[Nick Wagoner-ESPN] Goodell: NFL to reevaluate approach after 1 minority coach hired this cycle
February 3, 2026
Gee, took a real genius to figure this out, also, maybe would’ve helped if you gave the Bears the draft picks instead of getting hung up on a technicality

How about they give us our comp pick.
Is it even a technicality? It seems like they’ve decided Matt Ryan is a liar.
Can he also investigate this stupid loophole Atlanta just bent us over with? Matt Ryan being big brother means we don’t get picks is bullshit
There is still plenty of time for the NFL to award the Bears those picks back. Hopefully someone from the Bears is fighting this with the league office. Regardless, Rodger should take care of the charter franchise and one of his rating darlings.
How about Reevaluating the approach by giving us our 2-3rd RD comp picks for Ian…
I realistically think the problem is more systemic than the NFL can actually handle. At the end of the day you don’t know the *real* reason why minority candidates aren’t getting these jobs as these are private discussions, but we do know they have limited access into a very gatekept league (as with all pro sports). Most people tend to be friends with people of their own race, which translates into them networking with (and ultimately hiring) their own race in the professional space. It’s obvious that it’s created a barrier for minority coaches, but comp picks aren’t going to completely solve this.
I think the league needs to invest in more fellowships specifically targeted towards minorities that are accessible to people without pre-existing connections. That will create an inevitable pipeline and increase visibility for minority coaches. I think the same should also be done for administrative roles in the league. As shit as the Browns are, they actually have a diversity fellowship for this exact purpose which I’ve always respected.

“Minorities matter” on the back of helmets, problem solved
I blame Ryan Pace
Can we please stop this nonsense?
You guys still crying about the draft picks?
i mean yeah when someone finds a loophole around a rule that usually calls for reevaluation 💀
So.. wtf are you actually trying to convey here? NFL just needs to hire dudes with a darker complexion??
Kinda hard to be taken seriously as a head coach prospect if you don’t have access to the lower positions to get your name recognition and experience.
For progressing racial equity in nfl coaching, imo more important to have rooney rule or dei just to ensure lower level staff roles, that have open processes, encourage people of minority status to apply.
Forcing the rooney rule for just Head Coach hiring hasn’t been leveling the playing field, managers are gaming it and making a mockery of the racial equity.
Head coach should be on merit, but we’re all old enough to understand that connections get you hired. A way to develop those connections is by opening the doors wide for lower level coaching positions, and giving more incentives to former players and visible minorities esp. to go to “coaching school”, or encourage them to go sit in with coaches after practice, as they enter their last contracts.
I think its only when the experience, level and pool of non-white position coaches and coordinators increases, that that’s when managers/owners will have to seriously consider minority candidates out of interest and not legal necessity to be their head coach.
Tomlin would have been hired somewhere if he wanted to coach this year.
Why would anyone follow any of these rules in good faith if you can just loophole around it when convenient
Fire eberflus
Make Tisch sell to a minority
If Scheelhaase doesn’t get an OC job out of this then I’ll have to wonder why he was getting HC interviews at this stage
The thread on this got removed from r/nfl but it was filled with a bunch of annoying racist guys. Its absurd there were 10 openings and no obvious standout candidates and fucking Mike Lafleur gets a job for being Matt’s little brother. The amount of nepotism is just absurd and the fact that most of the league’s owners are racist old white guys who were friends with Epstein is the root of the problem
