  1. Drury can identify the problem. He knows the team needs to get younger and speed is an enormous issue. (No shit)

The problem is he fixes as a flat tire by replacing the glove box

  2. There is absolutely nothing that Drury has done that suggests he can execute a strategy at this scale and with this level of complexity. Unless maybe it was getting Gorton fired.

Drury hasn’t built anything. His notable trades have been to tear something apart, Kreider, Trouba, Goodrow, Lindgren, Kaako, etc. all these departures have served a tactical purpose and a broad brush strategic goal, but theses are addition by subtraction moves. What has he built?

From a fans perspective, Drury doesn’t seem to have adequate public facing or interpersonal skills. And this lack of relatability is not offset by his results or his apparent acumen. It seems like he draws a unique kind of vitriol from the fanbase. We see an arrogant man, who tells us the fans that he knows better, and then fails, year after year. We see incompetence. We don’t see the fine hockey mind that hockey people refer to. We see a flawed character. Maybe the fans are wrong, but the opprobrium for Drury’s character is overshadowing our affection for the flawed team that the gm has assembled. And knowing that the owner is ill equipped to see the character deficiencies that seem so evident to the fans only builds that resentment.

  3. Can’t imagine anyone disagrees with this take, just look at his track record on drafting, trades, development, company culture – all terrible.

  4. This letter does just the bare minimum by acknowledging the roster needs to change. What next though? Where is the accountability for drafting and development that got us in this position? If Dolan is set on keeping Drury fine but he needs to fix a lot more than just the roster. Without those changes we have no hope for management to get this right a second time.

  5. I still don’t think people appreciate just how cataclysmic his operations have been over the last 4 years. It might honestly be one of the worst runs of management in recent sports history

The man inherited a Cup contender in 2021 that yes, was VERY lucky to have had Kakko, Laf and Fox basically gift wrapped to us. The team had a slew of new talent coming in with Schneider, Chytl, Miller, and more. Established core players.

The Buchnevich trade set into motion close to probably 15 if not 20 transactions that have systematically crippled the franchise. Between the players we brought in with his money (Reaves, Nemeth, Goodrow), the tons of draft capital to fix the band aid resulting in so many draft picks being lost, to the fact every single band aid did not stay with the team, every single move related to the family tree of Buchnevich harmed the franchise.

Every draft pick Drury has made has basically had the same weakness….Speed. The Rangers were already slow and the biggest red flag on almost every pick is slow foot speed. So he’s made a known problem worse with no solutions.

He has hired 3 coaches that have had no interest in developing younger talent and routinely punish them for young player mistakes.

What are now left with, is one of the 3 worst teams in the league BEFORE we sell anyone off, we are in salary cap hell, a slew of older veterans we cannot trade off, horrific contracts like Laf no one will want, a depleted farm system, and a last place AHL team.

Drury could be fired tomorrow, and it’s going to take 7-10 years to remove his stench from this franchise.

Look at the Blackhawks since Kane/Towes/Keith went past their peak but they couldn’t offload the contracts and were stuck. That is the kind of mundane hell we are going to be living in for a long long time. We won’t be able to actually rebuild until 2030

  6. Pretty spot on. It’s doable, but Drury likely not the guy to pull it off. I hope he somehow does, because I want this team to succeed, but I won hold my breath, that’s for sure.

  7. FIRE DRURY πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎ

  8. I will get downvoted for this, but I don’t think Drury or this Front Office is an issue going forward.

People have claimed a few reasons as to why he stinks, but each one can be broken up logistically.

From who we draft, to who we developed, to how we have performed, to how we handled player situations and cap issues.

    – Our draft compared to the top 1% doesn’t look good, but we’re above average and have a running list under Drury as a GM and an even longer list of him as Player Development / VP of producing NHL ready players.

    – Under Drury, we have a winning record, an ECF run and a President’s Trophy.

    – We moved players we needed to move based on cap. Can’t get emotional here. Every fan wanted Goodrow, Trouba out and many agree that Kreider had to go. No one wanted to trade Buch, but we got Blais back in return and were able to replace him yearly with players like Vatrano, Copp, Tarasov and even Patrick Kane for nothing.

**You guys are thinking** too emotionally.

We stink now because we have a main core who are old and past their prime trying to lead the team.

And Laffy never became Sidney Crosby. Boohoo. That’s not an issue of who we took but an issue of bad-luck, we only get a #1 pick when it mattered least lol.

We can pivot from here pretty easily with trades and draft

  9. No one on this team is performing all that much better or worse from what should be expected from them given their career averages and age.

The team is actually achieving exactly what it was designed for. It was just horrendously designed.

  10. πŸ˜‚. Supporters of analytics get so mad at everyone else when their analytics fail.

  11. somebody once said here that drury’s criteria for talent evaluation is looking for players who most resemble what he was as a player, so a middle 6 player with skills and talent that dont translate into the modern day NHL.

and i’ve never been able to shake that. the things that made drury “good” during his career max out at average defensemen and bottom 6 forwards now.

  12. Drury probably isn’t going anywhere after this year which is incredibly disheartening. Sullivan is his guy. The letter seemed like damage control. Dolan loves him. It’s very annoying because someone else should be here rebuilding this team. The good news is the noise is getting really loud from the fans. If this deadline isn’t a home run, if the Rangers continue to get next to nothing from Hartford, and if free agency next year ends up translating into another wet fart of a season with little to no promise for the future I cannot see him sticking around. It might take awhile but it’s starting to get harder for ownership to justify him sticking around
