[Goldman] Chiefs HC Andy Reid on what went wrong in 2025: “We had 10 or so games that were decided by 7 points or less… you’ve got to really evaluate those and the whys of that… The end of the game drives that you could’ve scored on or were scored on… We’ve got to narrow that up…”

That’s a lot of words to say exactly nothing.
“Andy, will you be reevaluating the reluctance to go under center in 3rd and 2 situations?”
Maybe stop letting them convert on every single 3rd and 12
If Big Red doesn’t see the problems then we are gonna have even more issues going forward. Someone needs to pull him aside and give him some tough love about his outdated offense that just doesn’t work anymore.
I REALLY hope they don’t go into this offseason with this ideology that they were close. Every freaking play was a struggle. They aren’t close. They have Mahomes who makes the most out of this offense and roster. This quote concerns me especially given that Reid is stubborn and doesn’t change.
Up until about halfway through the season it felt like we were a sleeping giant. Bad breaks, choking on drives to win games, and critical bad calls all seemed to go against us resulting in losses in every close game. Then, even before Mahomes went out it started to feel like there were real scheme and personnel issues. Play calling was unbelievably predictable. Once Mahomes went down it was obvious how much of a band aid he was for the offense.
Honestly believe the offensive coaching staff needs an overhaul. We probably need to draft lineman again. Its probably time to drop some expensive contracts and just consider next year a reloading year. Securing a strong o-line and strong d-line will give Mahomes another Superbowl window in his career. Focus on that and hope you draft well at skill positions in the later rounds.
Narrow that up?
Woah did someone in PR say to him. “Andy your phrase of clean it up has really been p!$$ing people off. Got to stop saying that.”
Andy – “I’ve got it.”
Call me crazy but I thought the issue was that games were close because we played like shit. Then, in moments that mattered, players would commit untimely penalties, take plays off, or coaches would call tremendously inappropriate plays.
This is such a terrible response man not even joking. People are nonchalant about this year thinking it’s a one off but this was objectively a terrible year and not in “oh we just missed the playoffs bad” no we were nothing to play for in the last 4 weeks bad.
And as much as I want nagy gone Thats not solely on him there’s a lot to fix and a lot of parts to move because if it doesn’t we will be in the same position next year and none of response this year from Andy seem think that’s the case/understand that
And maybe Andy does understand that he just isn’t saying it publicly but I feel the fans need a little more than this at the least
I’m sorry if this is bad to say and I know he’s never been one to over share with the media but I don’t know I feel like he’s aged ten years in the past two. So many of the teams flaws covered up by Mahomes and we are supposed to pretend we don’t see it.
I try telling people: Andy isn’t changing and he doesn’t think there’s any serious problem with his staff, scheme, or coaching philosophy.
The end of his time in KC is likely going to be ugly. That’s just historically how these things go.
Unfortunately sounds more optimistic about the current process than I’d like to hear. **Just tune some things**
Hopefully more critical behind the scenes, but I don’t really trust that right now. The truth is that mahomes masked a lot of the flaws in Reid’s playbook, which is designed to outwit rather than use the player’s skillsets. He should be evaluating the complexity of his system and actual skills of his guys going into next year.
On the other side Spags needs to figure out 3rd down. Ideally with a shiny new toy that can actually get to the QB would help there.
How many games were decided by one score in 2024? This could have easily been two marginal seasons in a row.
All i got to say is that im just tired that EVERY single game is close. Division games, i get it. Games against contenders, i get it. but my god, we NEVER blow out teams anymore. not since Tyreek left. the Offense is stale, no run game so defenses only gameplan for Pat and the Defense can be good but is inconsistent and has zero pass rush.
Also, not sure if anybody else noticed, but the Offense and Defense never play well on the same day. its either the offense is cooking or the defense is. I just want something easy every now and then. and i feel like that doesnt happen because the moment Andy gets a 1 point lead, he dives into his Weenie Hut Jr. playbook instead of just calling the damn game
His answers really scare me. I don’t want to go into this offseason thinning it was bad luck or injuries or lack of execution that was the issue.
