Dodgers pledged $100 million to Newsom’s wildfire relief fund. So far? $7.8 million. Why?

  1. For all the money they are paying Kyle Fucker they should get him to rebuild California

  2. It’s probably a multi year pledge with a determined payout structure

    That’s how pledges work

  3. It only makes sense to fund projects that are ready to receive those funds and put those funds to use. They pledged to provide money, they didn’t pledge to manage the rebuilding projects directly or to ensure their efficiency. Someone else is dropping the ball somewhere.

  4. Reading the article it sounds like they just threw out a number for the good press without doing any research and now they’re seeing it’s actually quite hard to do your own means testing to divvy up donations.

  6. Completely unbiased opinion here but it could be that the Dodgers are part of the Axis of Evil.

  7. The Dodgers screwed California out of more than $100M in taxes thanks to deferred payments, so donating $100M is the least they could do

  8. Probably because Newsom will mismanage the funds and it won’t go to wildfire relief

  9. You clearly don’t know ball. Newsom gonna make more in sponsorships and jersey sales because of this deal.

  10. As someone who works in wildfire class action settlement, you should never take the money from the government anyways because they’re just using it as a carrot to try and get you to drop your ability to join in on a suit which will almost always get you way more money (though a couple years slower).

  11. Its probably a multi year pledge, but also when money is made available from a grant like this, its not as if there are expenses just waiting to be paid with it. They have their criteria set, and expenses need to accrue or be accounted for

Not sure what their plan for the funds are, but let’s say it’s to rebuild public infrastructure, and lets say a town had its library burn down, first, im sure they’re not paying what’s being covered by insurance, so the town first needs to navigate the process of getting the claim all settled. Thats leaves them with a big pile of cash that they’ll first spend on design work for the new library and then construction costs, and it won’t be until that money is exhausted that they would get the dodgers money. But the dodgers money is not going to go building a $50m library in a community that would be served perfectly with a $10m library. So there will be some back and forth over the project’s scope before ground can even be broken with the insurance money

I obvs can’t say for certainly this is the process, but based off my exp, this is how likely will play

  12. Watch in a few years, the LA Times winds up losing its sports journalism too

I’m not a cheerleader for terrible mainstream sporst media, but it’s also not a good look to see what is happening over at the WaPo

  13. Newsome should’ve known we defer our shit. Reach out to the Mets if you want it immediately 🤣

  14. I really wish I was the first person to see this post so I could make the first “they deferred the payments” joke

  15. Me rushing to the comments to make a “they deferred the payment” comment:

  16. That’s $7.8 million donation was too much. Much of the wildfire fund money has already proven to have been funneled into Newsom’s political NGO’s that has nothing to do with the wildfires. People donated to the fund out of good will and Newsom stole their money and gave it to his friends. People can’t even afford to work their way through the red tape and get the permits to rebuild, people were underinsured because of the high costs of materials and Newsom sitting on $100 million didn’t give them a dime.

  17. Because they realized it’s a joke and only pennies are going to help those in need. Newsom is a terrible leader and human, no morals or ethics.

  18. Pledging is not legally binding. Many celebrities pledge to donate but never do. It makes them look charitable.

  19. Oh sure they can spend billions to destroy baseball by buying a super team, but they can’t give a fraction of that to even help the people they claim to care about and represent? Disgusting
