I've been thinking about the reports that Marte and the Mets would both like a reunion. For me personally, I for one am all for that reunion, but it seems a good portion of the fandom is not. I think Marte played his role very well last year, hit very well for average, had some homers, and was really the team leader last year despite not being an everyday player. I know people might not like him being a posisble pivot option for Tucker/Bellinger, which I understand, but I think there's always the chance you can still have one of Tucker/Bellinger and keep Marte as a bench guy. You might be thinking with Acuna's recent quite unprecedented displays of power in Venezuela that it might end up being hard to not put him on thw opening day roster, and to that say, once more, you can maybe have both Acuna and Marte on the bench. I think if the Mets put some potential starters in the bullpen this year (Peterson, Sproat, Tong, Scott), then you can possibly afford to go with a 14/12 ratio of hitters to pitchers. Should the Mets get Tucker or Bellinger or even just any other OF starter, then you can still have a bench of Marte, Acuna, Torrens, Mauricio, Taylor/Benge.

He’s a one tool player at this point, and that tool isnt even that good. In fact, his best attribute is being Juan Soto’s friend.
If that’s what you believe our bench will look like, we may as well pack it up now.
Would love him back… as a coach of some capacity
I think a lot of people are biased against him because his contract was way too high last year. If you can bring him back on a salary of a couple million dollars I feel like it’s a no brainer
He’s just too limited at this point in his career. If this roster is supposed to be about limiting runs through defense I just don’t see how he fits in. He’s a DH with limited power.
I like the guy, and I think he’s been a solid Met, but I just don’t see how he fits into the plans right now and going forward.
because his balls are down there
I like him he is our captain
There unfortunately isn’t much point of signing a RHB platoon DH. He would be clogging up a roster spot which could be put to better use which is pretty much what he did last year. He doesn’t serve enough of a purpose on a contending major league roster
Old
But he’s a good guy.
They don’t like his confusing haircut from last season
Can we sign him as a non roster vibes guy for the bench?
I mean if trade vientos and need a right handed bench bat, sure. But Marte is old. He isn’t getting any better and I’d prefer more than a .750 ops from my offensive only right handed bat. He’s really not a good piece to have from a roster construction standpoint
People are low on Starling because they don’t know ball.
my man is 37 years old…
although we just traded brandon nimmo for a 36 year old who hits .230, so what the hell, i’m in
He can’t play the field. Ever since the London series he’s been unplayable out there. I like him as a player and person but we need players that can play the field.
Way passed his prime and he takes up a roster spot which is valuable. Doesn’t defend well at all, so you’d be looking at an average at best bat to fill your DH spot and take reps away from other younger better players. I’d be surprised if he’s back
He’s often injured and old.
He’s slow (43rd percentile sprint speed in 2024, 28th percentile last year. Injuries and age are only going to make that go lower.)
He can’t field. He has less range than Juan Soto.
He doesn’t really walk, he doesn’t really slug. He doesn’t really work the count. He’s a RH platoon DH singles hitter. Using a bench spot on a guy with one meh skill who can’t field or pinch run is pretty terrible roster management.
He can’t play the field, and that’s basically a non-starter for me for a roster spot.
His platoon splits aren’t awful, so he could be a useful DH, but we already have Vientos — who also can’t play the field. Carrying two non-fielding bats, especially if one is a platoon DH, is a poor use of roster spots.
So it really comes down to who you’d rather have at DH. I’d take Vientos. He’s younger, his ceiling is higher, and I think 2024 Vientos is probably close to the best version we’ll ever see — and even that version is better than Marte’s ceiling.
In a perfect world, Polanco is our DH, Vientos is traded to a team that doesn’t have a problem with his profile at DH and fetches a decent return, and we get a real 1B from somewhere. The problem is that there just aren’t that many great options in free agency and who knows what via trade.
Because he’s washed up. It would make zero sense to bring him back, he can’t play the outfield, can’t be relied on to be healthy, and can pretty much only DH when there’s better options. Essentially a waste of a roster spot. And this whole winter was about tearing down the core who won nothing, he was very much a part of it
I like Marte, but he doesn’t belong on the field, and his bat is too underwhelming to play at DH.
It’s not that people are low, guy had a solid career. But he’s cooked.
He clogs up the roster. I’m not a fan of anyone who does that in baseball
I love Marte. He’s a great guy and was a solid player. But he is past his time and wouldn’t add much value anymore.
Haters gonna hate GIVE UNC ANOTHER YEAR IN QUEENS ❤️
I like Marte, but I think the issue is that Mets are keeping him in a role he can’t fulfill. In his prime he’s an all-star, but at this point of his career he’s a great clubhouse guy and a professional at bat in the order. Objectively, he’s injury prone at this point. His fielding is really diminished. His range is much smaller and his base running also is down because he isn’t as fast consistently.
In short. Great guy, but I’m not sure he’s good enough as a pure hitter to keep around as a DH, and he also isn’t an elite fielder to keep around as a defensive replacement, so what’s his role? Maybe a platoon outfielder (if he can stay on the field)
The best ability is availability
If Marte is willing to come back on a cheap contract because he really likes the team and has already gotten his bag, while the team is honest about his potential playing time and possibility of being replaced by someone like Benge if he starts off hot, then I’m not opposed to it. He looked good at the plate last year and was good in pinch hitting situations, which is likely where he would be used for 200 or so at bats over the course of the season in a best case scenario for him next year (more likely it would be closer to 100). Maybe they can work out a deal where they offer him that and a potential coaching role within the organization the following year if he’s interested in doing that. That might be enough to sway him to sign on a borderline league minumum for the year.
He’s not really capable of playing the field, but could shoestring him in RF for 10-15 games if needed, but otherwise takes up a roster spot. There’s a reason other teams haven’t been reaching out to him for cheap deals either, because they know he’s largely just a bat at this point, and an only slightly above average one.
Love him though. His 2022 season was a great example of what most of his career was when at his peak, and why he deserved the contract. Last year was a testament to his professionalism and ability to rebound after a pretty rough 2024.
Still think it’s time to move on though with all of that said.
Why are people so low on a DH with a middling bat entering his age 37 season? Idk how you couldn’t be. He’s probably best deployed as a small-side platoon DH, every model projects him to be about a league average bat, which is not very good at DH, and he’s in the teeth of the aging curve where guys fall off a cliff at any moment. So you have to use a roster spot on him with that profile and obviously no options. If he gets signed at all I’d expect it to be with a second division team.
I’d be happy to have him on the coaching staff in some capacity. Seems like a good dude and the players (Soto) like him. But using a roster spot on him would be nuts. If you’re genuinely asking this question then there’s a very fundamental disconnect between how you think about baseball and how this FO is going to think about baseball. And that’s fine, be a fan however you want. But you may find yourself very confused by how they’re evaluating players going forward.
As a DH he put some good at bats together last season. But this is what I’ll remember him for:

hes old. otherwise most people love him. he cant play the field which sucks. the couple times he did last year it hurt him fairly noticeably
