ALARM: Washington Nationals Avoid Major DEALS—Payroll Questions Continue To Come Up

Ryan Clary takes aim at the team’s reluctance to make significant signings, noting every MLB team has handed out a $20 million contract since Washington’s last big spend. He questions whether ownership is playing it smart or risking a “Pirates 2.0” scenario, as teams like the Marlins and Orioles outpace the Nats in free agency. Prospect excitement burns bright with Ryan Clary’s spotlight on Alex Clemmey, a power lefty with breakout potential for 2026. The discussion examines recent roster strategies, struggles with making trades—especially the uncertain status of MacKenzie Gore—and the impact of a new, analytics-focused regime in D.C. Can the Nationals capitalize on their young talent, or will continued caution hold them back? The future of Washington baseball hangs in the balance.

  1. I'm willing to go with the narrative of the new FO needing a season or two to see what they have across the organization but holy crap, as a fan not investing in this team is getting really really old.

  2. The current situation reminds of the movie "Major Leagues" and the Cleveland Indians. Hopefully ownership can afford a new pair of glasses for our future closer.

  3. I want them to follow the formula that worked from 2012 to 2019. Draft and develop well, make savvy trades, and buy a couple of big name free agents.

  4. I think many teams are being tentative going into the CBA with the very likely outcome of a lost 2027 season. This is particularly valid given the massive losses incurred in the pandemic year.
