Bears Linked To Top EDGE in ’26 NFL Draft + Mel Kiper Jr.’s 1st Pick For Bears & Great CGJ News

The Chicago Bears are already being linked to multiple high-upside defensive prospects in the 2026 NFL Draft, and early connections suggest the front office is clearly building with Dennis Allen’s defensive identity in mind. From disruptive interior defenders to versatile trench pieces and key veterans signaling a desire to stay in Chicago, the Bears’ defensive blueprint for the future is starting to come into focus.

One name generating early buzz is Akheem Mesidor, the powerful defensive lineman out of Miami. Mesidor projects as an ideal fit for Dennis Allen’s front, thanks to his ability to anchor against the run while still generating interior pressure. At Miami, Mesidor consistently showed a strong first step, heavy hands, and the ability to collapse the pocket from multiple alignments. He flashed both as a 3-technique and shaded nose, giving defensive coordinators flexibility in sub-packages. His production against the run stood out, regularly eating double teams and freeing up linebackers, while also posting strong pressure rates when asked to penetrate. For a Bears defense that values toughness up front and disruption on early downs, Mesidor checks several important boxes.

The Bears have also been linked to Kayden McDonald, according to Mel Kiper Jr., as another intriguing 2026 draft option. McDonald brings a different skill set but fills a similar need — size, power, and interior control. Known for his leverage, block-shedding ability, and consistent motor, McDonald profiles as a reliable interior presence who can play winning football on first and second down. His ability to maintain gap integrity while still pushing the pocket fits well with Allen’s emphasis on disciplined run defense paired with timely pressure. Pairing a player like McDonald with Chicago’s existing defensive pieces could significantly strengthen the Bears’ ability to control games in cold-weather environments at Soldier Field.

While the draft conversation builds, the Bears are also monitoring the future of C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who is showing all signs that he wants to return to Chicago in 2026. Gardner-Johnson brought energy, edge, and communication to the secondary, serving as a tone-setter both pre-snap and post-snap. His versatility to play deep safety, rotate into the box, and match up in the slot makes him a valuable chess piece in Allen’s system. Beyond the stat sheet, his leadership and swagger resonated with teammates, and his presence helped stabilize coverage responsibilities against top offenses. Retaining a player like Gardner-Johnson would give the Bears continuity while allowing younger defenders to grow within a consistent structure.

Taken together, these developments highlight a clear organizational vision. The Bears are prioritizing physicality, versatility, and defensive depth — building from the trenches outward while maintaining veteran leadership on the back end. Whether through the 2026 NFL Draft or smart roster retention, Chicago is positioning itself to remain competitive, aggressive, and adaptable in an evolving NFC landscape.

  2. Edge

I believe it to be the most difficult athletic role to play — the perfect balance of size and speed. This is football–people agree to run into trucks for a living. Who has the strongest struts, axel…and as a Bear…the attitude.

Maxx you ARE a Bear, you know it in your gut. Come and take that ring and slide onto your swipin' paws. Come swipe for the Big Bad Beautiful Bears 🐻 play from your prime til the end in our den bruh

Hendrickson your name sounds like viking, and vikings are badass and scary creatures.
    …………
I want the scariest m#*/&er out there, but is your heart big enough for Chicago? This is the house that Walter built. Warrior on the field, yet strong enough to be a loving presence in the world 🌎 these are the true greats.

  3. Meisador is a player I like sooooooo much. We get him if he drops down to us and we get a DT in free agency. If we don't, get Kayden McDonald when he is there , pick up Hendrickson or trade for Crosby, the draft a mid round edge along with two DT's to help with the line and have someone(edge) to learn off of CROSBY/Hendrickson and montez sweat. Have Austin booker be a 2 way(interior line man or edge) to bring size and pass deflection/ disruptive tendencies.
