I was annoyed for like 5 seconds and have moved on with my life.

  1. I get the teeth gnashing over this hire, but c’mon.

No one here was part of the interview team. I imagine a process where they sat down, talked about what they wanted, had a bunch of interviews, and this guy came out on top. (Or at least high up)

They intentionally hired externally rather than promote from within, which I think is a great sign. I feel like John Morton wouldn’t have been given the job if he hadn’t already been on staff.

Let’s give it a chance before we collectively crap our pants.

  2. This is how I handle most decisions they make since frankly I am not educated enough on talent around the league to really form a real opinion, so I just wait and see how shit shakes out lol

  3. Yes. Though if we nail the draft/FA and bolster our Oline/Dline properly the OC could be an idiot and we’d still put up 30+ points a game

  4. Yes, what Brad Holmes does to fix the O line is going to be a much bigger factor in our success than the play caller is. I’m not thrilled with Petzing but im also not going to throw a tantrum.

Even this year with Morton calling plays, when the O line played well like the Bears game, we put up 50 like it was nothing. We scored 44 2x with Dan calling plays when the O line was lights out vs.Cowboys and Commanders.

The success of this team is going to come down to how well the O line plays and how much Shep improves the defense in year 2.

  5. same my initial gut reaction was not exciting or interesting but at the end of the day i won’t fucking know how good or bad he is until they get onto the field in week 1 so i am moving on

  6. slow day yesterday so it was fun to be mad for a bit but ultimately nothing to do but hammer our puds until september to see what happens

  7. It’s not just the I don’t like this guy for the job, and hopefully I’m wrong, but it seems like Dan and Brad aren’t willing to make any real significant changes in their game-plan. That scares me a bit, but I can also see the pros to staying the course. Just gotta hope the cons don’t bite us in the ass, but I have a bad feeling Brad might not be as effective in the draft as we need him to be for 2026-27.

  8. Whether you’re optimistic or not about this hire, it won’t matter who is calling plays if we don’t fix the interior OL. Brad’s gotta lock in on that above everything else this offseason.

  9. I don’t really care tbh. I can see why people are unimpressed and not confident with this hire. But I’m reserving my outrage until after we actually see how he does a few games in.

  10. What’s interesting is there could be a movement in the NFL to use more 13 personnel because of the Rams success with it, and the Cardinals were 4th in EPA while in 13, behind the Rams, Bills, and Ravens. However the majority of their offense was 11 and 12 personnel, and their EPA was ranked 17th and 25th… so hopefully he can take his good run plays and combine it with Campbell’s pass scheme and call a good offense. I’m optimistic, but ready to be hurt.

  11. Hey, maybe Mr. third and long will meet Mr. Going on fourth in the middle and it’ll work out

  12. It’ll either be a good hire and we’ll go about our way, or it’ll be an ass hire and the memes will be good. Either way it’s a win win.

  13. I find it weird cause it wasn’t a name I recognized but then I thought about it and basically no one they hired outside of McDaniels would have been someone i felt pushed the needle. At the same time I never thought McDaniels was realistic. Now if he goes to Philly I will be much more annoyed as if he doesn’t “fit” here how the hell does he fit there.

It honestly feels like with an improved OLine a decent OC will succeed. I think even Morton would still be here if our OLine wasn’t so bad.

I think the biggest thing is when the talked to these guys finding the OC who understood what Goff does well and where he thrives. Yes I want an improved run game but not at the cost of QB play.

  14. Season doesn’t start for 7.5 more months and we have beautiful summer weather in between. I’m good, tbh.

That’s a September problem. And the Lions aren’t winning the SB anyways so whatever

  15. I will fully admit I don’t know enough to know if this was a good hire or not so I’m just gonna choose to be positive about it

  16. From what I’ve seen on Petzing’s offensive philosophy, it seems to be exactly what Campbell likes. The guy has ties to Hank Fraley, Ben Johnson, Stefanski, and Shane Steichen. He’s been around good minds and the Arizona run game has been good besides this yr. Arizona was injured on offense so the run game was hampered but was still average in the metric while also having to play Seattle, La, and SF twice a year. Trey McBride had an insane season so expect Laporta to have a bounce back season. Draft him for fantasy this yr trust.

  17. I don’t claim to know more than the people working on the team, but I’m not sure why the entire Lions collective would say Mike wasn’t a fit when Campbell liked him. Dan should have the damn near final say here.

  18. the more i look things up about him the more there is to like.

what was the goal of this hire?

    1. Take play-calling duties away from Dan Campbell – well he’s been calling plays in arizona so we at least have an experienced play caller which Morton was not.

    2. Fix the run game – before this season when both their #1 and #2 RBs were injured for the entire year, he had a top 10 run game in both 2023 and 2024 so this seems to address that need

    3. Someone who knows how to utilize all of our weapons in the pass game – this is where there’s still a big question mark. He couldn’t get solid production out of Marvin Harrison Jr and I see on the cardinals sub that this seemed to be the big issue with him. Now, to counter that point, he DID get huge production out of Trey McBride (Sam LaPorta all pro season loading) and that was with Jacoby Brissett behind center who is not nearly as talented as Jared Goff.

A big issue with our passing attack last year was that we couldn’t get the run game going and we couldn’t get enough protection for Goff. So if we nail the O line in free agency/draft this could end up working out still. Also, he has experience working with Hank Fraley in Minnesota so that’s a plus they should be able to get on the same page.

  19. I don’t think it would matter if Morton was still the OC. Lions were putting up 35 ppg with him the first half of the season before the Oline fell apart. I understand the lack of Jamo but when it comes to actual offensive production it will just depend on the Oline.
