  1. Nicos power isnt what concerns me…Nicos chase rate and not walking…AND relying too much on batting average, is what scarea me about Hoerner.

  2. And how exactly is this guy a top end starter? The Cubs have done nothing this offseason, and my expectations for this team are to win 80 game or less and miss the playoffs

  3. Numbers: Using FanGraphs and Spotrac data and assuming a minimum amount allocated to the final three spots on the 40-man, I estimate that the Cubs have $222.8 million committed against the luxury tax cap. That leaves $21.2 million or 9% below the cap. Judging from how the team spent in past years it seems like this level is where Jed wants to start the year – leaving capacity to make in-season and trade deadline moves.

I took a look at the largest Cubs contracts during the Ricketts era. The most the team has paid has been around 6x the league average. For example, Lester got $155 million over 6 years at a time when the league average was around $4.4 million. The AAV was 5.9x that league average. Swanson was 5.1x, Stroman got 5.0x, Heyward 5.2x. In 2025 the league average was $5.16 million – let's say that will be $5.2 million in 2026. Using Ricketts' history as a guide, that suggests he would authorize no more than $31 million/year for a major star or $26 million/year for a very good player. And now that there's only $21 million to go under the cap I think there's no way he picks up Bregman based on AAV. He'd have to move a large salary off to go after Bichette (only Swanson, Boyd, Imanaga, and Hoerner don't have no-trade clauses and are large enough to make a difference).

Other than adding three more cheap relievers I think this is the team we'll be taking to Spring Training.
