  1. Im pretty sure this guy’s is a nothing burger. But what can you expect when you have to pay like 22 mil to get rid of him

  2. It’s highly unlikely he’ll amount to much.

Getting literally anything in return for Arenado is pretty good so… meh.

  3. This is a terrible trade. STL pays 31 of the 42 million left on Arenado contract and all the get is a pitcher that was drafted in the 8th round that hasn’t pitched in the minors and had a 5+ era in college.

  4. I will withhold any judgment on jack martinez until kyle reis tells me how to feel about him

  5. Anybody upset by this trade clearly hasn’t watched the last 2 seasons. This is not MVP-caliber Arenado anymore.

  6. Oof not that I was expecting much, but to eat all that money and get a lowly prospect like this is a little disappointing.

  7. Jack Martinez had 110 strike outs in 77.1 innings at Arizona State last year. His SO/9 was 12.80, which was 13th best in D1. First place? Liam Doyle.

No idea if it will work out for Martinez, but Bloom’s direction seems to be coming a bit more into focus.

  8. This is exactly the trade that it was always going to be. After it’s all said and done, the Arenado trade tree was a fairly fruitful one for us. Gave up nothing we’d miss–Gomber is probably the best thing we let go of there–and in return got about 2.5 seasons of a hall of fame caliber third baseman doing hall of fame caliber third baseman shit.

I don’t know who Martinez is. Probably nobody. The real return on this trade is whatever salary relief we have.

I’m not wild about having Gorman be the full time 3b now, but it’s the right move.

  9. Martinez was Arizona State’s Saturday starter last year. 77 IP in 15 starts. The allure for him is his 12.8K/9. He started out D3 and worked his ass of to be an 8th round pick, so if we have any kind of pitching development system, I suspect he’ll be all in on it. I can see him slotting in as a hard-throwing middle reliever at some point, but he’s going to need better command.

  10. Watched some tape. I actually like him. Really good changeup. Sells it beautifully with ideal (15 mph) difference from fastball to slider. Good velocity on fastball.

    Delivery is max effort.

I’ve got eighth inning guy written down for him, if he can figure stay up/down and around the zone. Fastball is too straight down the middle. I think he could pound the top of the zone and not many guys will catch up.

    Edit: changeup, not slider.

  11. Next year we will be out from the $50ish million we are spending on guys to not be here. We can shop for outside help to fill holes we see from this season. Especially if there is a salary floor and we have to spend more.
