DAY 440 (1043/543) on THE ROAD TO THE 2026 6TH WBSC-MLB WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC – The Legacy of Jackie Robinson and Mark Marquess
Today, as we celebrate the memory of Jackie Robinson, we also honor the legacy of 1988 Olympic gold medal skipper Mark Marquess, who 38 years ago helped the USA win its first ever Olympics gold in baseball.
The legacy of two adopted sons of California, who each gave their all to the sport and each contributed to the fame and honor it has enjoyed today, continues to guide us all, players and fans alike, as we advance with full steps together towards better days ahead in our sport.
Jackie and Mark, each linked to the collegiate scene in the state and the wider American nation, each left contributions to the history of the sport they dedicated so much of their lives to: Jackie, an alumnus of the UCLA team, being responsible for the racial integration of the sport in the USA, Mark, the longtime skipper in Stanford, would be the one that USA Baseball hired as its Olympics team manager in 1988 leading it to the gold medal, leading to a historic appointment as its president a year later, preparing the way for the sport’s formal debut as a Olympic medal sport in Barcelona in 1992.
Their memory will continue to shine over this global sport in the years to come.
For Glory
John
