‘For all intensive [yes, intensive] purposes, Doolittle defines a breakout team as “a club that wins at least 10 more games than what would be expected by its established level of play.”’
While 71 wins would mean steady improvement, I’m not sure I’d call it a ‘breakout’
Article contains this gem: “For all intents and purposes.”
Does one no longer need to know grammar to be a “writer?”
Feel like this team at most goes .500 just don’t see it going beyond that.
Big breakout .400 season incoming
I doubt we will be all that good but to be fair there are a lot of interesting pieces that could lead us to competing for .500
Montgomery, Teel, Murakami, Meidroth, Quero all feel like solid players and a couple of these guys could breakout into all-stars. Vargas and Acuña I don’t expect too much from but they both have talent. Then you have guys like Beni who hopefully doesn’t look like trash, and Sosa who might continue to provide some pop.
Not great but could be a middle of the pack offense if guys develop.
Pitching does look a lot more bleak. Have to hope Shane Smith looks good and Kay can transition back to MLB. Then we have another handful of youngish starters who I don’t expect much from but you never know. I do hope we see 80+ innings from Grant Taylor out of the pen though which could help a lot.
Plus for what it’s worth fangraphs has us at a .431 W% or ~70-92. Not too hard to believe we end up a few games better than that.
How much is Jerry paying Bradford for this?
I had a glimmer of hope that solid development for the youngsters + Robert having a breakout season was gonna be how we snuck into the playoffs. Now w/o Robert, all pressures on the youngsters.
This is entirely a “they had a lot of young guys get called up last year and played well. If they all take a step they could stick around long enough to make some noise come September.”
Its entirely based on guys becoming really good right away with no major slumps.

In Kyle Teel and Chase Meidroth we trust
Breaking out as in winning 75 games?
