I might be doomer but I'll be happy just to get to the playoffs next season

  1. They’ve had this problem for some time, including last season that blocked Roman from getting on the field earlier. They had the all star break to move pieces for additions the team needed, and the off season to make a deal to offload one or more. Just blatant incompetency from this front office

  2. Trying to “win” every transaction is the problem.

If you have a surplus, you might not get the perfect return on value because teams know you need to move that player.

Same with free agency. Trying to win every contract signed prevents us from signing guys because other orgs are willing to bite the bullet and take on a bad year or two at the end of a deal.

The only moves we make are what ownership and Breslow see as potential wins.

  3. I don’t think the Red Sox FO views 4 outfielders + Yoshida as a “problem” the way this sub does. Anthony, Abreu, and Yoshida all missed significant time last year due to injury
and I think the org likes the depth. And they’re not the type of franchise that trades guys away for pennies on the dollar just for the sake of trading them.

And I dunno how you can say Gray/Contreras aren’t improvements over Giolito and Lowe. They obviously still need to replace Bregman’s production but they’ve improved the positions they acquired. And the Red Sox have always been a team that is going to see its biggest improvements from developments out of their young players. Over half of their lineup is guys in their first few seasons (Anthony, Abreu, Rafaela, Narvaez, Mayer – plus guys like Casas/Campbell).

  4. I think Contreras is an upgrade at first and I think Gray will be good. That being said i think they operated like Bregman was a certainty to come back and those moves would be better with him in the mix. Now they’re out in the cold on that one and have to scramble.

  5. I still don’t get why it’s a bad thing to have 4/5 outfielders 🙄. Up until losing Bregman, the Sox got better this offseason.

  6. The problem with this mentality is you’re assuming your chief rivals haven’t improved when they likely have. Truth is the Sox have the financial power to add not one big contract but two and instead sucker the statistician hobbyists into thinking they’re getting it right – cept they have hardly been in the conversation since 2018 with a top 3-5 top line. Sorry – that’s just poor personnel management and there’s no way around it.

  7. Gray and Contreras make the team better, though maybe not as good as you’d hope.

You get a lot of OFs because players in the minors were ready for the bigs and they happen to be outfielders. Yoshida is the only one there that didn’t come up through the system. Maybe we need to develop infielders better. Why did KC come through all levels playing 2B/SS and now we suddenly give up on him there?

  8. (non redsox fan) Surely you have to consider trading yoshida and eating all the salary just to get him off the roster? He’s absolutely awful and offers negative roster flexibility while blocking your legitimately good players from getting time

  9. Yoshida and prospect low level for Nolan makes sense. They can sign Suarez after that. I think cards would accept deal if it’s a low level prospect. Yoshida owed I think 37,200 million and Nolan is owed 42 million so basically wash. The Red Sox can say we will make this trade if willing to give us 5 million. Thoughts?

  10. Until opening day I refuse to allow the current roster get me upset. There’s still 2 months to right the ship

  11. Fear not, the Red Sox have been clever and have a bunch of money coming off the books next offseason. So while this team may or may not make the playoffs this year I truly believe next year is the year John Henry will be able to make even more money.

  12. Every trade Breslow has made us pretty clearly a good trade that makes us better.

Good enough? I don’t think so
