I’ve kept up with draft prospect forwards but haven’t paid attention to much of goaltending and defense.

I’m sold on Stenberg going first (not that he’s going with our 32nd overall pick)

But who’s a D or goalie that is standing out?

Or at least people who watch juniors regularly who do you like?

I’m just interested to know with enough games played to at least start forming opinions.

  1. Xavier Villeneuve, we don’t have a D-man like him in the system. Lane Hutson type of player

  2. Chase Reid and Albert Smits are ideal to me. Bedard, Nazar, Frondell, and Kantserov are looking pretty solid in the top 6 with many other guys fighting for the last 2 spots like Nestrasil, Moore, Boisvert, and Behm.

If the CHI and FLA picks land in the lotto range I’d like to see us jump up for defense to support Levshunov, Rinzel, and Vlasic.

  3. Best player available is probably a Korchinski replacement, his time as a young prospect is coming to an end and KD can’t afford to keep any more eggs in the KK basket

  4. I like Malhotra, but I definitely think we take a defenseman with at least one of the picks. I’m hoping for a RHD, but will be happy either way. Also like staying with bigger bodies, hoping Carels is there, or Smits when we pick. Nice crop of d-men.

    Villeneuve in a pinch 😀

  5. Not assuming on where we draft until the lottery solidifies it, these are how I would prioritize/interested in based on position (no goalies in this scenario)

    Forwards:
    Stenberg/Mckenna
    Bjorck
    Lawrence
    Novotny
    (More to evaluate)

    Defenseman:
    Verhoeff/Reid
    Villeneuve
    Smits/Carels
    (More to evaluate)

I’m MUCH higher on drafting a LD over a RD, but wouldn’t be upset at another RD

Forward is definitely where I would use the higher pick depending on where it lands

  6. Taking a RD would open us up to trading Lev/Rinzel which could be interesting but I can’t see that happening. I like Smits if we draft between 5-10 and then Villeneuve or Gustafsson for the later pick.

  7. If we’re gonna draft another D-man with our top pick, we have to get out in front of things and make a proactive trade with at least one of the guys currently in our system. Depth is one thing, but one of the worst things an organization can do is hang onto excess prospects until their value is depleted, especially when they are former high picks.