The truth is this team had a lot of fundamental problems that need to be addressed both with new players and new staff:
The offense has no running game whatsoever and it makes it impossible to be a consistent offense as a result.
The offense has no WRs that can beat man coverage and nether Xavier Worthy nor Rashee Rice have shown a single iota of development. Worthy looks like a complete waste of a roster spot. Conner Embree needs to be gone.
I’m absolutely fucking done hearing how supposedly great our individual OLinemen are only to see shit tier run blocking and Pat constantly running for his life. Andy Heck needs to be gone
The defense has absolute dogshit for pass rush. At some point the team has to find a speed rusher that can get quick pressure. Given the resources poured into pass rush, the results are beyond unacceptable. Whoever the D Line coach is needs to be gone.
The special teams were actual football terrorists all year. Penalties on damn near every play, missed kicks, kicks out of bounds, dogshit coverage, dogshit returns. Dave Toub better be far the hell away from this team next year, because his unit was actual fucking flaming hot garbage
The young talent on this team is either not developing or not being used. I’m so fucking sick of hearing how “complicated the system is” and watching garbage veterans like Conner, Edwards & Pacheco get snaps over vastly more talented guys like N Williams, Hicks & B Smith. For as complicated as the system is, the results suck so maybe make it more accessible for our new / young guys…
The first era of Mahomes is over. It’s time to retool and reimagine the team for the second half of his career. Chasing the past and refusing to evolve will only end in more seasons just like this past one.
I’m happy to give Andy a pass on one bad season. But if he tries to “run it back” next year and there’s another missed playoffs he needs to be encouraged to retire. This team has only found the unicorn QB once, there can be zero tolerance for wasting any years of it
Zero tonsils tickled with that answer.
Andy seems to be focusing on positives that most of us just aren’t seeing at the moment. Yeah, the scores for a lot of the games were close, but realistically it wasn’t like last year where it felt like we had a chance in every game. This season felt so much more difficult in the sense that we didn’t look like we could close out any of those games.
This kinda reminds me of Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. Carlo is also an absolutely brilliant manager and extremely successful, but towards the end of his tenure at Madrid, his comments didn’t really reflect what was actually happening on the pitch. He seemed lost and out of it. I’m not saying the same will happen with Andy, but I’m not really positive for next season – my first time feeling this since I started watching football.
As a relatively new Chiefs fan (2018 onwards), Andy is all I’ve known. I see a lot of criticism for Matt Nagy, but surely a lot of what happened this season rests on Andy too? I really hope he’s able to turn it around.
To me there were too many screw ups that lead to those mad scrambles to score points at the end. Drops, stupid plays, no running threat, screen plays that never work anymore, penalties, no real ability to beat man coverage, teams being able to predict plays based on personnel, etc. It’s not really that they did everything okay except those final drives.
Yeah, you might technically win if you get lucky at the last second. But a complete team would comfortably be able to win all of those games.
Very generic response. I would like to get into specifics of how he/we do not have a running game. How that adds to the burden on Pat where he is your second leading rusher and all this can lead to injuries. How our receivers are not that good (bad coaching perhaps?). How we rarely give our rookies a shot in games until something catastrophic happens.
This year was on the offense and the play calling. Coaching changes also need to be discussed.
This practically is the worst-case statement from him. It’s borderline delusional.
Our offense was not fun to watch, there was zero explosiveness, everything just looked so *hard* for our team compared to the other good teams I watched.
I know a lot of that has to do with our complete lack of a run game, but some of it also has to do with scheme, and opposing teams knowing exactly what we were doing before the ball was snapped. Andy is smart enough to see that. There will be changes next year whether he’ll admit it or not, I just hope it’s enough. For now, I’ll have faith in the coach who’s helped take us to 5 Super Bowls in 6 years.
