Well shit.
Stupid fucking Habs.
Do the Blue Jackets dump streamers and confetti all over their arena for every regular season win? Seems a bit dramatic… I thought maybe it was some throwback clip to *something* they’d accomplished but no it was just their last win. I guess after 25 years of nothing you give those fans whatever you can.
Player stock in the last 5 games
Up:
Aljo, Seider*
Down:
Everyone else
All we need is a top 6 Forward, a top 4 D-man, a few depth scorers and a few rules changes and we’re winning Stanley Cup
So interesting fact:
Over the last 10 games, our xG% (both all situations and 5v5) is better than Montreal, Buffalo, and Boston’s. Usually significantly so, although Boston isn’t much worse 5v5.
Could we generate more chances? Yes. Could we be better 5v5? Yes. But it’s not the core of the issue recently. The core of the issue has been finishing (-7 goals above expected over the past 10 games). People say this offense is ghosting, but last night Cat hit the post, Larkin scored, and Vejmelka made 2 or 3 ten bell saves, not even counting the breakaways/partial breakaways he shut down solidly. On another night, we could have easily potted 4+ on the exact same chances created.
The worry about our team is amplified by the fact that seemingly nobody else can stop winning. They’re playing worse than we are though. People are talking out of both sides of their mouth about this. “Our play is unsustainable and everybody else is winning at will”. We have the most sustainable play of any of the 4 teams jockeying for those positions. In fact, we’re due for positive regression.
Boston has 12 goals above expected in their last 10 (1st in the league). Buffalo is second with 11. Montreal is 8th with 5. Their goalies are also all very hot too. Buffalo in particular is on a PDO bender, with an expected goal differential of -9 and an actual goal differential of 12.
All this to say: take a deep breath and try and relax. There is a lot of hockey left. It feels like we’re playing terribly, but in reality, we just aren’t finishing our chances well and have been hit with some stellar goalie performances. Meanwhile, our rivals are playing worse (often considerably worse) than we are and somehow not getting punished for it. That can’t continue all of March, especially as teams have ridiculously condensed schedules coming out of the break.
I heard Dylan is paying to take an extra bag to Milan so he can hide Werenski in it and bring him back with him.
Don’t let the Olympics slow down all this trade speculation.
Hypothetically if countries could trade players what are your crazy proposals?
Canada needs a goalie and the US has tons. Do you trade depth like Wolf or one of your 3 that probably won’t see the ice anyway? What do you ask for in return? Note: as a Canadian I refuse to accept JT Miller as a throw in.
Yes this is a dumb topic, but its a hockey discussion thread, have some fun. I think the Athletic did this last year before 4 Nations if you want some ideas
McKenna update: didn’t happen at the bar, happened in front of a parking garage up the street, after McKenna allegedly was asked to leave the bar. Town cameras caught him punching the guy twice.
Man, I just watched that elbow to McAvoy. Someone is just going to beat the shit out of a panther someday and I’m not sure I’ll think that’s a bad thing. The NHL is really playing with fire to specifically protect one team here.
I wonder what the goal support has been for Gibson since Christmas. The guys haven’t rewarded his turnaround hardly at all since.
On the lighter side of life, I learned today that my phone auto corrects Artemi Panarin to Tammy Panera. That made me chuckle.
Impatiently waiting for USA Hockey to announce the men’s leadership group to see if Larkin gets an A.
Optimistically hoping it could be tomorrow once the NHL stops, but might have to wait until early next week once the team is actually together.
Who else is excited for best on best hockey? I am absolutely stoked.
If you could do *one* thing for your senior dog to make them feel good every day what would it be?
My old girl has had a heck of a 2025. Bone cancer survivor 😤 and a little lighter because of it. Recovered like a champ, and I just want to do everything I can for her.
Are we going to get a pic from Milan of Larkin on a couch in his USA jersey, draped in an American flag?
My wife just got the great news that she is done with chemotherapy! Looks like it did its job. Next up is recuperation, then surgery, then recovery from that. Really grateful to get such a great prognosis. Now to plan the perfect vacation.
Not sure if I’m the only one who saw it this way but I didn’t think we played that bad last night against Mammoth. The first period was bad and Gibby made some huge saves to keep us in it. After that they got their legs going and generated many chances and just got goalie’d. Compared to Avs game where we got the lead early and sat on it, although playing very sound defensively. I don’t dismiss the fact the offense 5v5 has dried up and the PP has been ass though.
I think the team getting rest should do them good, and getting a mini training camp coming back to work out those issues will be huge. I know we all have PTSD from the past couple years in March, but the saving grace to me is Todd McLellan and John Gibson. LGRW!
Completely random players to watch from the Saginaw Spirit. The team is rebuilding after their Memorial cup run so they are pretty rough but young this year. They have quite a few draft eligible or next year draft eligible that the Wings may actually be interested in. I’m not a scout, just a season ticket owner who likes to overanalyze and invest my time into drafting and researching prospects. I did “accidentally” grab a Wings scout draft notes he had thrown away after a terrible game.
