I never understood that……even if all the owners were holding back…..how can they be FORCED to bid on free agents? If I own a team and didn’t want to bid, I’m not bidding. And it can’t be proven that I withheld because the others did.
Owners learned their lesson from this one and started paying off the unions as part of the collusion
Steinbrenner had an offer ready for Carlton Fisk but rescinded it when Reinsdorf bellyached about it.The owners weren’t too subtle about their collusion.
