And now imagine how many Sergei would have playing 3 vs 3 ☺️

No hate, just stats like this make me upset

Dylan himself pointed this out following the game.
This record will probably belong to Raymond at some point. He has six already.

Also, Larkin has tied Lidstrom for career overtime points at 26.
This was my first thought when I saw this as well!
People also gave TB and Boston credit for setting new wins records when they had a bunch of those as SO wins that would’ve been ties in 96. Which is even sillier
Feels like lots of people are padding their OT stats in the Atlantic this year lol. Imagine winning games in regulation, don’t they want to see more hockey?
If 3 v 3 was around back then Fedorov would have over 100 overtime goals. That statistic is comparing apples to orange colored truck tires.
Good for Larks – he’s been dragging this team behind him for almost a decade. Send him to the yoffs!
Larkin himself said there should be an asterisk next to it because he’s all class. Still impressive by him.
The game evolves boys and girls. Not something to get upset about, imagine how many OT goals Newsy Lalonde would have had if they were allowed to pass the puck forward in the 1910s!
Hockey is much faster now, and players are in better shape because of how they train in the offseason. They’re harder to play against. I’d give Larkin more credit, instead of downgrading him.

It’s just anecdotal, it’s like the team wins and points record; you think the Tampa Bay team in 2018-19 and hell not the Bruins team in 2022-23 was better than the 1995-96 Wings?
DET – 62 – 13 – 7 (Ties) – 3 OT Wins (5v5, 5 mins). No shootouts in the league.
TBL – 62 – 16 – 4 (OT Loss) – 7 OT Wins (3v3) and 7 SO wins.
BOS – 65 – 12 – 5 (OT Loss) – 7 OT Wins (3v3) and 4 SO wins
Nobody was better than the 1976-77 Canadiens though,
MTL – 60 – 8 – 12 (Ties) – No overtime period or Loser points. Pure domination.
EDIT:
Maybe unpopular opinion, but if they were to make changes again, I don’t want the 3-points system most people advocate for. With 84 games (starting next season), 2 points is enough. In Europe they play way fewer games, and have fewer teams in their leagues. 3 pts system is necessary to create separation.
But with 82-84 games in the NHL it would be interesting to see them tinkering with it, maybe 2 pts for reg wins, 2 pts OT win, no loser point, 1 point for a SO win or keep the loser point, but give nothing to the loser for going to a SO. Maybe teams would lose on purpose (Tortorella type tactics) if they can’t win and get nothing in the SO. But lots of ways to make it less advantageous to collect loser points. I just don’t love the VGK type of situation, only 24 total wins (17th, 19th in Reg wins), but top 8 in pts with 60, only 6 back of Detroit.
Also it feels nowadays like if the game is tied in the mid to late third period teams kinda play for OT.
Sergei would’ve made a mockery of 3 on 3

He’d have more but only in his era. He wouldn’t be nearly as productive in today’s era. No disrespect but that’s my opinion
Would’ve been a decisive OT advantage to have Sergei out there. Imagine him on a 3 on 3 playing defense?
If we’re going this route. The 80’s Oilers and Gretzky, Kurri, Messier, Andersen, etc. would have the record. No question.
My only argument is if they were playing 3v3 would anyone but Datsyuk even need to touch the puck?
Yeah Sergei would’ve been unstoppable in 3 on 3 & he was so good defensively he could’ve been ‘the d man’ in a 3 man group. Think like Stevie/Shanny/Sergei 😳
Also Sergei, Lidstrom + *whatever other forward* could’ve been, at the same time, the ‘shutdown’ group & the ‘high skill offense’ group. Lol.
We also wouldve been unstoppable if 3 on 3 was a thing in the mid 2000s. Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Lidstrom…other team wouldn’t touch the puck. 2 natural centers (either can win the draw) who are both great defensively & both puck possession kings & have an awe-inspiring chemistry + the GOAT dman who is great offensively & routinely makes 80ft tape-to-tape passes…it would’ve been something else to watch. Going further with that—Rafalski or Kronwall as the D on the 2nd group. Great skaters with ability to handle to the puck + a finisher like Franzen & a sneaky player like Hudler. Would’ve been insane.
Imagine the 3v3 OT lineups we would have had in the late 90s/early 2000s. OT wouldn’t have lasted two minutes.
I’m more annoyed by the headline.
Larkin got the goal, but Seider deserves the credit for that win.
It’s pretty wild that I feel very confident with us going to OT. I mean, we are like 8-2 🤣
