This is a wild ass idea… then you’ll have playoff teams tanking to get in the draft tournament
It should be the coaches that play
I thought this would never fly outside of 2K but I’d be open to this. The only question is what do people do with protected picks.
We have to change pick protections for this to work.
So all the end of lottery teams get good picks while the worst teams get punished???
Teams that don’t make the playoffs should just have equal chances for it. Then the only real tanking would happen in the play in.
I don’t see players getting excited about winning, so teams can draft their replacement lol. But maybe teams will be incentivized to put winning lineups on the floor. I always wished they’d do tournaments for advantages in the playoffs, like better seeding, but idk
This wouldn’t be enacted until at the earliest this offseason, so doesn’t affect our pick this year.
Still a really cool idea. Like another NBA Cup at the back half of the season that only lottery teams participate in.
convert the regular season games that those teams match up in, into “Lottery Cup” qualifier games, and the winner and runner up compete in a Finals match, and get the Number 1 and 2 picks, respectably.
All other lottery picks are still decided through the regular process.
This sound dumb
I feel like this was discussed first in r/Mavericks and NBA picked it up
Terrible idea. They’d be better off just removing the lottery all together and dropping the top 3-5 teams to the bottom of the teams that missed the playoffs if they are in that position multiple times in a row or too many times in a window.
I mean this does kill tanking, but it also gives 0 chance for legitimately bad teams lol.
Every team has 10 in-season games that contribute to your draft position. Twist is nobody knows which games they were until after the season. Non-playoff team with the best record in those 10 games gets the #1 pick.
We do this in our Fantasy Football league with the losers bracket to incentivize people to keep setting lineups and making roster moves once its clear they won’t make the playoffs it’s become just as popular as playing for the actual trophy/prize not sure it translates to real life but it eliminated our late season zombie team issue
I think a better option would be to flatten the odds even more and extend it to the bottom 18 teams (play-in and lower). worst 5 records get 10% odds at the #1 pick with the 15% being spread between 6-18. this way having the worst record and 5th worst records gives you the same odds at 10%
this way it curbs tanking since the there is not much of a difference between worst record and 7th worse record but also gives an opportunity for teams stuck in the middling area where they are too good to get a high pick but bad enough to not really be able to compete. As well as extending the lottery for the top 5 picks because if for whatever reason you do tank you can still slide 5 spots.
SELL THE TEAM
This may be crazy but the playin tournament should be expanded to all teams without an automatic playoff bid and each win increases lottery odds.
It would still have to be weighted based on record as a baseline like it is currently because you run the risk of teams actually tanking to get into the tournament. But maybe the tournament counts for like 50% of lottery odds and you could gain X percent for each win.
It obviously won’t be for this season ya dummy
If you really suck though how would you win the tournament? What would they call this, the Suck Bowl?
such a dumb idea lol
There has to be something tied to money and you make all lottery teams have the same % for picks. All the lottery teams have to pay money but the worst team has to pay X more dollars and then it lessens all the way up. Something like that. I’m sure someone smarter than me gets what I’m going for. Money has to be lost by being bad, it’s the only real deterrent
So if teams are good enough for the playoffs but not championship contenders couldn’t they do what the jazz are doing now to get the 1st pick potentially and
So you’re gonna try to motivate players to win their replacements?
they need to have some weighted tier where it impacts players compensation. that’s the only real way to enforce it.
if tanking adversely affects a players compensation – a coach & FO wouldn’t be able to get away with all this fuckery.
haven’t really thought it through at all – but yah those are the ppl who will feel the pain the most & drive the most impact & change
This sounds stupid. Tanking will still happen just so they can have an opportunity to enter that tournament. What difference does it make?
Hell u might even have the fringe play in teams by mid season decide ‘Hey. Let’s try to get in there instead.’.
Just simply reduce the % to those team who were tanking, deduct 1% per game simple as that
Somebody had the idea that you could stop tanking if you let the winner of each game decide if it counts as a win or a loss. I thought that would be a funny idea.
Or just relegate the bottom 2-3 teams every single year to fully avoid tanking
I don’t get the logic behind the tournament. Who gets no.1 then. Loser of the tournament? Then just tank the tournament. Winner of the tournament? Then just play the worst players and save the best for the end tournament. Whatever this tournament would solve, it would not be tanking.

6th. 9.5%
7th. 9%

12th 2%
