  1. This interview feels less like genuine mutual interest and more like box-checking. McDaniels has been through enough cycles to know how this works: if you’re even remotely on the market, you take the interview, you smile, you say the right buzzwords, and you keep your name warm. Detroit interviewing him tomorrow looks like a process move, not a direction-setting one, and McDaniels knows that. He’s not coming in desperate to build something; he’s coming in to say, ā€œSee? I’m still in demand.ā€

Timing matters. If McDaniels truly viewed Detroit as a serious long-term fit, this wouldn’t feel rushed or transactional. Interviews that lead to real alignment usually stretch, evolve, and deepen. This one feels like it’s being wrapped up quickly so both sides can say they did their due diligence. That’s not how you hire someone to shape the future of a franchise — that’s how you satisfy optics.

There’s also the resume reality. McDaniels’ NFL track record outside of a very specific environment hasn’t exactly screamed adaptability or growth. When someone with that history suddenly re-enters the interview circuit, it’s fair to ask whether they’re actually chasing the right opportunity or just trying to reset perception. A short, clean interview in Detroit helps him more than it helps the Lions.

From Detroit’s side, this risks being the kind of interview that looks responsible but quietly undermines what they claim to value. The Lions have leaned heavily into culture, accountability, and organic buy-in. McDaniels is a system-centric coach with a history of friction when he doesn’t control everything. That mismatch doesn’t disappear because of one well-rehearsed interview.

The biggest tell is urgency — or lack of it. There’s no sense that McDaniels is saying, ā€œThis is the place I want to be.ā€ It feels more like, ā€œLet’s get this done, keep my name circulating, and move on.ā€ That’s fine for him. It’s not fine for a team that can’t afford to treat leadership hires like rĆ©sumĆ© exchanges.

If Detroit comes out of this saying, ā€œWe had a great conversation,ā€ that doesn’t mean progress. It means they talked. The danger is mistaking availability and experience for alignment and intent. And if this interview is more about McDaniels staying relevant than the Lions getting better, that’s how franchises end up repeating cycles instead of breaking them.

  2. A minor concern. With Goff unable to make them deep shots may affect his play design. Not saying he’s not able to adjust, but that’s kind of his bread and butter. Threat with the deep pass, opens up middle and the running game.

  3. Brad may be very flawed but signing McDaniel for the bag would prove he has some marbles.
This happens after him bragging it be a great thing to be OC of Lions, did Dan or Brad listen??

  4. Be careful. Hate can be very detrimental to your physical health, and it is beginning to seem like your hatred for Ben Johnson is getting to that unhealthy level.

  5. McDaniel is covering his tracks taking this interview. The top OC makes 3 million. McDaniel as a HC will absolutely make 10 – 15 million. If any of these 5 other teams don't hire him, which I highly doubt, we will get him. Money talks.

  6. Why would he settle for the Lions OC job when he could land another head coaching job? Especially if Campbell May still call the plays which would point to an inexperienced OC being hired, probably an in house candidate, which means another year of futility

  7. ben johnson, rightly so, is putting HIS team above everything.
personally, i LOVE that attitude. he gave us one more year while waiting for the right opportunity.
you sound like a bitter ex who got left for someone better.
we have to rise to the challenge rather than gossip like a teenage girl.

  8. McDaniel can't take a dirty diaper and turn it into a pineapple. That is what it would be with Atlanta, Tennessee, Cleveland and the Ravens are souring there relationship with Lamar.

  9. Man Syndicate, it would be nice if it happened. No scratch that, when it happens. Let’s speak it into existence. It’s the best opportunity for him amid opportunities given. Also bring in Brian Flores to make our defense as formidable as the Texans. Do those things and we can win the Superbowl.

  10. Mike made the modern-day Scott Mitchell (Tua) look capable most of the time, so I know he will be a great fit here…. I would not let him leave the facility!

  11. Hi good sir, can you please make us a video of the Lions mock draft and what would you suggest and like for us to draft in the upcoming 2026 NFL draft

  12. Ben Johnson stayed 2 extra years I don’t see the snake thing. Folks were pointing to the Eagles and Packers as what Brad Holmes should be doing. I respectfully disagree. The Niners proved that you can out scheme an opponent with back up players. Lions just need world class coordinators to get back to glory.
