Suárez Signs Cheap, But Not in Pittsburgh. How Did This Happen?

The Pirates watched a major offensive upgrade walk right into the division — as Eugenio Suárez signs a one-year deal to go back with the Cincinnati Reds. With rumors once pointing to a long-term contract, how did Pittsburgh miss out on a potential bargain — and what does it mean for keeping pace in the NL Central?

We also dive into Oneil Cruz working out with Kevin Kiermaier to improve in center field. What kind of leap does Cruz need to make in 2026 for this team to finally break its playoff drought?

Plus, with reports of Andrew McCutchen meeting with Bob Nutting, is a reunion close? And with the Boston Red Sox still shopping for a third baseman, how aggressive should the Pittsburgh Pirates be?

All that and more on this episode of Bucco Brew.

  1. The bat was set so low that what they have done this offseason some people make it out to be great. It’s not. Remember, they still haven’t signed anyone to a long term deal. There will be no 2027 season and even if there is the revenue shooting will be so much higher that it doesn’t actually cost the buccos anything.

  2. I felt like the Pirates and Reds were going to battle for 3rd place and the final wild card spot. Suarez signing in Cincinnati makes the Reds a better team than Pittsburgh. I'm not seeing a path anymore ladies and gentlemen.

  3. You can’t change the past you can only effect what happens going forward… no sense talking about what’s in the past bc it’s done. They messed up we all know that but re hashing it doesn’t do anything

  4. He probably didn't want to come here. Especially if he's signing a prove it kind of deal, which he did. Great American Small Park will pad his numbers. Let's quit moping and acting like this is a big mystery. I get sick of hearing he didn't want to play for a loser too. You mean to tell me Lowe O'Hearn don't make this team about a .500 team? If Suarez comes, they contend.

  5. They would have had to over pay the 15mil to get him with the circumstances, not match it. Not seriously trying to get him. They Need to button up some young stars(Griffen, chandler, Hernandez) early long term on a team friendly contract like they did with cutch before they get to where Skenes is and there’s no way they would resign long term.

  6. Don’t blame anyone re Suarez no signing except anyone that is ghashing their teeth over this, if anything they should have focused on other needs instead of believing we absolutely needed Suarez. MOVE ON

  7. I am fuming at how Cherington and Nutting think the fans are so gullible n stupid. The thought of spending more to even 110M was a joke. They are already at what they were last year. Im sick of this.

  8. Reds loaded.. these teams are not on the same level top to bottom. You got to over pay for FA. Reds Top 3 NL starting staff .top5 bullpen potential and young talent ahead of their prime. Chase Burns is our 5th starter BTW

  9. Reds fan here. Suarez has a lot of personal ties in Cincinnati. He wanted to come back more than anything. You were going to have to grossly overpay. Im talking 23-25 a year to pry him from Cincinnati.

  10. Honestly Cruz is another dumb Dominican… No offense but that’s what he is…. doesn’t have the smarts to be that “guy” so to speak… Another Polonco.. All the talent in the world but his brain just holds him back. It’s tha simple