And water is wet.
Copy paste my comment from the daily thread:
You’re never going to hear in-depth answers from a coach, especially Reid, the master at the non-answer.
No coach is going to openly diagnose for the public exactly how other teams’ game plans beat them. No coach is going to throw players (or coaches) under the bus who made game-losing mistakes or decisions. And no coach is going to openly discuss their strategic plans for the draft, the offseason, or the following season’s games.
Not sure why this is confusing to people.
If Andy can’t accept that the rest of the league has caught up to (or surpassed) him, next year is going to be more of the same.
Maybe the play calling is what needs to change Andy idk look in the mirror dude. Also let’s face the harsh honest truth, this team has become complacent with no discipline and are probably exhausted after 3 straight Super Bowl appearances and 5 total in their run. They’ve played a full seasons worth in the playoffs. They needed a reset and they got it. Now it’s up to you to make the changes necessary.
Old man refuses to change. Water is wet.
how about not waiting to the end of the game to make the scoring plays? maybe like, all through the whole game instead? that sounds nice.
It’s all on Andy, but try to say that here, and the sub turns into Shaq, “He won three rings! Google him!”
To complicate matters, this record was against a very mediocre NFL season with no great / dominant teams.
Translation: nothing will change in the off-season.
They need to look at the games they played without Mahomes. That’s the real Chiefs right now.
Let’s be real. The egos of the WR corps is the reason why. EGE but none of the WRs are actually productive or useful. There is no EGE. It’s Travis and friends.
Reid scheme is the issue. It has been for 3 seasons now.
It also why i say assuming Nagy is gone, who is this sub’s Reid apologists going to blame if we see a repeat of the last two seasons?
Im not advocating for Reid to retire or be let go. I want him to put the league on notice again & he deserves at least the 2026 seasons to right the ship, but if he doesn’t… well this franchise will have to move on because whats to stop Mahomes from saying ive had enough especially after experiencing a career altering injury and demand a trade if the same shit keeps getting thrown at him.
I’m really starting to think Reid is losing his mind. Early onset dementia or something. Reid made some of the dumbest decisions imaginable this season, and he keeps saying they are close.
They were not close. They are a straight ass offensive team, that’s been kept afloat by a QB that can run around and make things happen out of thin air.
This is why my main concern right now is whether or not Andy/the rest of the coaching staff are absorbing the reality of the situation or if they are in denial.
This has always been like a top 3 gripe for me with Andy Reid. His entire philosophy is built around the idea that you start fast and get touchdowns in the first half to get a lead and then you just try to drain clock and force field goals for the second half. But he refuses to drain clock by running the ball, opting instead for little screens and short passes and other conservative shit.
And yes, it has MOSTLY worked during his career but if you don’t have an elite defense it sure as hell makes way harder than they need to be on the offense because almost every game will force them to turn it on late to prevent a collapse.
The real problem is that we had a lot of similar games last year that we won instead of losing but because we made it to the Super Bowl no one on the team seemed to recognise it or try to address it. Now thee same thing happens this year and they’re all surprised pikachu face about it.
It’s the same team (maybe with slightly worse defence and special teams), our luck just evened out. Mahomes with even an average offence around him should not be this close in games or struggling to string plays together and get down the field.
I really wish this year had happened last year and they’d got some draft picks and made some changes, instead of ending up in a Super Bowl we had no business being in.
2nd in the league in dropped passes. That’s a coaching issue. Hope they are honest with themselves.
The buffalo game is one of the ones I’d circle for the coaching staff to dissect.
The offense just felt painful and abyssmal that game against a team that had a very middle to bad run defense. Plus it was apparent and even stated by one of their rookies that they knew what was coming because of xavier worthy’s body positioning. That is the kind of crap that needs cleaned up, especially because every game it felt defenses knew what we were going to run offensively and could sit on routes
If Andy jogs out that team again next year, we are having serious conversations about moving on from andy
