Mark Bullock writes up how current players might fit into Daronte Jones' system

With the Commanders hiring a new defensive coordinator, we can finally start looking ahead to the offseason and figuring out which players on the roster are good fits for the new scheme and what might need changing. I broke down the general scheme that we’re expecting new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones to bring in previously, so be sure to read that post first for an idea of what type of schemes the Commanders will be running. But now it’s time to focus on the current roster and see which players could benefit from this hire and which players might struggle.

  1. I listened to that last night – when Gauldi teased the segment, my first thought was, ‘Jordan MaGee will for sure be one to benefit from a more aggressive D scheme. Then, iirc, Bullock didn’t mention him (was cleaning, not 100% focused at the time so mb i missed it). But with his speed, I see MaGee thriving in a more blitz-happy, aggressive D.

    If he can stay healthy.

  2. If you haven’t already done so, I highly suggest you follow Mark on any social media platform and join substack to read his breakdowns. No one covers the x’s and o’s and personnel better than this guy.

  3. If they change the scheme (which I hope they do), then Bain Jr. is not at play, they’ll either go Reese or Downs whoever is available at that spot. After that I think they go Bailey and Styles.

  4. Everybody is talking about switching to a 34 base and breaking down Flores’s scheme and I’m not sure why everyone is assuming this as a given. Jones has been a DC before, at LSU directly prior to his tenure with the Vikings, and he ran a 425 base. He also coached under Marvin Lewis’s 43 scheme in Cincinnati. Our head coach has run a 43 for his entire career and our roster is based around that defense.

Until we hear from the coaching staff themselves I wouldn’t assume a wholesale switch to 34 base. We may see it occasionally, and he’ll probably bring the aggressive blitz concepts from the Flores D, but I doubt we move away from 4 down linemen entirely.

  5. I really don’t agree about personnel and moving to a 3-4…. Like he said, Goldman is 32. Nose Tackle is a unicorn position to find. We ran 3-4 here before and we always had issues…. Not finding a true Nose. Payne and Kinlaw can’t play it effectively. Payne…. Not big enough…. Kinlaw plays too high and will get killed due to his height.

ILB…. Sure no problem. All of our backers can play it.

OLB…. Jacob Martin can play one side. He can play the run, set and edge and rush. I think he would excel. The issue is…. He’s about the only guy that can. The rest of our DE’s just won’t be good standing up. They are DE bodies all the way. Luvu…. Sure he can rush the passer, can he set an edge??? He certainly can’t drop….

That’s the biggest things to change moving to a 3-4…. NT and finding 2 OLB’s that have the size and mobility to rush, set and edge and drop.

I can see them sticking with more a 4-2-5 look…. And just dropping the DE at times to create chaos. Unless…. They make this change a priority in free agency and draft. $$$$
