  6. If you think that’s a trip, do you also think that Matthews should have received an interference penalty for what he does right before the alleged trip?

Strange how you see one thing and not the other.

  7. Weakest trip. Mathew’s is supposed to be one of the best players in the world, and he goes down that easy. Leafs were diving all over the place last night.

  8. That’s not a trip. Matthews makes first contact, player is barely holding his stick. It’s shit luck.

You’d have a better argument for interference though because it’s a pick.

We frequently get screwed on calls but this isn’t one of them.

  9. So we’re at the point now, as a team and fanbase, where OT losses against a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in 10+ years counts as some kind of moral victory to be celebrated, eh?

    Yay.

  10. The same reason Detroit had a powerplay after Bobby McMann got mauled by every Red Wing on the ice. The league is a joke. Holding the stick?

  11. This doesn’t “prove we belong in the mix.” Weaker teams play well against stronger teams all the time. Until the Leafs consistently beat good teams, they aren’t a good team.

  12. This is some copeium I think. The only thing saving them is number four on down is doing near as bad as they are.

  13. It is a trip. The issue is the jersey Matthews is wearing and it’s getting painfully obvious at this point.
