Great opportunity to look back at the Darnold trade thread. It definitely still feels like the fan base was 50/50 on trading him.

  1. I think most people felt it was inevitable and necessary, rather than being for or against the trade. Even if he stayed, I doubt he becomes the QB he is today with the Jets. It was best for both parties. And even people who opposed the trade at the time probably didn’t predict what would happen.

It’s also not his fault we ended up with Zach Wilson.

  2. I disagree that it was necessary. Darnold had talent and threw a decent TD-INT ratio with Adam Gase and no WRs.

Joe Douglas did some good, and some bad – the worst thing he did was make it a business decision to get rid of Darnold. Fans wanted Jamar Chase, Justin Jefferson, Miach Parson,s or Penai Sewell.

If we just got the tackle on the receiver and ended up getting A-Rod, I do think Sam would have been better with the defense.

But personally, I’m tired of these what-ifs – we have an owner who bases his team off of Madden ratings and is a literal SAer.

Why can’t the NFL make him sell?

  3. Looks like a lot of people were totally right. A lot of people shitting on Gase which is heartwarming to see. I think I had mixed feelings about it, I thought that he might need a change of scenery and his 5th year option was a tough decision. I think the whole situation would have been much clearer if the Jets had the first overall pick or there were two excellent quarterback prospects.

Sewell has been everything he was hyped up to be. He’s only 25, but I think it’s fair to say he’s on track to be a hall of famer. Obviously anything can happen but he’s been flat out excellent. Would have been much better than Wilson, that’s for sure.

My wife got really into football this year and we have been talking about how prospects are given a projected floor and ceiling. She said the Jets should pick players with high floors since most of the time that’s what the Jets are ending up with. Harsh but not exactly wrong in the past decade or so. Wilson had a very low floor and that’s pretty much what we got.

  4. All the misplaced JD love. Everyone of my jets friends were so excited for him when we hired him. He had connections to Baltimore and Philly. We thought he would turn the ship around. What a huge disappointment. 0 winning seasons and one of the all-time worse records for any gm in nfl history. That’s why I’m withholding any praise for Mougey. This is year two to get a qb and start winning. His first attempt? Just as bad as JD.

  5. Hindsight is 20/20 but it’s not like Sam Darnold became a Super Bowl winning QB right after he left the Jets. His years with the Panthers and 49ers proved that he was still a work in progress. I think him going to the 9ers really helped him stabilize mentally and allowed him to take a backseat to everything while learning from that amazing coaching staff. Reuniting with Josh McCown in Minnesota was a good stepping stone back into the starting role and obviously this year he took the big leap.

Big props to him but as much as we wanted to continue building around him I don’t think he would’ve been successful here.

  6. I don’t fully understand cap and contracts, especially with draft picks early but my argument was and always will be he was so young!

The correct move the jets can’t seem to fathom is letting these kids sit for 3 to 4 years. We suck and lose when we put them in anyway.

Im sure woody is a big part of this issue but regardless its got to happen at some point if we want to succeed. Good for sam. Wish it was us.

  7. I am happy for Sam but I think we need to move on because I can’t do this every day lol

  8. In hindsight yes we should have kept Darnold and got the kings ransom that the 49ers gave to the dolphins for pick 3 (3 firsts and a 3rd).

  9. I still feel like in the moment it was closer to 70/30 Trade.

Which I stand by was the correct decision. Look at the 2021 Week 1 depth chart – Tevin Coleman, Rookie Elijah Moore, Ryan Griffin, Corey Davis. That’s a bottom 3 skill position group. Starting OL of Becton (immediately got hurt/GVR/McGovern/AVT/Fant isn’t awful, but it’s pretty mediocre. This was a bad football team that was way more than a Sewell/Chase away.

And mentally, Sam was cooked. He was always respectful, which the fans still love him for, but you could see it on his face that his confidence was shot. If he continued his poor play into Year 4, it would have gotten toxic very quickly. Wouldn’t have been a good situation for Sam or a first year HC.

I can’t get on board with the Same Old Jets trade hindsight. It took Sam years and multiple stops to turn his career around, it’s not like we’re the Vikings who had to watch him win a SB the following year.

  10. How about when Teflon Joe Douglas told Sam’s parents he was gonna build around Sam. Then dumped him ASAP. For a QB who was not even a team captain

  11. I think we also need to admit it, Darnold clearly is not an elite QB. He’s gotten much better, and is clearly a starter, but we all saw the Seahawks kick 5 field goals in the super bowl and an RB win MVP for the first time since 1998.

  12. I was in favor of moving on from Sam. I still think he’s an average QB, but I was also wrong. They should’ve kept him. Huge “what if” to think about how things turn out if they keep Sam , trade the number 2 pick, and also keep Lafleur.

  13. Happy for him, really sad we traded him instead of building around him. I only wanted TLaw over Sam…once they blew that chance I was screaming for them to make a trade back (look what SF gave up for Trey Lance at pick 3!!!!) and build around Sam. 😭😭😭

  14. So the past two months haven’t been enough opportunity to keep having this same tired discussion? Teams make decisions, sometimes they don’t work out. Its like you folks never seen a QB develop after a team trades them away…

  15. I’m not saying he would have taken us to a Super Bowl, but if there was a timeline where Darnold played his whole career as a Jet you just know he retires with all the team passing records.

  16. Ultimately, the organization is the reason why Sam didn’t work out here. Time and time again, we see players leave this dumspter fire and thrive elsewhere. It’s nearly impossible for this team to take steps forward when you have a buffoon and arguably the worst owner in the NFL meddling in football decisions. This team has no hope as long as Woody is here.
