Alex DeBrincat is carrying the Detroit Red Wings offense | Midseason evaluations pt. 3
Alex DeBrincat had 30 goals before the Olympic break, and is pacing to be Detroit’s first 40 goal scorer since Marian Hossa in 2009. Meanwhile his best friend Patrick Kane’s play has seen a step back in on-ice impacts, but his production has been keeping pace. Also, we do a brief preview of the Men’s Olympic hockey tournament. #LGRW

DeBrincat: (correction, Above and Beyond) Above, flirting with A&B. He's been awesome. Aside from starting the season without a goal for the first 8 games, he's been our best offensive player. Plus, he's been super clutch. Ya know what, he's earned A&B.
Chiarot: Above. He's been pretty good this year, especially at the beginning of the year. He's a low-mid tier 2LD, but I think he'd be a high level 3LD if we can upgrade 2LD. I've been pleasantly surprised by his play. He's been solid, though not spectacular. Put it this way, I was happy when he re-signed with the Wings, and going into this year, I was looking forward to his contact coming off the books.
Kane: Meeting. He's providing exactly what I expected. He's elite on the PP, and barely noticeable at even strength. He's been injured too, so that kinda lowers the expectations.
Soderblom: Meeting, maybe a little below? Soderblom is weird for me. I've really liked his play, but he's not showing up on the score sheet at all. I love his puck protection, and his ability to strip the puck from the opponents. I'm going with meeting because his play feels better than I expected, but his offense is well below expectations. (Lol I wrote this before they talked about Soderblom, but they are addressing the exact thing I'm saying. Glad to know I'm not seeing the games differently than everyone else. 😅)
Appleton: Meeting. I didn't know what to expect from him, but from what I read about him in the preseason, he felt like an upgraded Christian Fischer. He's basically that.
Hamonic: Failing. I expected a slightly improved Justin Holl. I got Temu Justin Holl. He's been awful. The bar was on ground, and he dug a tunnel under it. Truly terrible. I long for the days of Jeff Petry when Hamonic is on the ice.
ASP: Above and Beyond. Hear me out. He was not expected to be in the NHL this season. He's playing on the second pair in his rookie year as an undersized defensemen. He's getting limited minutes, but he's already our second best RD. He's had some rookie mistakes, and just getting out muscled at times, but that's part of the learning process. I have no problem with the mistakes he's making. It feels like he's learning each game. If I gave him a letter grade, it would probably only be a C-, but he's well above and beyond what I expected.
For the Olympics, I just hope all 3 Wings medal.
