Remember when we had a healthy roster all at the same time?
When I compare this year and last year, I don’t think the team is fundamentally that much different. Same coach, same system, nearly identical roster. So what’s different?
Last year we were extremely lucky with injuries. We generally stayed healthy, and early in the season we picked up wins against teams who were unlucky with big injuries.
This year? We’ve lost key players to injuries and illnesses for chunks of time. PLD, Wilson have both hurt, Leonard and Sourdif getting hurt right as they started producing as well. Players like Protas and McMichael haven’t been able to sustain their contributions from last year.
Ultimately last year we probably over performed. Briefly at the beginning of the season we also got hot and over performed. We are a solid team but don’t have the depth to cover the luck regression.
That doesn’t mean this team is doomed though! If they can hang around the wild card spots, make the right move or two at the trade deadline, and get everyone back healthy and performing, there’s enough talent here to make a good run. Will that happen? Who knows. That’s why we watch and continue to cheer. Hold onto that hope Caps fans, and enjoy watching Ovi continue to etch his legacy in the record books. There’s fun to be had no matter what.