Our first line, the “Russian” line
Egor Barabanov, LW –
2006 born, feisty, playmaker and forechecker but expected 2nd rounder
Nikita Klepov, RW
Goalscorer, mid to late first round pick, would be very happy if the Wings grabbed him. He’s a dual citizen, was an import.
Dima Zhilkin, C
2027 draft, 1st rounder, thought only offense but really showcasing his decent defensive ability. I really want the Wings to find a way to draft him next year.
Other notables:
Stepan Shurygin, G
A little feisty, big, typical Russian goalie. Pretty technical sound but needs to work on his positioning as he sometimes gets way out of the crease. Given, the Spirit are a pure offense style team and give up a lot of odd man rushes.
Carson Harmer, C
I think he missed his first draft eligible year, solid 2 way forward. Defensively sound, sneaky offense, probably bottom 6 if he fills out some more. I think he would be a good 5th rounder or later and want the Wings to grab him. Soft spot for him so a bit bias.
Brody Pepoy, LW/RW
Free agent signing, really surprised at him. He can be hot and cold, doesn’t always show up on the score sheet but he definitely helps drive his line. He’s physical most days but needs to put on some muscle. I see him as a 2 way forward/grinder esque. I’m forcing his nickname to be Popeye because when he turns it on he can boss people around and out muscle them to get the puck.
Rookies to watch:
Levi Harper, D
He just broke Zayne Parekh’s rookie point record. Trending to be a top 15 pick for 27/28.
Gensen Geldert, C
Good at faceoffs, physical, scoring touch has come out of nowhere. Solid 2 way player. Trending to probably be a mid to late round pick but honestly could see him continuing to grow and raising his stock.
Ryan Hanrahan, F
Smooth skater, good passer, trending well in his first year. Could see him taking a big jump next year. Haven’t paid much attention because he’s going to be the star of the team going forward. He’s just good, probably should pay attention to him more to give better answers on him.
Drew Roscoe, D
Hasn’t played much, was injured the first half of the year. He’s already 6’6 tall but as expected, needs to put on muscle. Not super physical yet but shows a bit. For his size his draft profile is a smooth skating, 2 way defender with a scoring touch. Haven’t been able to see him shoot much yet but I’m hoping he has a cannon of a shot. Should be a full timer next year, one big name to watch just with his unique skill set. Could be a 1st rounder, could be a 4th rounder.
Hoping after the break everyone is well rested, and the wings finally get the 10 game win streak that other teams were getting.
Hilary Knight is *the* quintessential USA hockey captain. Nobody else compares. Just had a nasty goal for their 4th of the day.
Too bad we didn’t land Bread.
We could have had the picnic line. Ham, Apples, Bread and cider. With a little cheese, we could have had a decent meal.
I better see zero OTs tonight!
Some hot takes I suppose: if we get Thomas we have the best forward group in the East, the team should be looking to add depth scoring as much as depth defence, Cam Talbot should be shopped as Gibby is clearly the starter and Cossa deserves reps, Moritz Seider needs to hit 65 points if he wants any real Norris consideration
Also can we pls get MBN back. Last night we needed a big body forward to get back at Utah and we have nobody
I don’t pretend to know all there is to know about the game of hockey. I see a lot of takes and info in here that make me realize that even after 25-30ish years of watching the game, I’m still learning about one thing or another. But one thing I do know is that I saved a lot of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico.
It’s going to be a long Olympic break, lol.
I’ve decided that I’m going to entertain myself during the Olympics by writing limericks everyday. I’m watching a let’s play of Resident Evil and was inspired to write one about Jill.
There once was a lady named Jill
Who was said to have looks that could kill
She said don’t you dare nut
Or I’ll kick your butt
Then I’ll be the one with the thrill

Future captain of the Detroit Vipers PWHL team 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
writing a letter to the NHL that i’m boycotting until the 5v5 scoring improves
Looking through the team store right now hoping for some birthday ideas. Are they for real with all the sweatshirts being $89+? Seems ridiculous
I thought we’d get two points on that mini-road trip. I just never thought it would turn out the way it did.
if you wanna see a picture of hell on earth:

Thoughts from seeing the game in-person last night. It was definitely a lot closer than the score suggested; honestly that “deserve-to-win meter” looks accurate for this one. Really slow 1st from the Wings; everyone looks lethargic. Kane, although a little slow, looked noticeably lethal. Kasper looked good but still unlucky. Raymond and Larkin went over to Hamonic in the box to give him props, not sure if that was shown on the broadcast, but the culture at least looks good there. Goalies are so mental and Veggie was absolutely dialed in (lost his uncle recently too and locking in for the Olympics too). The slow start let him get hot for sure.
Ok into the break we go.
Pretty great position. Granted Eastern Conference is unreal lately.
Will be a fight to the finish.
Here’s hoping Stevie does the right thing and helps us get over the top and into the playoffs.
The real core needs to see what that type of environment is all about finally.
Can’t only worry about the future and constantly overlook the present.
Go Wings.
Get us Faulk and Thomas please.
