  1. Hey DK I really appreciated the deep dive this morning and I agree with your sentiments, the world favors the prepared, so let’s get there ! Good stuff as always !

  2. Everyone has an opinion but the reality is that most aren't well thought out. The combination of Khan and Weidl is a very progressive way to approach demanding GM duties and the team is way ahead of their peers. Genius move by Mr. Rooney though I would agree with you DK that a bigger staff and a much better staff overall is needed. But don't blame Tomlin for not having a plan after Ben. I remember how much Tomlin liked Dak Prescott in the 2016 predraft evaluations. Twenty four picks ahead of Dak the Steelers select a hard-hitting SS unlikely to ever be a starter in Miles Killebrew.

  3. Anyone who thinks Tomlin wasn't a great coach is delusional. Was it time to move on? Absolutely, but don't let that cloud the fact that he helped push that late 2000s team to 2 Super Bowls and was a fumble away from winning both. It bothers me that Steelers fans think Tomlin was only good because "he had Cowhers players". That is such a stupid and lame excuse.

  4. Great segment, Ive been wanting to say if you watched the hard knock series last year, they pulled the curtain back on something Tomlin did not want to take part in. Why? I will use the best Tomlinism i can think of " the secret is their is no secret ". He was talking about defending open blades of grass, and other things that made no sense. And if you watched My opinion is they had minkah Fitzpatrick in those coaching meetings. They ruined him with taking his instincts away from playing the game and playing 20 yards in the back watching blades of grass in the wind! Mike T is great leader of men, but time has passed him by, it was time for change and lets embrace it, and do it the steeler way once again.

  5. J1Q: I seem to remember in the offseason that you said it seemed like Tomlin was going “all-in” on this season, especially from a roster construction basis.

Then, the Rodgers contract details hinted at that (highly incentivized toward playoff success)

Then, the Cam Heyward contract hold in was resolved by incentives for playoff success

Do you think there was a conversation last offseason which came down to the Steelers need to win in the playoffs or we won’t pickup the 2027 option?

That would make Tomlin a lame duck coach, which no one wants. Tough conversations were had with Noll and Cowher before they retired/resigned

I don’t think Tomlin woke up Tuesday AM and said that’s it. As we all know, he’s well compensated 😂

  6. DK, thank you for this episode. I could never quite articulate my thoughts to people on why the Steelers would win games they shouldn’t and lose games they were overwhelming favorites. Your explanation was logical and poignant. I will refer people to this episode.

  7. Was listening to some Pittsburgh sports radio yesterday, post Tomlin release. Was absolutely disgusted at the fact that even after he stepped down these clowns on the radio did nothing but continue to talk about the negative. I think we all know it was time for this to happen. But now that it has, we should be doing nothing but giving Mike Tomlin his flowers. It wasn't always perfect. But we had something most NFL fan bases would kill for. And for that we should be nothing but grateful.

  8. John Gruden won SB in TB with Tony Dungy’s team as MT won a SB with Bill Cowher’s team! FACTS!!! Tomlin kept his head just above water drafting in the bottom third for his tenure! He did more with less but still not good enough!!!!

  9. I agree with everything you said DK! BTW , where TF is #88? MT ego was the fuggin problem!!! Glad he’s gone, I was done wasting my time on the Steelers, looking forward to something different!

  10. The Rooneys dropped the ball with tomlin kept giving him bandaid for big cuts. He coached with what they gave him. Wasted time now this franchise is doomed for next 5 years. If lucky

  11. Your shows are always great but this one was an absulte CUT ABOVE! this is without a doubt the best, most fair and accurate analysis of Coach T anyone could do.

  12. I think Tomlin would be thought of more fondly by the fanbase if he would have stepped down 5 years ago. I think he could take over a ready made team and have success, I do not think he could build a team from scratch.

  13. I would say that I’ll miss Tomlin for his sense of humor leadership, but I won’t miss his inabilities to change and take chances when needed. That’s something that had been going on for far too long.

  14. DK I want to know when did this fanbase change into caring more about a coach instead of the Steelers franchise? Tomlin had a lot of personal success, but the franchise did not due to the lack of Super Bowl status. Thanks and appreciate the show!

  15. This is probably the best and most complete assessment of the Tomlin era I have ever read or heard. You, sir, touched on every issue and nailed it. Thank you.

  16. Tomlin was a good coach. But his failure was not accepting his mistakes and making adjustments when he was wrong. Also his evaluation of draft picks was poor

  17. I'm totally happy that Art II wasn't pressured or bullied into releasing him! It gives me hope that in spite of his father being the one that hired these past 3 coaches, that he'll do fine hiring the next coach.

  18. To one of the best to do it HOF Coach Mike Tomlin, i appreciate the efforts that you put in this organization for nineteen years.
A victim of your own success, you win enough to have a good seasons, but you didn't lose enough to get booed out earlier.

Damn If you do damn , if you don't , you can't win for losing.

Boy , some of you fans go get what you asked for. SMH

  19. Big question after the new HeadCoach is chosen. Who will pick the coordinators. Mike Florine and Chris Simms over at NBC. Are saying Tomlin was never able to pic his own. They are saying Rooney takes charge of that. DK you are closer to the Team then they. What’s your take on that ?

  20. DK you hit the nail on the head. He could push those buttons on the players. Problem is he should have never had to do it. Players need that internal voice telling them that not the coach.

  21. The gift Tomlin got was a great team given to him in a very week division. Browns and Bengals was an automatic 4 wins a year. Had Tomlin been a coach in a good division his never had a losing season would have been gone years ago.

  22. I think Tomlin was the perfect hire at the time, the SB proves it. The game has just changed so much the last 15 years. Hines Ward rule, coverage rules, tackling rules, the general schematic evolution and differences in college game growing. I think he still had a lot of the right thought processes on things as far as building a roster to run the ball nowadays, it's just the vision for the application is dated. He's a good coach, more than anything he's a great man. I think it was time for a shakeup but it's bittersweet to see him go.

There's gonna be a lot of names thrown around until a how is made, I'm willing to bet it's someone no one is talking about right now though. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
