Nico Hischier was not originally requested to speak to the media tonight, but when the media was waiting for Luke Hughes, he motioned over to them that he’d like to speak, so they turned the camera to Nico. He asked to speak. This is what he said.

  3. There’s a clip of Sidney Crosby shutting down some complaints on his own bench when skme Penguin made a bad mistake. Something like “enough, he knows what he did, he’ll get it next time.”

    Its the easy and obvious thing to say as a captain, but even so, im glad they are rallying around Luke a bit in the locker room.

  4. That right there is true captain shit. You know the media is coming after your teammate, you get in front of it, and you tell them what’s what. There is only one true untouchable in our locker room when it comes to making changes to turn that ship around. That man is 1 of 1.

    Counterpoint, fans have a right to be upset. People pay a lot of money to see these games and don’t wanna see their night get ruined by some peewee-level mistakes. I know he’ll do better but maybe this was an important one for his growth. Boos aren’t the end of the world.

  14. Good, I’m glad the team stands behind Luke, they should be his support system. What I think gets lost in all of this is the booing is not JUST because of those two plays. The crowd didn’t turn on him after the first own-goal.

    Luke continues to demonstrate bad habits and obviously doesn’t learn from them. How many times have we watched him make boneheaded plays, commit completely avoidable turnovers, or take completely unnecessary risks like the play that Taylor Hall made him pay for. The boos are pent up frustration from years of this shit from Luke because he doesn’t learn. And what’s worse, the team doesn’t hold him accountable, either.

    If the booing is what it takes to finally get through to him, then so be it.

  17. I’m happy Nico said something. Since some fans think the have the right to hold the players accountable, I think it’s good the players hold the “fans” accountable too.

  20. Hell yeah Hischier. We’re only humans at the end of the day, even the most skilled people will inevitably make mistakes. Just learn from them, move on, and get stronger for next time. That ability is what ultimately matters most. Booing Luke was annoying and cringe after the first time. He knows what he did wrong and there’s nothing that can change the past so why drag it on?

  23. Just watched Nico’s interview along with Luke’s. Luke sounded like he was on the verge of tears. He knows he messed up. Good on the Cap’n (and Jake) for trying to help him turn the page. Yeah it sucks and I understand the boo’s but we need to move on. Hearing Sheldon explain why he didn’t sit Luke, I now understand where he was coming from.

  24. Good. A captain should defend his teammates and the fans were being kind of shitty. That being said, I hope this sets a fire under Luke’s ass and he goes on a crazy tear

  27. Until the team starts winning and the GM makes trades, fans (100% rightly so) will be mad. Players underperforming  and going 10+ games without a goal is gonna make people angry.

    Regarding Luke, hopefully this will be a bit of a wakeup call. His last name shields him from the consequences that any other young d-man would experience for making the sort of mistakes he has been making all year. I don’t mind when a guy turns the puck over in zone, if there’s a decent reason for it, or even if it was just an attempt at a good play that wasn’t executed right. But too often, he seems completely unaware that the other team’s players also want the puck, and ends up turning it over in a dangerous spot while he’s playing like he has ten seconds to make a play in his own zone. This was just the tipping point for a lot of fans, and I really don’t mind it. Let him hear it for a game since it doesn’t seem like the coach or management are willing to slap his wrist at all, even when his play warranted time in the minors.

    That being said, it shouldn’t continue next game.

  30. He’s the best and our fans are assholes. I understand a boo or two, but he’s not the reason we lost. We lost because we had zero offensive coordination and squandered 3 POWERPLAYS in a row. One or two of those go in and it’s a completely different game and the other mistake doesn’t even happen. Get over yourselves and look at the big picture

  32. You could hear the boos on TV just made me sad. I get the frustration but be better than that. He’s one of our best players, he had a bad game. Pick the guy up don’t bury him in boos

  33. Good for Nico but let’s be clear. If Luke’s last name wasnt Hughes he wouldnt even be on this team. Hes been a liability his whole career. The kid isnt all that good. Miss me with the “hes still young” nonsense. Youre in the show bud, gotta preform

  34. Honestly it’s good that Nico said this but it rings hollow b/c we all know that there will be zero consequences. Luke should sit the next game. You can’t fuck up that badly twice and expect to suit up next time but the organization bends over backwards for the Hughes family and tbh I’m a bit sick of it b/c the best of them by a mile is the one in Minnesota. Jack is soft as tissue paper ;an injury waiting to happen and Luke is coasting on his family name to the tune of 9 million per right now.
