‘Adrenaline kick-start’: Why Houston Texans players love using smelling salts
Smelling salts have become a common sight in NFL locker rooms — including with the Houston Texans. The ammonia-based product, classified as a drug by the FDA, dates back to ancient times and was originally used to revive people who fainted. Today, players say it provides a quick burst of focus and mental clarity before snaps. Some estimates suggest as many as 70–80% of NFL players use smelling salts, and most Texans players we spoke with said they’ve used them at some point.
