Report: Astros’ Arrighetti declines World Baseball Classic appearance

  1. I get it. I’d want my country’s team to be a bunch of badasses but if I was a guy still trying to pursue a payday for me and my family while also coming back from an injury, I guess I’d be a little protective of the application of my skill.

  2. I’m happy about it.

Hunter Brown, Christian Javier, Tatsuya Imai, Mike Burrows, Spencer Arrighetti, Ryan Weiss, Lance McCullers Jr, Jason Alexander, Nate Pearson

Even if you assume Pearson is going to the bullpen, and just ignore Lance for one reason or another, that’s seven possible starters without even mentioning Blubaugh and Ullola. Either way, I like him staying home and making sure he’s healthy enough to earn his starting spot.

  3. Smart man. I hate the WBC and hate that the Astros allow their top Major League players to play in the WBC. Absolutely, do not allow the pitchers to play. Allow minor leaguers to play in that bs. And sit back and watch other team’s players to get injured.

  4. Aw man, i woulda loved to see him. I bought tickets for both USA v Mex & Italy v Mex (nose bleeds)

  5. Spaghatti will be busy getting Cy Young votes this season of course, he will turn this down.

  6. I hope this doesn’t sound dickish because I really don’t mean it that way, but would y’all support his decision to not pitch for team USA rather than team Italy?

Personally, I think it’s the right call for him. He’s been through enough, and he needs to save that arm for the games that give him a paycheck. I’m just wondering if we would feel differently if he were declining to play for us.

  7. > “There was a lot of interest on both ends, but it boiled down to me knowing this season with the Astros is a little bit bigger for my career and for the organization,” Arrighetti said. “We have a mission to accomplish this year, and I didn’t feel like this was a situation where the risk and reward were anywhere near each other.
