TIL former White Sox/Tigers slugger Magglio Ordonez was elected mayor in Venezuela
January 28, 2026
As a former White Sox fan nostalgic for Magglio, was endearing to learn this from his Wiki after someone posted his walk-off ALCS homerun the other day.

This thread will surely be a rational and intelligent discussion of people with deep understanding, and no bias involving, Venezuelan politics and Bolivarian thought.
God I fucking love Maggs
For some reason in my head his name has always sounded like a swear word. So instead of exclaiming “sh#t!” or “f#*k!” I will sometimes give a forceful “Maggilo Ordonez!”
Mayor Maggs
Goodluck
I remember people at my summer camp wearing long black wigs and Tigers hats back when Magglio had the long hair
O-E-O
*former and still current White Sox fan. Don’t know why I put that in the post.
I used to be a White Sox fan. I still am, but I used to, too. – RIP Mitch
Magglio’s political home run! Never saw that coming. Who knew the diamond translated to city halls?

Was almost a Red Sox so excited for him, also had some great postseason moments that I remember
This is interesting.. I remember him stirring up a lot of controversy for his staunch support of Hugo Chavez.
Weird story but I once met actor Jeff Daniels and he had a few of his dogs with him. I asked what their names were and one of them was Magglio – turns out he is a huge Tigers fan and got the dog shortly after the ALCS walkoff. Got to chat baseball with him for a bit – really awesome guy
Magglio was the GOAT in MLB Power Pros 2008
I always liked Magglio, especially because my youth baseball team was called the White Sox and I wore #30. I caught his debut on WGN and was like “wow this guy is wearing my number!”.
Tom Brenneman’s call of Maggi’s pennant-winning homer will forever be engrained onto myself. Epic.
Dude went from swinging for fences to fixing fences. Talk about a career switch up!
Fuck yeah love this dude just wish he had played longer
I still remember my first game when Raul Mondesi homered in the home opener. My first real baseball memory. Decades later, I learned he became a Dominican politician, later convicted and imprisoned for corruption.
Damn I remember him being a solid player player but I just checked his BR page and he was stellar even late in his career.
