William Contreras, the lone Brewer to not reach a deal before the deadline[Curt Hogg]

  1. People get mad at the brewers for this but this is the system. It’s not based on worth in the open market. If it was, Contreras would file for 30 mil. The brewers pick a number based on past arbitrations, Contreras picks a number, and someone says who is right.

Put out a number too high? The arbitrator will pic the the low one. Put a number too low? Arb will side with the player. No team blindly gives the player what he files at. I think it’s such an awful system because it inherently disrespects the player and forces the team to justify their number, but that isn’t the brewers problem, it’s baseballs.

  2. And you know the Brewers will take it to arbitration rather than split the difference which will piss off Contreras so much that he doesn’t resign with the Brewers when he becomes a free agent

  3. That’s kind of a big difference, hopefully the Brewers win which seems likely…?

  4. Ngl 8.55 is more than fair.

Will smith was a better catcher at that age and MIL is offering him what he got.

  5. Reminder that they can still settle before the hearing so please wait before we all start getting in our feels on either side.

  6. I think had he been healthy all season and produced this would have been a no brainer

  7. Based on the comps, which is how this works, I can’t imagine why WC’s agents would file so high above the current record for a catcher in his spot. This seems like an easy choice for arbitrator with the Brewers only needing to point to the Will Smith number and not need to get into negative numbers for WC, etc

  8. Super small difference in numbers and Contreras is probably going to lose here. It doesn’t really change much going forward though.

  9. Can’t even throw him a bone and come in at $9 mil flat? It’s fucking $500k. Come on man. This dumb ass shit is not worth it.
