I've been on a break from watching hockey since Covid. I tried watching a game this past week and just what the fuck man? Why is 60% of the ice full of ads?

After twenty minutes of watching a black puck traveling between 3mph to 100 mph fly across advertisement after advertisement I felt carsick. I don't know how you sickos can watch this uninterrupted for 60minutes of playtime but I respect it.

Edit: I just keep thinking of this clip lmao https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpPE85Jogjw

  1. It’s almost all superimposed for the tv audience, it sucks. When you’re at a game you don’t see any of it.

  2. It’s not cheapening the product. You just don’t like that something has changed and you are projecting your dislike for one particular thing as something it isn’t. Hockey isn’t cheapened because there are ads.

If you haven’t been watching for 5-6 years, maybe your opinion on whether it’s cheapened the product or not isn’t the most valuable. Moreso you just want to have validation that other people also dislike ads.

  3. On the ice, on the jerseys and helmets, the moving screen ads on the boards, the Ozempic Highlights after every play, and the non-stop gambling commercials whenever the announcers take a breath from telling you about betting odds… You get numb to it and just reach for a Brawndo at some point.

Sadly in shareholder eyes the product hasn’t been cheapened, it’s increased in value from what used to be “free real estate”.

The fact now people want the ads stitched on jerseys they buy so it’s “legit” is so wildly depressing

  4. The Ducks got rid of their helmet ads, so that’s a step in the right direction. Like someone else said, it’s better now than it was a few years ago.

  5. None of the ads on the ice, boards or player uniforms bother me at all. I can fully filter them out and they are just background noise.

What drives me nuts are ad breaks and intermissions. Before christmas there was a game i watched that had 2 ad breaks happen within 3 minutes of play from each other on the latter half of a period. You had an ad break after stoppage, then another ad break ~3 minutes later, and then you had 4 and a half minutes of play left in the period before the intermission. Just an insane barrage of shit when i’m trying to watch a hockey game. The constant interruptions are awful, not to mention north american advertisements being batshit insane to my european mind.

  6. So much different than going to a game where ads are plastered on the boards and on the ice and ads play constantly on the jumbotron and between plays and even the PA announcer says things like JMG POWER PLAY… Oh my goodness I just can’t take being a professional sports fan. Time to watch beer league at the local rink where they only have a few ads from local businesses. Give your balls a tug.
