[Pagnotta] Per sources, Seattle tried hard to acquire Panarin and offered him a significant contract extension worth north of $12M AAV in the 3-4 year range. Wasn’t enough to entice Panarin to change his mind, thus no deal.

  1. Nice to see Panarin looking out for the Kraken.

edit: Just imagining a 37-38 year old Panarin looping around the ice at $12m/yr with 15 goals on the year and it’s late March.

  2. Sources were also very sure that Panarin was going to Canes 20 minutes before the Kings trade happened. I hope the Kraken weren’t going for him, but I am not going to worry about it.

  3. Good, I’m glad we didn’t get him. He’s not really the kind of player I see fitting in with the team. We need younger players that can stay and grow with us.

  4. Panarin signed a $11M x 2 year contract with LA https://puckpedia.com/player/artemi-panarin

This means the Kraken offered him about $1M more per year and for 1-2 more years than LA and panarin said “no thanks” to Seattle.

AND Washington has the state income tax advantage over California so the actual take home pay difference would be more than $1M.

Dude just didn’t want to come to Seattle and was willing to leave millions, maybe tens of millions, on the table to not play here.

  5. Very glad he didn’t want to come. Reckon we dodged a bullet there – only problem is that management are the ones firing the gun.

What the fuck were they thinking?

  6. Time to huff the “Auston Matthews is willing to leave Toronto for the right price” copium now.

  7. Don’t think panarin fixes Seattle’s issues but my god does the team need to find a way to sign proven scorers. Getting him would have encouraged others later.

  8. Panarin would have helped this team, he would have instantly become the best player on our team (at least for this season). I don’t think him alone would have moved the needle enough to turn us into a true cup contender, as honestly I don’t think there’s 1 player that would right now (I guess other than McDavid or MacKinnon maybe). I’m glad this move didn’t come to fruition, but it does make me slightly worried that we’re in the market to sacrifice future pieces to make the team better now

  9. Play-wise he might’ve helped us, especially this year, but if a guy needs to be coaxed and persuaded to go to us, I’d be worried that in any amount of adversity he’d turn locker room poison. So I’m content to have missed him. Would love it if we could pull something off this season, but not this.

  10. This a huge W for Seattle because that contract is gunna be dog water.

They still need a star though.

  11. I mean, it’s great he didn’t take the offer. But the fact we even attempted to offer this much is very alarming. I have zero faith in this FO.

  12. So apparently this is true, and it makes me very disappointed in the front office. The team has always been built around inclusivity and the well-being of not only the players but the fans.

Sure, we may have dodged a bullet, but the fact that it’s reported that management aggressively pushed for him really tells me that they were doing it out of desperation and not out of any consideration for the future of the team.

I support the team in spite of the fact that they are not the strongest team in the league and that they don’t have any star players, but Panarin, really? Feel somewhat conflicted about this ngl.
