  1. I swear, every time he gives up a HR I’m gonna think of Urkel sheepishly asking “did I do that?”

  2. Is the plan here to use him as a long reliever/6-7th starter? Not only is he a RHP when we still need a lefty, he’s been injured for so long that it doesnt make any sense to rely on him as a full time starter.

I’d definitely take him over Yohan Ramirez if thats the plan, though.

  3. Sure why not? If his arm is finally healthy, $1.5M for a decent innings eater is great value.

  4. He was good prior to his injury. If he returns to form its good depth. Low risk move. People shouldn’t shit on it right away. Atleast we know Ben is awake!!

  5. I am never opposed to adding more pitching, but him being a right hander (albeit with reverse splits) instead of a lefty is a bit of a head-scratcher for me. Urquidy hasn’t thrown much at all recently due to injury. So I doubt they will give him anything over 100 innings this season.

Long relief depth in Indy? Swingman to piggy back off of Mlod in the number five spot?

I doubt this is the only FA pitcher they sign.

  6. I kind of like this signing assuming he’s fully recovered from his injuries. He’s only 31 and isn’t the usual vet type of pitcher we target this late in the offseason.

I’d rather they take a chance like this instead of wasting money on a minor league deal with someone like Martin Perez again.

  7. I’m all for having pitching depth, but I’m starting to wonder if they are going to run some form of a 6 man rotation. I’d assume you’d run Skenes and Keller on 5 days rest, then figure out a way to give the other guys an extra day or skip a start since they will be young or coming off injuries.

  8. This is fine. It adds pitching depth to replace what we traded away and if he can get back to his pre injury form then it’s a steal at this price

  9. Nothingburger. Our new pitching coach was his coach in Houston, and figured he was worth a flyer.

I suspect his arm may be beyond repair, but maybe he recovers. Who knows.

  10. The good: for his career, he is a totally reasonable #4 SP with a 4.00 ERA

The mid: that career only spans 407 innings

The bad: only 65 of those innings have come in the last two years and they were bad innings.
