ESPN On Falcons Big Offseason Move
“The sense for a while has been that Cousins’ time in Atlanta was short — especially when both sides restructured his contract that includes $67.9 million in 2027 salary, vesting March 13. The Falcons will want nothing to do with that number. But contracts can be amended — or players can be cut and re-signed — and the arrival of coach Kevin Stefanski could make keeping Cousins at least mildly tempting as a bridge option.Stefanski was Cousins’ offensive coordinator in Minnesota in 2019, when Cousins completed nearly 70% of his passes for 3,603 yards, 26 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. 1. Kirk’s record as a starter this year is 5-3 not 4-3 . He beat saints twice, buccaneers, rams and the cardinals…. Don’t know how that adds to 4 wins lol

  2. Kirk gives the Falcons the best chance at making the playoffs… you always go with the best man for the job in order to keep your customer base happy. Kirk is the smart option from a business standpoint, and I want to believe Arthur Blank is a smart business person.

  3. I understand that you think that Kurt cousins will not be here at the end of the year, but do you feel that that is a good move for the Falcons or do you feel they should keep them? I personally feel he should transition with the Falcons next year.

  4. Y. Keeping Cousins for 2026 gives Penix time to fully heal and regain his football strength. It also gives us one more year to evaluate Penix and decide if we’d like to move on from that one. The 2027 draft may be better for QBs and we have a first rounder. “Curse of the Falcons” podcast, wherever you get your podcasts.

  5. Realistically what are the Falcons options? There is no guarantee Penix will be ready to play by even mid-season let alone Week 1 and even if he is he didn't show much of anything to give confidence that he has a high ceiling he can reach in all honesty. Cousins could still be released and then be brought back at a much more manageable number for the team… and he gives the Falcons a QB who knows the personnel, has a good history with the new offensive playcaller, and 2 years post-Achilles is usually the year that most guys get back to being themselves post-injury. The options to draft are virtually nil at where the Falcons will be drafting. The options of guys that the team could sign or trade for is equally uninspiring… guys like Justin Fields, Marcus Mariota, Davis Mills, et al… The best available is probably Mac Jones but he would cost real draft capital and I don't think he's that much better than Kirk to justify giving away a 2nd round draft pick (SF's likely asking price) even if he's much younger… the high ceiling just isn't there. Daniel Jones isn't happening, he's not leaving Indy and Indy isn't letting him leave. Malik Willis?? Maybe but he would come with extreme risk no matter what price you get him at… there is zero evidence that outside of Green Bay and LaFleur's scheme that he is even an NFL player, but he is intriguing, and a competition between him and Penix could be the way to go… assuming you don't get into a bidding war with some other team that really believes in Willis. Beyond those names what else is out there?? Russ? Tyrod? Flacco? Wentz? Would you really rather have any of them than Kirk? Garoppolo? Pickett? Seriously? Hell, the best option might be sign Zach Wilson and hope for lightning in a bottle… at least there is an extremely high ceiling there even if it's 95+% unreachable the chance is non-zero. All things considered, if they can get Kirk at a reasonable number he makes the most sense in the Falcons position even if fans don't want to admit it.

  6. ESPN is a bunch of clowns. I remember specifically last offseason signing Devine deablo and ESPN said it was a terrible signing. A year later and he’s a crucial member of our defense!

  7. 1) Keep Kirk.
    2) Trade Penix for whatever you can get. Penix can't/won't play under center. That means Penix is not an NFL quarterback.
    3) Sign a decent veteran backup. One who can win us a few games at need.
    4) In 2027, draft Kirk's replacement.

  8. Let Kirk have the next season. Let penix sit the season to get fully healthy. Matt and Mr. 2X is not getting a free season. Sam dornald and kubiak first year doing great. With Mr. 2X and Matt approval, we better go far next season. We’re not blaming OCs next year.
