[Caswell] Craig Stammen says he feels “really good” about Luis Campusano serving as the Padres’ No. 2 catcher. He pointed to the erratic way Campusano was used last year and emphasized the importance of giving Fermin more rest throughout the season to keep him fresh.

  1. I think I’ve heard this for 5 years now. He has had plenty of chances. He is just a AAA all star

  2. This is what really irked me about Shildt last year. We kept trotting out Diaz every 4 days while Fermin was getting pushed way too hard. He let Campy rot in El Paso while he was doing more than enough to prove he deserved a spot over a guy on the wrong side of 30

  3. I’m not optimistic but I also think Craig is talking the only actually useful attitude to the problem.

  4. I’m willing to forget everything we’ve seen about Campy until now. I’m hoping with a solid chance, which may be his last, he grabs hold of it. Fermin is a good example for him to look up to. Go get it Campy. No matter what he’s done in the past, his HR swing is still one of my favorites.

  5. Maybe having a manager that doesn’t actively hate him will give him some confidence too

  6. I’m going to say it again……Campy lacks the mental fortitude to play in the bigs. He has proven it time and time again he cannot hang. I hope he proves me/us wrong, but that has been the case every time he gets the call. He just does not have the mental. Period.

  7. This is probably a unpopular opinion, but I care much more about Campy’s defense than his bat. If he can give us league-average defense behind the plate, it’s totally fine if he hits poorly like he did in ’24. I don’t expect much offensively from a backup C, but the defense needs to be there so we’re not subbing in Fermin halfway through each Campy start.

  8. Everyone in here blaming Schildt or the front office for Campy languishing the past few years but you’re forgetting the real reason that has been stated subtly by media: The pitchers don’t like working with him. At all.

  9. Agree he was used erratically- I was never a
Campy fan, but I can see where he has potential so hopefully he shines this year. Plus, yeah Fermin definitely needs some rest. I don’t want anything happening to him
