BHM: Larry Doby, the first Black player in the American League in 1947 and the second Black manager in the American League in 1978, was posthumously awarded a Congressional Gold Medal in 2018.

  1. Obviously Jackie was first and deserves all the recognition he gets, so I dont want to take anything away from him-

    But the league has done a really poor job highlighting Doby’s contributions and his name should be more well known.

  2. Larry Doby was on Cleveland’s coaching staff when I saw my first game. I remember my dad pointing him out and explaining how he was a historical first and had been a star player for the Tribe. Doby only coached one year in Cleveland (1974), as the whole staff was rolled over before the 75 season. If I ever knew that he’d gone on to be a manager in Chicago, I’d long since forgotten that fact.

  3. MLB needs to get over themselves and create Larry Doby day on the day of his MLB debut to rightfully honor him like they do for Jackie Robinson

  4. My foray into vintage cards has taught me a lot about Doby. He’s my main vintage PC. The respect I have for him is immense. What a player and person.
